The evening sun was hugging the horizon when Inu Yasha finally returned to his home. Kaede, Suzume, and the village men had long since returned to the village, and Shippou waited alone by the cooking fire for the hanyou. The kitsune noticed he was wearing his now spotless fire rat robes, and carrying his other articles of clothing. They made eye contact, and the hanyou nodded in greeting to him before he started walking in the direction of his room.. Shippou scrunched up his face in worry as he observed the older man, noting the slump of his shoulders and his dull gaze. His eyes, normally so clear and vibrant were glassy and bloodshot, most likely from prolonged crying. 'Better to tell him now than let him find out the hard way.' Shippou told himself.

"She's not here. Okasan had me take her to the dry well about an hour after your fight." Shippou watched as the hanyou froze in his tracks and slowly turned to face him. Inu Yasha looked shocked and slightly panicked, his nose twitching as he sniffed the air to confirm Shippou's statement.
IS gone.. is she ok? She's not sick, is she?" The tone of Inu Yasha's voice matched his panicked face. There were only two reasons for her to go home this suddenly; if she was angry or if there was something physically wrong with her or the baby. He dropped his things and turned, heading in the direction of the well that joined their times. Before he could leave, Shippou dashed in front of him and blocked the doorway
She's fine! She's just really rea~lly pissed off right now. She said she needed a few days to think and calm down." Shippou hoped that the hanyou would heed her warning and leave her be. Kagome was beyond furious, and if Inu Yasha went to her now the stress of the confrontation that would follow might harm her or the life inside of her. Inu Yasha pushed him to the side and stormed past, completely undeterred by the kit's warning. He drew the Tetsaiga from its sheath, and firmly planted the blade in the wood of the home's only portal inside. The untransformed fang would protect his home it's occupants until he returned. Shippou tried to follow, put was pushed back inside by a pulse of energy from the sword. "Inu Yasha! Just leave her be! She promised me she would come back!" he yelled to the rapidly disappearing figure in red. His youkai hearing barely made out Inu Yasha's pained response as he vanished into the foliage:

"If I don't go now, I'm afraid I'll loose her."

raced through the forest, the muscles in his legs practically screaming at him from the abuse. He was moving much faster than his body was accustomed; faster than he even supposed his body should move. Inu Yasha winced as he felt a tendon in his knee give, knowing that it wasn't going to get a chance to heal until morning. Tonight was the new moon, and in a few short minutes the sun would set and leave him without his demon powers. The others would be safe, protected by his sword and the permanent wards Kagome had set over every wall, window, floor and ceiling in the house. 'I have to get to her.... I have to talk to her and make things right.' he told himself. That thought was repeated again and again, chanted like a mantra by his mind, heart and soul. When he reached the well, he felt as if an eternity had passed, even though it had only been a few short minutes.
balanced himself for a few seconds on the lip of the well, struggling to catch his breath. He closed his eyes and pushed off, falling into the depths of the bone eater's well just as the sun slipped completely below the horizon. He felt the snap and pull of energy, and when he opened his eyes, he found himself fully human and standing in the bottom of the well. He leaned his head back, looking for the familiar sight of the aged timbers of the well house roof. What met his astonished eyes however, was a field of stars. He was still in Sengoku Jidai. The energy he felt had been his transformation. The well did not work. He closed his eyes and howled his grief loudly into the night.
started at the sound of an anguished howl coming from the direction of the well. She dropped the armor she was repairing and ran out to the common room, where Shippou stood watch by the door. "What was that howl?" she asked, concerned that there might be youkai nearby. She spied the untransformed Tetsaiga pushed into the wood of the door frame. When she noticed a distinct lack of the presence of its owner, she grew even more troubled. "Where is Inu Yasha?"

"He went to the well. Kagome went home... and from the sound of it, I'd say she sealed the well in back of her."couldn't help but feel sorry for Inu Yasha.. not being able to reach her had to be tearing him apart. He loved Kagome more than life itself, and was probably feeling very rejected at the moment. He felt Sango brush past him, and run towards the direction of the dry well as fast as she could in her restrictive kimono. "Hey!" the kit called out to the ningen. "Take out this sword so I can come too!" He watched helpless as the taijia disappeared into the forest as Inu Yasha had only minutes earlier. Shippou grabbed a broom, and poked at the sword with the handle. A bolt of energy leapt from the blade along the wood and struck his arm, scorching the skin slightly. "Well, shit."Sango reached the well she carefully peered over the edge. She gasped at what she saw, horrified for her friend. Inu Yasha knelt on the soil floor of the well, digging at the soil with his ineffective human hands. Though she could not see his face, she could tell by his ragged breathing and the way his body was trembling he was crying. 'Kagome no baka! I know you are mad, but that's no reason to leave him like this!' she thought vehemently. She carefully sat on the wells' lip next to the small bamboo ladder that lead to the bottom. Making up her mind that she could not leave him here like this, she slowly climbed down into the depths.
heard the soft 'tap' of footfalls behind him and froze. He prayed for a desperate moment that it was Kagome standing behind him, and that she was not gone forever as he feared. He slowly turned on his knees, and his gaze met with a familiar pink and green kimono. 'Sango...' A few tears slid freely down his cheeks as he was no longer to keep up his facade, and his dark amethyst eyes slid to hers.

"It won't work.... it won't let me get to her." His whole being felt numb and hazy, as if he were trapped in a horrible dream. "I tried to go through.. I tried so many times, but it won't let me through..." His voice was a hushed whisper, and he dropped his gaze to his battered and bleeding hands. "What if she can't ever come back? What if I can never see her again?" Sango took his hands in her own, squeezing them gently as he had done to her so many times over the past couple of days.

"She will be back, I'm certain of it. She must have needed some time alone to think and calm down... I know the well will work just fine when she wishes to return." she tried to reassure him. He looked so lost in that moment, and Sango prayed that the well situation really was temporary. She didn't want to think of how he would behave if Kagome never returned. She stood, still holding his hands and tugging them gently. "Come on.. it's not safe out here.. we'll come back in the morning. Kagome would never forgive me if she came back and something happed to you."
stared up at her balefully, unhappy that she would try and remove him from the well. He wanted to keep trying, to wait until Kagome was with him, in whatever time the kamis deemed fit. He could not, however, stay outside the safety of his home with the taijia. Sesshomaru was still out there, as were other dangers, and he could not in good conscience either send her back by herself or let her stay in the open with him. He rose carefully, gingerly testing his weight on the injured knee. He ascended the ladder and exited, turning to aid Sango out of the well. They began to slowly make their way back to the house, both alert and wary of their surroundings. Thankfully the forest around them was still and calm, and they returned safely.
saw the two approach, and reminded himself to thank Sango later for dragging Inu Yasha back. He didn't like the way the man was favoring one leg, or the smell of his blood in the air. He darted back into the recovery room, grabbing boxes of bandages and supplies to clean wounds. By the time he returned to the common room, Inu Yasha was just sitting down by the fire, a concerned Sango by his side. Sango noticed the stack of medical supplies in the kits arms, and smiled warmly at him "Ah, Shippou-chan, arigato." Inu Yasha turned to the kit and glared when he saw the medical supplies.
don't need any damn treatment. I'm fine." he insisted. He crossed his arms, effectively hiding his dirty and bleeding hands in his robes. He closed his eyes and rolled his shoulders back, taking his usual "don't fucking bother me" stance, and Shippou took a few hesitant steps towards them. He put the supplies down next to the taijia, and motioned his head towards the sullen black haired man. Sango winked, and silently mouthed 'I'll take care of him.' to the kit. Shippou grinned, relieved that he didn't have to risk Inu Yasha's wrath. Right now, Sango was more than capable of pinning the grumpy hanyou-turned-human to the ground and treating his wounds if necessary.
if you guys don't need me, I'm going to bed." Shippou stretched and yawned loudly before heading back to his room for some shut-eye. The taijia waited a few minutes before trying to get the mans attention. She hoped that Inu Yasha would be less inclined to drop the tough-guy act if Shippou was gone, especially after he had been so emotive in front of her at the well. When he showed no signs of opening up, she gently lay her hand on one of his arms. He turned his face to face her and opened his eyes. The haunted depths seemed to plead with her not to talk about Kagome or the well, and Sango got the impression he was only barely holding himself together. She gathered the supplies under one of her arms, and tugged one of his hands free of his robe with the other. She stood, and tried to pull him by the wrist with her.
need to treat your hands, whether you think you need it or not. I don't want to do it out here where Shippou can wander out and watch. Or do you want him seeing you like this?" she asked, giving him a meaningful look. He paused for a moment, considering her implication. He knew Sango well enough to know she was referring to his emotional state, which wasn't very stable at the moment. His fragile mask was likely to crumble at any moment, and he defiantly did not want the kit to see him like that. He shook his head in the negative and stood, and by force of habit started to walk for his own room. He froze when he realized where he was heading, uncertain if he could stand to spend the night in his bedroom, surrounded by all the little reminders of his wife. Seemingly reading his mind, Sango tugged on his sleeve to get his attention. "Come on... why don't we go to my room? We can talk if you want, or I'll stand guard while you get some rest. I was up working on repairing my armor anyways." He nodded and allowed her to lead him down the hall to her room.
