Chapter 4: A New Job and A New Rival
Aoi's POV
Three weeks had passed since our first day and things were going pretty smoothly. Hana and I caught up on all the work we had missed and we joined our perspective clubs. Both Hana and I joined the chorus, I joined the drama club and Hana joined the soccer team. Also Bankostu and I still talked and so did Hana and Sesshomaru but she said that for some reason most of their conversations were brief. Even still I was relieved that the ASF hadn't bothered her about talking to him (at least not yet). It had become a routine of Hana and I going to school together. When I got to her house I honked the horn. Within a few minutes she ran outside and got in the car.
“Hey Aoi-chan!” she said.
“Hey. You seem very happy this morning.”
She smiled and said “I am. You know with Chiyo's classes and volleyball practices she hasn't been able to come to work much lately so I've been stuck at the sweet house all by myself. But I found the perfect solution!”
“What's that?” I asked.
“Well…you know how you were saying a little while ago that you wished you didn't have to ask your aunt for money all the time?”
“Yeah…what about it?” I asked, wondering where she was getting at.
“Well I figured you could make your own money if you had a job!”
I was immediately turned off and said “It's sounds good but I'm just not a working girl.”
“But you wouldn't have to do much! I could teach you how to use the register if you wanted to do that. Or you could clean up or help with storage or anything! Besides…you could have your own money and I wouldn't have to work alone anymore…”
“Wait. You want me to work at the sweet house with you?”
“Well duh Aoi, that's what I've been implying.”
I then realized how obvious it had been and said “Okay so I had a slow moment. But well…I've never really had a real job before. I just don't think I could do it.”
I thought that would stop her but Hana kept on insisting. “I promise you it'll be easy…and fun! The hours are really flexible so they won't interfere with your after school stuff. And…you get discounts on all of the goods including cookies and brownies…”
I suddenly became interested and said “R-really? That's hot! Do those discounts also include cupcakes by chance?”
Hana nodded and said “Yep! So…will you do it? Will you?”
I realized how much working with me meant to her and I began thinking that getting a job wouldn't be so bad. There were benefits after all. After giving it some thought I smiled at Hana and said “Alright. You've convinced me!”
“Yay, I get to work with my sister!” Yeah…one of those benefits was making my sister happy.
Hana's POV
When Aoi and I got to school we went straight to our lockers as we usually did. But when we got there we were surprised to see Sayo leaning on my locker. I figured she was waiting for me. I went to straight up to her and said “What do you want Sayo?”
She looked at me with those evil eyes of hers and said “I heard you've been talking to Sesshomaru-sama.”
I shrugged and said “Yeah? What about it?”
“You know the rules. Only official ASF members can talk to him and the last time I checked you're not a member. So you'd better stop talking to him or else.”
I rolled my eyes and said “Oh please. Just because everyone else is intimidated by you don't mean I am.”
“Well you may not be intimidated now but you will be. So you better stop if you know what's good for you.” With that said she walked away.
“Wow girl! You are BOLD!” Aoi said.
“Tch, someone needed to tell off that hoe!” I told her. And it was the truth! I wasn't going to ruin a potential relationship just because of some jealous little girls.
Aoi and I found Kagome and we were headed to our homeroom classes. We passed by the principal's office and through the window we saw a girl who we hadn't yet seen before around the school talking to the principal with a student aide by her side.
“Hey Hana, I don't think we're the `new girls' anymore.” Aoi said to me.
“Well it has been three weeks and most people know who you two are by now. What are you talking about, Aoi?” Kagome said.
Aoi and I pointed in the girl's direction. Kagome's jaw dropped and she started running away.
“Wait, Kagome!” Aoi and I yelled after her.
“I can't believe she's here. I mean she told me she would come but I didn't think she was serious…” Kagome said talking more to herself than to us.
When we finally caught up to her, Kagome looked as if she might cry. “What's the matter Kagome?” Aoi asked.
Kagome wiped her face and said, “That girl you just saw, that's my cousin. Her name is Kikyo.”
“Oh.” Aoi and I both said.
“But wait, aren't you happy that you're going to be able to spend time at school with your cousin?” I asked.
Kagome looked at the ground, “You see, Kikyo and I don't exactly have a nice, friendly relationship like most cousins…”
I'm sensing a deep, flashback-inducing family history coming on Hana, what about you?
Ditto.
“Okay, Kikyo's father, my uncle, is the CEO of this major company thing. So basically they're filthy rich. Since my parents are pretty much middle-class and don't get as much money as they do, we're looked down upon as seen as nothing compared to the rest of our family.”
“That's terrible” I said.
“Yeah, I know. See before Kikyo went to a private, all-girls' school; but apparently she got into some trouble there and now she's transferring here.”
“So then you did already know that Kikyo was coming here?” Aoi asked.
“No, she told me that she was changing schools, she never told me that she was coming to my school…” Kagome sighed. “This is terrible! She ruins my life enough at home, why does she have to ruin my life at school too?”
“Well what exactly has she done to make you dislike her so much?” I asked.
Kagome went down the list; when they were five Kikyo put a spider down her shirt (Kagome has arachnophobia), when they were ten Kikyo put bubblegum in Kagome's hair so that she'd have to cut it all off (even though it clearly grew back), and when they were thirteen Kikyo told Kagome's crush that she was a lesbian and he never spoke to her again. But what put the icing on the cake was when Kikyo pawned an heirloom that belonged to Kagome's mother in order to buy a Dolce and Gabbana bag and blamed Kagome for it which resulted in Kagome being grounded for a year.
“You poor thing.” Aoi said.
“I can only imagine what she has in store for me here,” Kagome said. “Oh no, here she comes!”
Indeed she was coming, in four inches high heels, a miniskirt, and a busty-looking tank top.
Okay now I realize that she's a new student and all and might not have her uniform, but where the hell does she think she is with that outfit on? I heard Aoi ask.
A hooker house? Playboy mansion? I dunno man!
“Okay you two, let me huddle behind you so that she doesn't see me-“Kagome said.
“Omigawd! It's my favorite cousin in the whole entire world!”
I think it's too late for that, I thought
Kikyo click-clacked over to us in her neck-breaking heels and gave Kagome a crushing hug.
“Oh it's been such a long time!” Kikyo said with a false sweet voice.
“Actually it's only been a week.” Kagome whispered, but I don't think Kikyo was paying any attention. She spun around to look at us while hitting Kagome in the face with her large hooker earrings. “Now Kagome, why haven't you introduced me to your little friends?” Kikyo asked once again in her false sweet voice.
You hear that Aoi? We're her little friends.
Kagome got a sad look on her face as if someone had stolen her best friend.
“Kikyo these are my friends, their names are Hana Miyashita and Aoi Hanamori. Twins, this is my cousin Kikyo Hidaka.” Kagome said in a monotone voice.
Kikyo looked puzzled, “You two are twins?” she asked.
Oh yeah, they're related. The obvious-question-asking totally reveals it.
For real! I mean do we not look exactly alike except for your glasses?
“Yeah, we're twins.” I decided to respond.
“Well, if you two are twin sisters then why don't you two have the same last name?”
The `very awkward silence of death' took over.
“That's none of your business” Aoi said.
Aoi!
What? I don't like her already!
“Well excuse me!” Kikyo said sounding offended. “Hmph. Well I need to go. I'll see you later Kagome.” Aoi and I didn't miss the malice in her voice when she said her name. She then walked away with a stride in her step.
I don't care how goody-goody she was trying to act, that girl definitely does not rock my socks. Aoi said.
Yeah. Seriously. I agreed.
“Well now that she's gone…” Kagome said with a sigh of relief. “I have been curious to know why you two have different last names. But I just never asked because you know…it's none of my business.”
“We'd rather tell you then Miss Skankity slut slut.” Aoi said.
“Well…why don't we wait until later on?” I suggested. “I have a feeling everyone else will want to know too.”
Later on at lunch…
Aoi's POV
“Hey girls…I've been wondering…how come you two have different last names?” Sango asked.
“Yeah I've wondered about that myself.” Miroku said.
Told you Hana said.
Okay Ms. Psychic you were right.
So we went on and told everyone our story on how we met and everything. When we finished Kagome smiled and said “Wow. It's just like Tia and Tamara from Sister, Sister. Separated at birth and reunited years later…”
“Yep. That's exactly what it's like.” Hana said.
While we had been telling the story we had no idea that a certain someone had been eavesdropping. “So that explains it!” Kikyo said out of no where.
“Huh? Where the-What the-Why the HELL is she here!?” Sango said in shock.
Kagome sighed and said “She transferred here Sango.”
“Well she needs to transfer somewhere else because she is NOT staying here.”
“Sorry sweetie but the arrangements have already been made.”
I leaned over to Kagome and whispered “What's Sango's issue with Kikyo?”
“Well to tell it briefly, Sango and I have been best friends since we were little so whenever we were together…”
“Kikyo would torture her too.” I said finishing her sentence.
“Pretty much, yeah.”
“Um why were you eavesdropping on our conversation?” Hana asked.
“Why else? Since your sister wouldn't tell me why you two have different last names I had to find out another way.”
“I didn't tell you because it was none of your business!” I said. “Unless I'm sadly mistaken I did mention that before did I not?”
“Well, if it's none of my business, then why is it any business of Kagome's or Sango's?”
I turned completely around to face Kikyo, “They're our friends, that's why.”
“Oh, and what does that make me? Are you saying I can't be your friend too?” Kikyo asked. I wasn't sure what was up with her stupid sweet-sugary voice but it was annoying me.
“No, unfortunately I don't like Playboy bunnies; especially the stuck-up, annoying, nosey ones.”
Miroku, acting like himself, started going `Ooooh!' really loudly trying to make a scene.
“Can you shut up?!” Sango yelled, “Why do you have to turn nothing into something?”
“Calm down Sango, there's no need to raise your voice just because you can't control your man-whore.” Kikyo said.
Hana and I looked at each other. Sango and Miroku? No way, they don't actually go together like that, do they? I asked.
Nu-uh, they have some `splainin' to do later when all of this drama is over.
“Okay, I've been missing the hint for all of these years but now I see- it's perfectly clear to me Kikyo that you want me to beat you senseless!”
“Sango give me a break, you couldn't even beat yourself senseless!” Kikyo said.
That was a dumb comeback.
You wanna tell her that?
Yup…
“That was a dumb comeback.” I said. I don't know why everyone was so afraid of her.
Kikyo looked like she was going to say something else but the bell rang signaling for us to move on to our next class.
“We'll continue this conversation later. We need to get reacquainted; it's obvious that you don't know who the hell you're messing with…”
And without another word Kikyo walked away.
Nyah Nyah Nyah, I mocked Kikyo in my head.
And you called me bold, she is gonna get you! Hana said.
Oh please, get me with what? Her stiletto pumps? I think not!
We both laughed while filing out of the cafeteria. Hana did have a point about one thing though; attending Sunrise High School with Kikyo Hidaka would be one hell of a year…
Later that day, after school…
Kagome, Hana, and I were talking, about to walk through the gate, when Kagome suddenly stopped walking and looked backwards.
“'Sup Kagome?” I asked.
She inclined her head towards Inuyasha, who we saw isolating himself by a tree.
“What's the matter? I thought he always kept to himself.” Hana said.
Kagome sighed, “Yeah but I can't help but feel sorry for him sometimes. I mean, besides me, Sango, and Miroku, Inuyasha doesn't really have any friends. And even then, he doesn't really consider us friends. We're more like acquaintances to him.”
Hana and I nodded our heads in understanding.
“I'm going to go talk to him, you guys coming with me?” Kagome asked.
“Uh…”
“Kagome, why do you do this to yourself?” Sango asked. “You constantly try to become Inuyasha's best friend, and you always end up with the same result…”
“Failure, I know, I know.” Kagome said.
“Then why-? Never mind, I'll come with you if the twins do. Whaddya say twins?” Sango asked us.
“Sure!” We both replied, and we all walked towards Inuyasha.
When he saw us coming he tried to pretend like he didn't see us. Naturally, this didn't work.
“Hi Inuyasha!” Kagome said in her very conspicuous, high-pitched voice.
“Hey.” Inuyasha said in a `just saying it because…' sort of way.
“Are you okay? We saw you all alone and decided to check on you.” Kagome said.
Doesn't she mean she decided to check on him?
I guess so, but it's Kagome, give her a break.
Inuyasha sucked his teeth. “Honestly woman, what are you my keeper? Am I like a five year old, snot-nosed kid who always needs someone to see if he's alright?”
That's what he's acting like. Hana thought.
“No! Inuyasha it's nothing like that, I'm just trying to be your friend…” Poor Kagome looked so distressed. Anyone could tell how hard she was trying to be friendly, anyone except Inuyasha apparently.
“I don't need your sympathy!” Inuyasha said harshly.
Kagome looked like she was just about to give up and leave, when we saw a cyclone of all things headed towards us.
“Oh god…” I heard Sango mutter under her breath.
Another friend? I thought.
Why do you sound so shocked? Hana replied, You should be used to this by now.
I know, right?
The cyclone stopped right beside Kagome. When it cleared we saw that it was in fact a student. He had an athletic build, with tanned skin, blue eyes, and long black hair.
“Hey Kagome,” he said, “How've you been?”
“Hi Koga.” Kagome said as if she really didn't want to talk to him. “I'm fine, how are you?”
“I'm great. Is he bothering you?” he said inclining his head towards Inuyasha.
“Actually…” Kagome began to say…
“It's obvious that she wanted to talk to me you mangy wolf! So do you think I was bothering her?”
“Shut up, mutt! I asked Kagome! You're not Kagome so don't reply!” said Koga.
“Who the f-ck do you think you're yelling at?!” Inuyasha yelled clearly getting angrier by the second.
“I'm yelling at you, asshole!” Koga yelled back.
Just as Inuyasha was about to lunge at Koga, Kagome stood between the two demons (demon and half-demon if you want to be politically correct). “Do you guys have to fight every single time you see each other? Honestly, it's so annoying.” Kagome said.
Koga took a step forward so that he was once again, right next to Kagome.
“Okay Kagome, I'll try to stop fighting-for you.” He said to Kagome, making sure he added emphasis to the `for you'.
As if on cue, Koga noticed me and my sister looking at everyone with great interest and walked over to us. He put each of his elbows on one of our shoulders.
“Hey ladies, you must be new here. I don't think I've seen you before.” Koga said politely.
“Naw, I guess that would mean they are new here now wouldn't it, Koga?” Inuyasha asked sarcastically.
Koga completely ignored him and continued talking to us, “So what are your names?”
“I'm Aoi Hanamori.”
“And I'm her twin sister, Hana Miyashita.”
“Aoi and Hana, I like it-Koga Matsuno is the name. Nice to meet ya.” I was so glad he decided not to ask about our last names. I'd had just about enough of that.
He took out his cell phone to check the time then put it away. “Well it looks like it's time for me to go. Bye twins…bye Kagome.” The way he said Kagome's name sounded almost like he was trying to flirt with her. In a way it was sort of funny.
After his famous last words, Koga vanished into his cyclone and sped away. Once he left, I heard Inuyasha sighing, “This always happens…” and then he walked away.
“Inuyasha, wait!” Kagome yelled after him, but as expected he kept on walking.
“I wonder what he meant by that, `This always happens'.” Kagome said.
“Well duh, every time Inuyasha gets a chance to actually talk to you, he starts yelling even though he really doesn't intend to, it's just his habit. And then even if he doesn't start yelling, by shocking coincidence Koga happens to interrupt him every time you two end up together. He's obviously frustrated because he can't tell you his feelings, Kagome!” Sango said putting in her insight after being verbally absent for like, ten minutes.
“That is total crap Sango, Inuyasha doesn't like me.” Kagome said.
“I think it's exactly the way Sango described it.” Hana said.
“Hana, you're supposed to be on my side!” Kagome said.
“It's the truth! It's obvious that you and Inuyasha have feelings for each other but both of you are too shy to admit it.”
“Oh fine, whatever!” Kagome said.
Hana and I shrugged out shoulders and turned to Sango, “You wanna explain to us about Koga?” I asked.
Sango looked as if she was surprised that we would ask,”Oh, okay. Well Koga is…”
“A wolf demon who constantly gets into fights with Inuyasha because he's in love with Kagome and sees Inuyasha as his archrival,” Hana said out of nowhere. “Am I right?”
Sango nodded. “You're good.”
“I'm catching on…” Hana said.
“Hey, where did Kagome go?” I asked.
Sure enough, we looked around and Kagome was nowhere to be seen.
“Aw, she probably got upset with us and decided to vanish. Speaking of which, it's about time for me to vanish too, later!”
“Bye Sango!” Hana and I yelled after her as we watched her walk away.
When she vanished from our sight, Hana started talking to me, “So, are you about ready for your first day at your new job?”
I was confused, “Sure but, don't I like, need to ask or whatever before I can actually get the job?” I asked.
Hana smiled at me. “Oh you don't need to worry about that, I talked to my boss and he said he would be glad to hire you since you were my sister.”
“Sweet…Pun not intended!” I said quickly.
“Oh wow…” Hana said, and we both started laughing.
Hana's POV
“Oh my gosh, this uniform is so cute!” I heard Aoi say referring to the uniforms we had to wear at the sweet shop. They were bright pink, puffy dresses with a magenta apron. The apron had `Kiyoko's Sweet Shop' on the front. Personally, it reminded me of that show I used to watch when I was younger, `Cardcaptor Sakura'. It looked like one of those crazy-cute costumes that Tomoyo would always make for Sakura when she went out to seal a card. But if Aoi liked it I wasn't going to complain. “Yeah, it is isn't it?”
“Yeah, for an outfit with so much pink it doesn't look that bad. At least it's not like the `Kumbayah' school.” Aoi said.
“Huh?” I asked.
“Nothing.”
For some reason that day we had a lot of customers; but at least Aoi was being kept occupied. When our last customer left Aoi said, “Oh my gosh Hana I really commend you! This `working' thing is so much harder than it actually looks!”
I rolled my eyes, “And you know what the coolest part is? Sixty percent of teenagers like us actually do this stuff too!”
“Wow…” Aoi said, not picking up my sarcasm. For someone who used sarcasm so much she sure was slow in picking it up sometimes.
I was just about to go back into the storage room when Aoi poked me in the shoulder.
“What's up?” I asked.
“Look who it is!”
Across from our shop there was a park where a lot of children usually went out to play. Aoi was pointing to a little girl with dark brown hair. She was holding someone's hand, it looked like…
“Hey, it's Sesshomaru!” I said.
“Yeah, but I wonder what he's doing with a little girl. She's clearly human so they couldn't be related…”
“Yeah, I know…”
We continued watching Sesshomaru and the little girl. Sesshomaru picked a flower out of the ground and handed it to the little girl, who smiled at his gesture.
“Aw! Who would have thought Sesshomaru was that sweet?” Aoi asked.
“I would have! No one gives him enough credit! He's really not that bad of a guy!” I said.
“Okay, I believe you.” Aoi said terminating the conversation.
I was so curious as to who that little girl was though. I promised myself that the next opportunity I got to talk to Sesshomaru, I would ask him.
