Chapter 5: Becoming Friends
Aoi's POV
Working was hard. Really it was. The next day when I went to pick up Hana so that we could drive to school together, I felt so fatigued from yesterday I had to ask her to drive the car so that I wouldn't fall asleep at the wheel and then we'd end up in a ditch somewhere and then the police wouldn't find our bodies for three days and then…well you get it.
When we arrived at school, after we went to our lockers we searched for Kagome and Sango, but they were nowhere to be found.
“Where is everyone today?” I asked.
“I dunno.” Hana replied.
We couldn't find anyone. Not Kagome, Sango, Miroku, and not even Kikyo (not that we wanted to see her but…).
Hana was just about to call Kagome's cell phone, but then she remembered that it was virtually impossible to get any service within the school building.
“Is today `Abandon the Twins' day or something?” I asked.
“Probably…hey who is that?”
We saw someone walking our way, he looked sorta normal, actually no, he looked sorta creepy. He had long black hair and his eyes were red. Not sickly red, more like they were naturally that color. Following him were a bunch of kids who looked like they were demons. As he walked past us, we heard him saying something…
“I do not suffer. I overwhelm you because I have nothing to lose. Even more power is added to my carnage while the bitter tears of the dead are mixed with the quicksand…”
What in the world? I said to Hana telepathically.
“What in the world?” she repeated out loud, but not intending for them to hear her. However, it didn't work because the gang of demons turned around to look at us, including their creepy ringleader.
He looked at us and started laughing, “Did I scare you two? I didn't mean to, I was totally just messing with your mind! And the best part is, I'm not even high…nope, I'm totally sober!”
Creepy Man and his goons started laughing, but Hana and I weren't amused.
What's up with this guy?
Beats me…
“Um, exactly who are you?” Hana asked.
No Hana don't talk to him, he's gonna cast some evil voodoo spell on you!!! I warned my sister.
Creepy Man started walking back towards us, “You can call me Naraku, new girls…”
“That's Hana and Aoi…” She said pointing to herself then to me.
“Hm, whatever. Just make sure that you stay out of my way and maybe I won't kill you two…”
Okay yeah this guy is crazy…
“Later…” and Naraku walked away with his creepy lackeys.
Just as he left, someone else came, except I was slightly happier to see this person.
There's your man, Hana… I said.
“Hey Sesshomaru,” Hana said ignoring my comment, “What's up?”
“Nothing, what were you talking to him for?”
Hana had a look on her face like she was ashamed for talking to him, “Oh we just ran into each other, made ourselves acquainted…”
Sesshomaru smirked, “Well, you better watch out for him...nothing Naraku says or does will benefit you in any way.”
“Oh well thanks for the warning.” Hana said. Even though I kinda already got that hint from him already. “Oh!” she said as if she just remembered something. “Aoi and I saw you with a little girl yesterday. Um who was she?”
Sesshomaru then gave us a weird look and said “When did you see that? Were you stalking me?”
“NO!” Hana and I said at the same time not wanting him to think we were like the ASF. “We work at Keiko's Sweet House and we saw you out the store window.” Hana explained.
“Oh…that was no one.”
“No one?” I said confused. “But it was someone…”
“I have to go.” Sesshomaru quickly said and then walked away.
“What was…that about?” I asked.
“I have no clue.” Hana said shaking her head.
Hana's POV
With Sesshomaru gone Aoi and I decided to continue looking for everyone. Just as we turned the corner of one of the hallway we saw a group students bunched up together. It was then we saw Miroku and Sango. We ran up to them and asked “What's going on?”
“Inuyasha is about to fight Koga again…” Sango said. “Kagome and Inuyasha were talking and then Koga charged in starting shit.”
“So much for his `promise'.” Aoi said.
“I know, right?”
“C'mon you two, before you get in trouble!” we heard Kagome yell.
We then pushed through the crowd to get a better look. When we were close we saw both Inuyasha and Koga in fighting stance with only Kagome keeping them apart.
“Get out of the way Kagome so I can tear him apart!” Inuyasha yelled.
“No! I'm not going to let you two kill each other over me!”
“Who said it was about you!?”
“C'mon Kagome, why bother with this dog-shit! He's no good for you!”
The two continued to yell obscenities at each other while Kagome tried her best to keep them apart. Meanwhile, the crowd was hyping them up which wasn't helping the situation at all. Not liking how things were looking I decided to step in. “Enough you two!” I yelled.
Everyone suddenly looked at me including Koga, Inuyasha, and Kagome. I turned to Koga and said “Look Koga it is blatantly obvious that Kagome really has no interest in you and why you keep interfering with their conversations I don't know but I think you should do you and her a favor and take a hint! She does NOT like you!”
“How would you know whether or not Kagome likes me?” Koga asked.
“Because…it's OBVIOUS! I haven't even been around you two that long and I can tell.” Jeez, could this guy be that dense?
“Would you shut up? Nobody asked you to interfere!” Inuyasha yelled.
I turned to him and said “Excuse me! I'm trying to help you out.”
“Nobody ever asked for your help!”
“Well guess what? You're getting it anyway!”
I then turned to the crowd and said “Alright now if you guys don't clear out of here in five seconds I'm telling Sesshomaru that all of you were encouraging a fight so you can get suspended!” And sure enough everyone ran away leaving only Koga, Kagome, Inuyasha, me, Aoi, Sango, and Miroku. “Wow good job Hana.” Sango said.
“Thanks.”
“Hmph! What a waste of time! Kagome when you're done dealing with mutt face you know where to find me.” Koga then raced off.
My eye suddenly began twitching and I said “That guy didn't hear a word I said…”
Kagome just sighed and said “I'm used to it. He's the type of guy that doesn't take no for an answer.”
“Oh he'll know what no means when he tries to hit it with some girl and she's says no but then he keeps going and then he gets rape charges and he gets sentenced for like 10 years.” Aoi said nodding her head.
Everyone suddenly looked at Aoi including myself. “What?! It's true.”
“Thank you SVU officer Aoi…” I said sarcastically.
“Anyway thanks Hana…I don't know what I would have done if those two actually fought.”
“I don't know why she did! Koga deserved to get his ass kicked.” Inuyasha said with his arms crossed over his chest.
“That still gave you no reason to fight him!” I said.
“Fight who?”
We all turned around to see Sesshomaru with a very disapproving look on his face. “Um, no one. I mean it was Koga but they didn't actually get in a fight. I broke them up so everything is fine.” I said trying to defend Inuyasha. I really didn't want him to get in trouble, not when Kagome was working so hard to become friends with him.
“Typical. I should have known you'd be causing trouble.”
“Shut up! If Koga wasn't being such an ass…”
“Inuyasha I've told you many times you have to find other ways to deal with your problems. If you get in trouble I'm the one that takes the blame for it.”
Inuyasha just grinned and said “Sucks being you.”
Sesshomaru just groaned and by the way his fist was clenched I could see he was trying hard not to beat the hell out of Inuyasha himself. He turned around and just before walking away he said “Have you ever wondered why nobody wants to be around you? It's because you're a spoiled, foolish half breed.” He then walked away leaving me shocked.
Oh yeah. He isn't all that bad. I mean ridiculing your already insecure brother is definitely a good thing. Aoi said sarcastically.
No…He's really not like that! Inuyasha and him just have a lot of differences…I said trying hard to defend him though the comment itself still left me in a state of shock.
Whatever you say.
Aoi's POV
While Hana and I shared these thoughts we didn't notice that Inuyasha had run away somewhere. Kagome, looking sad all of a sudden, sighed and said “Poor Inuyasha…”
We then saw one of the reasons why Kagome felt so bad for him. He most likely had to deal with comments like that everyday and that must have hurt his already bruised self-esteem (even though he didn't show it). Hana and I looked at each other and nodded. We then grabbed Miroku and Sango and pulled them away from Kagome. We huddled together and I spoke up first. “Alright it's obvious what we need to do.”
“What's that?” Miroku said who was completely clueless because he was staring at Kagome's butt. Sango slapped him and said “Don't mind him. Anyway how are we going to get those two together?”
“Well every good relationship starts with a simple friendship of course. So…we have to get them to become friends first.” Hana said as if she was some type of relationship expert.
“But how? Whenever they try to talk either Inuyasha's uncontrollable anger or Koga's jealousy gets in the way.” Sango asked.
We all thought for a moment and Hana suddenly spoke up. “I got it! Why don't we get Inuyasha and Kagome to a nice place where Koga can't interrupt and Inuyasha is less likely to get mad?”
“Yeah…a place with a nice atmosphere like outside. The weather is really nice today.” Sango said.
“Alright then it's settled. We'll get those two by themselves at lunch today.” I said.
Everyone nodded on our formulated plan even Miroku who was surprisingly paying attention. But they didn't last when he saw a girl walk past us. When Sango noticed where his eyes were trailing and she fumed up with anger. A slap pursued of course.
I sighed. When is he going to learn?
I have no clue. Oh yeah, we still need to find out what's going on between those two. Hana reminded.
Yeah that's right we do. We'll ask them at lunch.
Kagome finally noticed we were huddled together and said “Hey! What are you guys whispering about?”
We all quickly stood up straight and said “Nothing!”
Suddenly the bell rang and we realized if we didn't hurry we'd be late for our first period.
In first period English…
With just enough time to spare we all made it to class on time. Just as we took our seats the late bell rang. During class, I couldn't help but notice that Hana seemed a bit distracted by something. When I tuned into her thoughts I realized what it was.
Sesshomaru really couldn't have meant that could he? I just don't believe that he's a bad guy!
Sorry to break it to ya precious, but I think he meant it. I said. You said so yourself that those two had differences…
Yeah…I guess he wasn't kidding when he said he despised Inuyasha…
He said that? I asked.
Yep it's because Inuyasha gets more attention then he does. Sesshomaru does so much to please his father while all Inuyasha does is gets in trouble most of the time. His father feels it's his responsibility to care for his brother since he's older and everything. Hana explained.
So that's why he said he'd get blamed if Inuyasha got in trouble.
Yep.
Both of us were so in tune in our mental conversation that we didn't realize the teacher had called Hana's name.
“Miyashita-kun!”
“Um, yes?” Hana said breaking from our telepathic bond.
“Good now that I have your attention. I was going to ask you to sing the Star Spangled Banner since you're in the chorus.”
“Uh…in English?” she asked hesitantly.
“Yes. This is an English class.”
“Um…okay…” Hana slowly got up and walked to the front of the class.
How the heck does she know I'm in chorus?! Hana asked.
It actually surprises you? Apparently in this school, everyone knows everything about everyone.
When Hana got to the front she was quiet at first, obviously nervous.
You can do it girl! Knock those peoples' socks off! I said, mentally encouraging her.
She nodded and began to sing, all the while concentrating to remember the words.
O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star - spangled banneryet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,

Everyone clapped and some even cheered when she finished. She bowed slightly and returned to her seat. See! I knew you'd knock their socks off! I said clapping as well. I'd say I knocked their shoes off too!
Hana's POV
Later on at lunch…
As planned everyone met outside. Kagome didn't seem the least bit suspicious and agreed that the weather was beautiful. Sango told us that Inuyasha normally ate outside by himself and it didn't take long for us to spot him (those cute dog ears stood out like a sore thumb). We were also fortunate because Koga didn't have that lunch. When Kagome saw him she began to back away and said “Um guys…why don't we eat inside? The weather's okay but…”
“No buts Kagome. You need to talk to him.” Sango said pushing her.
“But why? It's obvious that he really doesn't want to have anything to do with me.”
“Oh hush woman. You and I both know there's something between you and him. Both of you are just too shy to admit it.” Aoi said.
Kagome looked at all of us like we were crazy. “You guys must be on something, me and Inuyasha as an item? Please, that'll happen when Kikyo becomes a nun…”
“Oh no, believe me it'll happen way sooner than that!” I said trying not to laugh.
Kagome still looked skeptical about sitting with Inuyasha. And she still didn't realize that she was getting absolutely no choice in the matter.
I pulled her towards me and started fixing her collar, “You'll be fine, and we'll be watching you, so technically you won't be completely alone.”
“Gee, that makes me feel better, I think…”
“Go on Kagome-chan! Your true love awaits you!” Sango said as she and I pushed her in Inuyasha's direction. She looked back at us for a second, but when we waved her away she continued walking.
“Man I hope she's gonna be okay,” Aoi said. “I mean don't get me wrong Kagome is just so lovable, but some of the stuff she says, man…”
“I know, but hopefully we won't have to worry too much about that.” I said. I reached into the breast pocket of my jacket and pulled out an earpiece.
“What's that?” Sango asked.
“This,” I said putting it in my ear, “will allow us to hear everything that Kagome is saying. When I was `fixing her collar' earlier, I was actually putting the microphone that transmits back to this earpiece, onto her collar.”
Sango smiled at me, “Aren't you just a little super-spy? How'd you happen to get your hands on that?”
“My younger brother is a little science geek,” I explained, “he's totally into technology and science and stuff like that. He let me use this after I promised him my week's paycheck.”
“Wow, I hope Kagome appreciates all that we're trying to do for her.” Sango said.
“I know, right-hey, where did Miroku go?” Aoi said.
Sango and I turned around and noticed that Miroku was in fact MIA.
“He's apart of this operation too, he needs to be here. Hana you stay here, Sango and I are gonna find Miroku.” Aoi said.
“Sure.” I said.
Aoi's POV
Sango and I looked around for Miroku for a couple of minutes. When I finally spotted him, I was confused as to why I didn't figure out what he was doing earlier. “Found him Sango,” I said. “And I'll give you three guesses as to what he's doing.”
Sango and I both saw Miroku over by the entrance of the school, with his arms wrapped around some girl's waist. He was saying something to her, but what exactly, we couldn't be sure of. I was about to walk over to him and drag him away, when Sango grabbed my shoulder. “No Aoi let him stay. We'll just go back to Hana and tell her that we couldn't find him.” When she said that, she was totally missing her spark, her attitude. I knew something was up. Sango was about to walk away when I stopped her. “Sango I didn't want to be nosy before, but I have to know now. What's going on with you and Miroku? Why did Kikyo make that comment yesterday about him being your `man-whore'? As your friend, I just want to know…”
Sango gave a heavy sigh and put her hand on her forehead like she had a developing migraine. “Okay, I'll tell you…
Sango gave a heavy sigh and put her hand on her forehead like she had a developing migraine. “Okay, I'll tell you…
Hana's POV
So far things didn't seem to be going too bad with Kagome. However all I've been hearing out of her were things like, “Weather's nice today, huh?” and “I like your dog ears! In fact, they remind me of this dog I had when I was nine. His name was Sassy and he…”
And then I heard Inuyasha interrupt her with, “Shut up! I don't want to be compared to your dog if you don't mind!”
“I'm sorry…” I heard Kagome whine.
Inuyasha slammed his hand on the ground, “Ah!-Shit!” I heard him yell.
Apparently there was broken glass on the ground and he cut his hand on one of the pieces. Kagome grabbed Inuyasha's hand and poured water on his cut, and then grabbed a handkerchief from out of her pocket and wrapped it around his hand. “You really need to control your frustration Inuyasha,” Kagome said. “Otherwise you're gonna get hurt like you did just now.”
Surprisingly, Inuyasha didn't sigh, huff, scowl, or anything like that. He did nothing at all. But he did say, “You know, you really aren't that bad after all, I guess.”
I heard the brightness in Kagome's voice when she said, “Really?”
“I mean, you do seem kinda dense. And sometimes you're a little bit too happy. But you did help me just now so I guess you're not that bad.”
“So does that mean we can be friends?” Kagome asked completely ignoring the fact that Inuyasha just insulted her.
He pondered for a second or two, then said, “Just…just don't push it okay?”
“Hooray!” Kagome reached over to hug Inuyasha but he backed away, “Hugging counts as `pushing it'.” He said.
“Okay then, how about we shake on it?” Kagome asked.
“That'll do.” Kagome and Inuyasha shook hands, solidifying their truce. Just then, the bell rang. “I'll talk to you later, okay Inuyasha?” Kagome said as she was about to leave.
“Wait,” Inuyasha said. “Kagome?”
“What's up?” she replied.
“…Thanks,” Inuyasha said looking at the ground “for helping me and stuff.”
“Anytime, that is what friends are for!”
When she walked away, I came out from behind my tree and acted like I had just found her. “So how'd it go?” I asked Kagome while taking my earpiece out before she noticed.
She smiled brightly and said, “He said we could be friends, but I just can't `push it', whatever that means.”
“That basically means don't make fun of his puppy dog ears and things like that.” I said.
“Aw man! His ears are so cute though!” We both laughed.
“Hey Hana, where's Aoi, Sango, and Miroku? Weren't all of you guys supposed to be together?”
I had just noticed that Sango and Aoi were still missing. “Miroku went missing after you left. My sister and Sango went to go look for him but they still haven't come back yet.”
“Oh, well we can't look for them now. So we'll tell them everything the next time we see them.” Kagome said.
“Yeah, okay. I'll see you later Kagome!” And we both went our separate ways.
Aoi's POV
Later that day when I saw Hana in the locker room during the period we had P.E, I explained to her what happened to me and Sango during lunch. I also told her what Sango told me about her relationship with Miroku. Apparently Miroku has been his amorous, yet lovable self ever since middle school. It was then when he first told Sango that he liked…no not even liked…that he loved her and asked her to be his girlfriend. She already knew how he acted towards women, but since she liked him she agreed. But even since then, Miroku's attitude never changed. He still acted the same way towards any female within a five foot radius and he barely pays Sango any attention.
“Poor thing, no wonder she always gets so angry when she sees Miroku fraternizing.” Hanasaid while putting on her gym shirt.
“I know…oh yeah, since we missed it, how did it go with Kagome and Inuyasha?”
“It's quite a story, but basically Inuyasha agreed to be her friend. Just `no pushing it.'” She said making air quotes with her fingers.
“Really? At least she's getting somewhere! There's hope for them yet!” I said pumping my fist dramatically in the air, and accidentally hitting the girl next to me. “I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry…” I kept saying over and over again. Luckily the girl wasn't violent like Sango, otherwise I'd be unconscious.
“But yeah um, that's good that Kagome got somewhere.” I said to Hana with less enthusiasm than before.
Hana laughed at me, “Yeah, let's just hope good luck is still on our side for the matchmaking attempts to come…”
After school that day….
Hana and I were walking to my car so that I could drive her home. Hana was talking about something interesting she learned in Physics class when I saw something that made me drop my bag along with my jaw.
“What's up, Aoi?” Hana asked me.
I pointed over to a very expensive looking car and the people lying up against it. It was none other than Kikyo, pressing herself against Inuyasha with her arms wrapped around his neck.
“What the-?” Hana said with wide eyes.
“Let's go, I don't want her to see us and have her say we were spying on her or something stupid like that.” I said pulling her towards my car which was five feet away.
“Yeah, even though she's on him like butter on bread. You're right, we should go.”
Hana and I got into the car and drove off. While we were on the road, we talked about what we saw.
“I just don't get it, why would Kikyo be interested in Inuyasha?” I asked.
“Well it's either two things,” Hana said searching for a decent radio station. I really wished I had iPod speakers so that I wouldn't have to listen to the radio in the car. She finally decided to turn the radio off and continued talking, “Either Kikyo really likes Inuyasha and is even faster than we thought she was or…”
“Or what?” I asked.
“Or I was right about Kikyo's psyche. She likes making Kagome miserable; therefore she naturally wants anything that Kagome wants. She must know that Kagome has feelings for Inuyasha so she's trying to get him before she does.”
“Wow.” I said, impressed with Hana's psychoanalysis.
“And also, it could be both.” She added.
“That's what I was thinking.” I said. We crossed the intersection, getting closer and closer to Hana's house.
“Do you think we should tell Kagome about this?” she asked.
“I don't think we should,” I said. “You know how easily Kagome gets upset, especially when it comes to Kikyo.”
“Yeah, you've got a point there.”
I know one thing's certain though, Kikyo's not gonna get her way. No, she won't beat Kagome this time…
