Chapter 24

Sorry for not updating…Summer…The lazy days…Yup….-drinks soda-…Oh and I changed my mind…It’ll probably be a while before the end. =) Kind of angst-love here…

Emi and Katsu had decided that it would be best to let Kagome continue to go to school. They believed that a normal routine would help her with her mourning. They also invited for Sango, Kohaku, and Souta to come over for dinner and stay the night if needed. Since Kagome now had no guardian, she was officially their foster child. They had called the social services and explained everything to them. They had somewhat reluctantly allowed for Kagome to stay under their care.

Emi was grateful. She treated every one of her foster children as if they were her own. And she truly did feel for Kagome. She felt horrible for the ordeal the poor girl was going through. She had no idea the internal battles the girl was fighting within herself, but she knew that the peril of her mother and grandfather’s death scarred her for life.

Living your whole life knowing something, only to have it snatched away before you learned to truly appreciate it? ‘How horrible that must feel…That poor girl…I’m so sorry this had to happen to you Kagome…As if you hadn’t been through enough…’

Emi quietly walked into the children’s room. She smiled at the angelic looks their faces held. Her heart swelled and she remembered why she became a foster mother in the first place. She loved the innocence of the young.

Gently she shook Shippou awake. He murmured quietly and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and smiling up at his ‘mother.’

“Go and set the table for breakfast, Shippou, please?” He nodded and stretched, getting up. “Thank you sweetie.” She moved to Miroku’s sleeping form.

“Miroku, honey…Wake up…” He grumbled and waved her away.

“Five more minutes Mom.” She put her hands on her hips and quietly scolded him.

“Don’t you, ‘five more minutes Mom,’ me, mister! You get your butt up now and help with breakfast!” He drowsily opened his violet eyes and upon seeing the stern look on her face, he scrambled out of bed. He mockingly saluted and headed out of the room.

Next, she went to Kagome. She sat down on the edge of the bed and gently stroked the sleeping girl’s hair. She stirred and clutched her kitten closer to her. Emi smiled warmly and whispered to her.

“Kagome…It’s time to get up. You have to go back to school today.” The girl slowly returned to the world of consciousness and her eyes opened to reveal her dazzling brown orbs.

“G’morning Emi.” She smiled up at the woman. She nodded her head in response and told the girl to get ready for school.

A girl with long silky raven hair stood hesitantly outside of her house. She pulled at her long sleeves nervously; she was dressed in the traditional mourning colors. Standing next to her were her two brothers. One, young and with orange/red hair. The other, tall and with stunning violet eyes. They were waiting for their ride to arrive.

After not to long of waiting a young man with stunning silver hair and doggie ears pulled up. They all piled in and the hanyou avoided the young girl’s gaze. She looked puzzled but assumed he didn’t know about her break up with her boyfriend yet.

‘He’ll find out soon enough I suppose…’

That day, upon returning to school, everyone welcomed her warmly. News spread quickly around their large town, as everyone always knew someone who loved gossip. So, by the end of the day, everyone had learned of her recent loss. Some said nothing, only gave her knowing looks. Others voiced their apologies. She tried to keep a brave façade on the outside, while on the inside, she was torn up. On the inside, it was like a waterfall of tears. Right now, she had nothing. She had no mother, no grandfather, no boyfriend, and no best friend.

Sango was missing from school that day. Miroku told her it was because she had to work this morning. ‘Isn’t it supposed to be illegal for a minor to work during school hours? Oh well…She needs it…’

Also by the end of the day, she hoped that Inuyasha had heard of her breaking up with Kouga…She really needed her best friend right now.

When she questioned Miroku where they would be going this evening he told her of Emi’s dinner plans. Kagome smiled at the thought that Emi really did care.

‘Maybe things won’t be so terrible after all…

Sango, Kohaku, Souta, and Inuyasha arrived promptly at 6:00 p.m. that night. Kagome gleefully let them in, as she looked them over.

Sango looked tired from working all day, but she still looked beautiful as she always did. She had her long dark brunette hair down and it waved slightly. She had on a pink tank top with green capris on. She hugged her best friend before following her to her room.

Kohaku and Souta both wearing tee shirts, Kohaku green and Souta blue, and jeans followed Shippou to the living room to play video games before supper.

Inuyasha was wearing a red shirt with jeans and had his long silver hair respectfully pulled back in a low ribbon. He shoved his hands in his pocket as he and Miroku followed the girls to the bedroom.

Once inside they all sat down in comfortable positions. Kagome lay on her stomach on her bed and faced the rest of them. Miroku sat with his back against the wall, opposite Kagome with Sango lounging in his lap. Inuyasha sat with his back against Kagome’s bed and facing the other two.

Kiei, afraid of the two semi-strangers hid under Kagome’s bed whilst they were there.

Absently, Kagome played with Inuyasha’s hair. An awkward silence filled the room. None of them really knows what to say to the other. Inuyasha had heard about the break up, but was fighting an inner battle about when to discuss anything with her. He certainly didn’t want to have a private conversation such as that when the lecher and his girlfriend were in the room!

Kagome was in her own world, thinking about everything that had happened since her mother had told her and Souta about their financial troubles.

Sango was thinking about her own financial troubles, while Miroku was in his own world of perverted thoughts.

They were all equally glad when Emi stuck her head in the room and told them all dinner was ready. I don’t think any of them could get out of the room quicker than they did.

That night after supper, Emi had told them all it was unsafe to drive at night and that they should all stay there for the night. After all, they were prepared with extra clothes and such.

The sleeping arrangements were as follows:

Shippou, Kohaku, and Souta all slept on the large living room couch. Sango slept in Shippou’s bed, Miroku and Kagome in their own, while Inuyasha slept on a cot between Kagome and Miroku.

Inuyasha was relieved. The sleeping arrangement would allow him to talk with Kagome. He lay for a while, making sure Miroku and Sango were asleep before whispering to Kagome.

“Are you asleep?” She turned towards him, the light catching her eyes, making her seem more even lovelier. “Kagome…Can we talk?” She nodded her head, fully knowing that he could see her even with the minimal amount of light in the room. She sat up and scooted to the side of her bed, patting the spot next to her for him to sit there. He complied and once he was situated, he spoke.

“Kagome, why did you break up with Kouga? You didn’t have to, you know.” His ears flattened to his head as he held back a growl at saying the wolf’s name.

“Yes I did, it wasn’t working. And you know full well why Inuyasha! I know you can’t have forgotten our conversation yesterday.” She laid her head on his shoulder; he comfortably wrapped his arm around her waist.

“I know…But I wanted you to say it Kagome…I want nothing but the truth from you…I don’t want my heart to be broken because you love someone more than me. You wouldn’t hurt me, would you Kags?” He looked deep into her eyes, seeing into her soul. He saw the pain and heartache she suffered. He wished with everything he had that he could make everything better. That he could scare away her night demons and just make her life a living fairy tale.

She snuggled closer to him and he lifted her onto his lap. “I would never hurt you, Inu. You know I love you. Not only as my best friend, but also as more. I love you so much Inuyasha…Just the mention of not being able to see you hurt so much…” Tears rolled down her face and he kissed every one that fell.

“I know…That’s how I feel about you…Kagome…I love you so much…I’m pretty sure you will comply with this…But will you go out with me?” She muffled a giggle and nodded. He pulled her into a deep kiss.

That night they fell asleep and Kagome slept better than she had in many nights. She felt safe in the arms of the boy she loved. And he felt as if a weight had been lifted up and squeezed her lightly before following her into the land of dreams.
