Chapter 23

Kouga was preparing to go eat dinner with his betrothed’s parents, on his own parents’ wishes when his cell phone rang.

“Hello? Inuyasha? Why are you calling me? Kagome? I’ll be right there!” He flipped his phone shut and opened it again. He quickly dialed his eventually-to-be-in-laws and told them what was going on. They said it was okay and that they would make a rain check.

He ran out to his truck and got in. He hesitated on putting the keys in the ignition. ‘Kagome…Oh my god…It’s just one tragedy after another in your life isn’t it? I’m so sorry honey…I promise myself I’ll always be here for you…I promise…’ He thrust the keys into the ignition and started the vehicle. He revved the engine before speeding down the driveway and towards the interstate. He drove recklessly, thank god not getting in an accident for poor Kagome’s sake.

Kagome couldn’t believe that Inuyasha just left her like that. They spilled their hearts to each other, and then he just leaves and tells her he can’t be around her, yet he was still there for her?

She flung herself on her pillow and sobbed to her hearts content. Kiei, seeming to sense its owner’s distress mewed consolingly in her ear and licked her cheek. She smiled, swatting the kitten away. She sat up and wiped her tears away.

“Kiei…You’re not going to leave me too, are you?” The little kitten blinked up at her and licked her hand. She laughed and picked it up and held it close to her. She took a deep breath and placed a smile on her face.

“I love you so much little kitty.” Before she could say more, knocking was heard on her door. “Well, Kiei, I’m just popular today aren’t I?” She laughed, placing the feline on her bed and walking over to answer her door. She was shocked to see Kouga standing at her bedroom door.

“Kouga?” He threw his arms around her, shocking her.

“Kagome…I’m so sorry. I’m here for you.” He kissed her lightly on the lips and led her towards her bed. He sat down and she sat down across from him. (What were all you perverts thinking he was going to do!?)

She bit her bottom lip nervously. ‘I do like the guy…It’s not as if I hate him…He is/was my first real boyfriend…’ Kouga cleared his throat, interrupting her thoughts.

His eyes bore into her own. She shifted uncomfortably. “Kagome…I can tell that something is bothering you…Is it something besides your family?” He inquired taking her hand in his own.

She allowed him to hold her hand, even though she felt uneasy about it.

“Kouga…” Her voice failed her. He took this as it being about her family and pulled her into a warm embrace. ‘Damn him…I’m not heartless! I can’t break up with the guy who’s trying to comfort me! Damn it!’ “No Kouga.” She pushed herself away. He looked at her, confusion evident on his face.

“Kagome, what’s wrong?” He reached out to touch her cheek but she swatted his hand away.

“Kouga, you’re not making this any easier on me!” He scooted away from her slowly. Unsure of what was going on.

“Kouga…I can’t do this anymore.” She mumbled out to him.

“You can’t do what anymore, honey?” He looked at her with genuine concern.

“Don’t look at me like that!” She stood up waving her arms around furiously. The poor boy was confused as to what was going on. Anger consumed her need to save the boy’s feelings.

“Kouga, I’m not heartless!”

“I never said you were-”

“NO!” She lashed out at him. “Kouga, I’m in love with Inuyasha! Not you. I’ve always been in love with him.” Instantly regretting what she said she clapped her hands over her mouth. “Kouga, no! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean for anything to come out like that!” He held up his hands, standing up.

“No…I always knew you’d go for that dog shit over me. But, alas, it wouldn’t have lasted anyway. I’m betrothed to Ayame.” She nodded.

“I’m glad you understand! I don’t think I could have lived with myself if we weren’t to be friends anymore.” She gleefully threw her arms around him. He nodded grimly and returned her hug.

That night Kouga went home feeling slightly disheartened, and Kagome cried herself to sleep with Kiei in her arms. The next day she would have to face school, which was somewhere she hadn’t been in a while. She shook her head not wanting to think horrible thoughts right before bed.

Although, she couldn’t get thoughts of Inuyasha out of her head.

‘So, he really does love me…But will we be together? Or will someone stop us?’

Two chapters until the end. I’m starting to feel drained of my writing abilities with how much I’ve actually been working the past two days. -Sigh- Please review.
