Chapter 21
Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha.
-Tear- My brother leaves today, so the authoress is sad…Not that that was important or anything though…-Cough- Umm…On with the story!!!
A woman groggily slammed her hand on her alarm clock to stop the ringing. She groaned in annoyance when she realized the ringing didn’t stop. “Oh!” She quickly picked up the phone, now fully awake, and yawned before greeting whoever was on the other line.
“Oh my god!! Katsu!” She shook her husbands shoulder impatiently as she listened to the person on the other line. “Oh thank you! Thank God she’s all right!” Tears fell down her cheeks at the joy that was filling her. “Yes. Thank you! Thank you! Okay, goodbye.” She hung up the phone and laughed happily wiping her tears away.
“What is it honey?” The confused man looked at his wife as if she had gone crazy.
She laughed and waved him away. “Oh, stop looking at me like that! Kagome woke up!” His eyes widened in surprise before he leaned over and hugged his wife. “I know! We are going to go after school so Shippou can go too. Now you better get ready for work, we’re going to need money to pay for the hospital bill!” She gently scolded her husband into getting up.
“Oh my god! Kagome!” Said girl was suddenly brought into a tight embrace.
“Heh-heh…Nice to see you too Emi.” She managed to mumble out, patting the woman’s back.
“I’m just so glad you’re okay!!” She sobbed happily. The girl laughed nervously and looked around for the others. They came into the room shortly after inquiring how Emi had managed to walk so fast.
“Hello, Kagome.” Her best friend walked over, gently pushed the woman aside, and hugged her.
“Hi Sango! You have no idea how unbelievingly bored I was until you all came!” She beamed with happiness.
“So I take it your better?” Inuyasha asked wheeling Miroku in. She nodded and smiled to her other best friends. The small kitsune, no longer able to contain his excitement, jumped up on the bed and hugged the girl fiercely.
“Kagome! I missed you!” Shippou smiled up at his ‘sister’. Her heart leapt out to the young boy. She patted his head soothingly.
“Well I’m here now aren’t I?” He nodded and snuggled up to her.
“Nee-chan.” She shot her head towards her other brother and smiled with tears in her eyes. She held her arms out and gave him a look that said ‘if you don’t hug me now I will kill you later’. He laughed nervously and hesitantly hugged the girl. She thought everything through for a second before a confused look crossed her face.
“Where’s Katsu and Kouga?” She looked around the room to see if she had only missed them. She saw: Inuyasha leaning on Miroku’s wheelchair, which inhabited Miroku, Sango sitting on the edge of her bed with Shippou sitting on her lap chatting happily, Souta standing nervously next to her, Kohaku sitting in a chair in the opposite corner of the room, and Emi walking around and chatting with everyone. Two things were missing; her ‘father’ and her boyfriend. Her lesser friends weren’t there, true, but she would see them soon enough. She swallowed her hurt of not having them there with everyone else and made sure a smile stayed on her face.
“Well…Dear, Katsu is working over-time tonight…Poor dear, he works too much. He should be home tonight though. So, I believe he’ll stop by today or tomorrow. The hospital did say that we can take both you and Miroku home tomorrow.” She smiled lovingly down at her foster daughter. Said daughter smiled and nodded her head in understanding.
Still, inside she really wanted to know why Kouga wasn’t there. Katsu worked to make sure her, her ‘mother’, and her ‘brothers’ had a decent life. Since Kagome wasn’t in the foster care system exactly and only there because it was somewhere where the allowed her to stay, they weren’t getting money from the government for her. She sighed and told everyone that she wanted to rest. Emi immediately agreed and started shooing everyone out. She wheeled Miroku towards his room, to spend some time with him.
Kagome had her eyes closed and hadn’t noticed that a certain person stayed behind. Eyes filled with concern stared down at her. He cleared his throat to grab her attention.
“Kagome?” The miko’s eyes fluttered open and she looked up to see what the matter was. No sooner had she opened her eyes, than she was pulled into another tight hug. Once she had gotten over the initial shock, she wrapped her arms around the person and hugged them back just as hard.
“Kagome, I was scared. I was scared of what would happen if you never woke up.” The poor boy’s voice failed him as his voice cracked. He buried his face in the girl’s hair and breathed deeply; inhaling her scent. She laughed kindly.
“Inuyasha! You know I would never leave you guys! You, Sango, and Miroku, I love you all too much to just leave! You’re my best friends!” She smiled at him even though he couldn’t see it.
He pulled away to look into her eyes. “No…Kagome that’s not what I mean…I mean I don’t think…Well…You getting hurt like that…It got me thinking’ ya know? Well…I don’t think I could live if you died…”
She blinked at him in confusion. “Inuyasha…I don’t know what you mean…” She tried to comprehend what he was trying to get at, but she was a at loss. The hanyou took a deep breath and prepared to voice what he truly felt.
“Kagome, I’m so sorry I was late!” Both teens turned towards the doorway to see Kouga standing, holding a bouquet of daisies in his hands. The girl smiled brightly up at him. The wolf shot the hanyou a cold glare and the hanyou begrudgingly moved away from the bed.
“Bye Kags…See ya later.” He managed to keep his eyes trained on the floor as he left the room, shutting the door behind him.
“Kouga…” The girl looked up hopefully at her boyfriend. “I thought you weren’t going to come…I thought maybe you really didn’t care enough to come.” She felt so horrible for doubting and tears rose to her eyes.
“Kagome…” He whispered softly. “It’s okay…” He set the roses down on the night table and sat next to the girl to comfort her. “You shouldn’t doubt me, you know.” She nodded.
“I know…It’s just…You weren’t here.” She started sobbing, the effects of the day just overwhelming her.
“Shh…Honey…its okay…” He patted his girlfriend’s back helplessly. Slowly, her crying subsided and she wiped her tears away, laughing at her silliness.
“Sorry…” She mumbled looking at her hands. ‘I wonder what it was Inuyasha was trying to tell me.’
“It’s okay.” He smiled down at her.
Katsu did come to see Kagome that night. It wasn’t long after Kouga left, and Kagome was glad that she wasn’t alone all afternoon. When Katsu finally did leave at closing time, Kagome made her way to Miroku’s room. She felt too alone to be by herself. She didn’t know why, but a sinking feeling that something horrible was going to happen wouldn’t leave her. Thus, she didn’t want to be alone until the feeling left. Not only that, but she couldn’t figure out what the hell it was that Inuyasha had wanted to tell her. And it sure as hell was bugging her. She had to do whatever she could think of to keep her mind off both things.
Inuyasha lay on his bed and staring at his ceiling. ‘I find myself here a lot now don’t I?’ He laughed at his own pathetic ways. ‘I wonder if Kagome knows what I was trying to tell her. Although…I don’t think I should tell her…Kouga would kill me…He’s excessively possessive…I don’t think he’s good enough for her. Besides, he’s already betrothed to Ayame! Why doesn’t the stupid asshole just stay with her!?’ He angrily flung a pillow across the room. It landed with a soft ‘thunk’ on the floor. He sighed once more and tried to sleep.
Sleep wouldn’t come. He glanced towards his clock and was surprised Rin hadn’t come in yet. He silently got up and left his room in search of her.
He arrived at her room and quietly opened the door. His eyes widened and his facial features softened at the sight. Sesshomaru was snoring softly on Rin’s bed with her snuggled up against him. Inuyasha hurried off to grab a camera and grab a snapshot of the ‘adorable’ moment between the Ice King whom hated humans and his human daughter.
