Chapter 2 :

A night not so calm…

 

The princess Kagome still sleep peacefully, unaware that the nature around the castle become dead silent, like holding her breath, knowing with instinct that something is about to happen…

 

Suddently, an enorm noise made almost the walls of her bedchamber trembled and awaken the sleeping beauty in a start.

 

She sat up and rubbed her sleepy eyes like a little girl and strech like a kitten and watch around her with her half closed blue eyes.

 

She didn't seem to understand what had awaken her so suddently. The noise mustn't have been recorded in her foggy mind since she seems so totaly unfaze.

 

She look towards the window and saw that it is still the middle of the night obviously.

 

However, she start to hear some screams and people running in the halls.

 

She slips her legs from under her warm sheets and try to put her feet on the floor slowly because she know what await her… The floor is freezing.

 

She groan but still stand up and walk toward the window, her curiosity being stronger than the little discomfort.

At this moment, it is like the time around her froze.

 

It seems that one of the walls protecting the castle exploded. Some parts of the castle even are on fire.

People run everywhere, screaming.

 

At this moment, her bedroom door brust open, making her almost jump out of her skin.

 

" My Lady. " said the servant urgently

 

That didn't help Kagome to calm down her erratic heart.

 

" What happens here…"

 

" The castle is under an attack."

 

Without looking at Kagome, she start to run around the room and the cupboard and put out some clothes.

 

" You have to run away, my Lady, before it is too late. "

 

Kagome couldn't keep her increasing fear from her voice and her anger too that her servant thinks that she will run away with her tail between her legs.

 

" What are you talking about ? I won't run like a coward and let all of you guys and my father behind…"

 

But she stopped her speach when she saw the servant flinch making her even more frightened. She is almost afraid to ask but you can't swim if you don't jump in the water, right ?

 

" What is it, Saya ? " she ask quietly, trying to not let her voice quivering

 

Saya stop and look at her young mistress so much sorrow in her eyes that her breath catch in Kagome's throat

 

" You have to run for your life my Lady. You are the most important treasure of our Lord and all of us, please Princess. "

 

" You speak of me like some king of thing. (she sighs) What's going on Saya ? There is something you are not telling me. "

 

" I…" But the words stay trap in her throat

 

" Saya… ? "

 

The servant ponder if she must say what she know to the young princess. But when she lock her eyes with the pleading ones of Kagome, she feels like she didn't have the choice. She sigh and sit down on the bed, looking at the floor to avoid the troubled blues eyes which was following her every moves. So she start in a whisper

 

" They went directly towards our Lord's bedroom, Princess, so much of them. And they will be there in a short time. (she turns to look at her mistress to plead her with her eyes)You have to flee my Lady. "

 

" M-my f-father… ? "

 

Saya get up and answer in an sigh :

" I don't know my Lady. "

 

Kagome feel like the world crash down on her and have some difficulties to even breath. Her eyes became unfocus and tears run freely on her cheeks.

 

" We don't have a lot of time. Please my Lady, run for your life. We don't know if they want to kill you or worst and we certainly don't want to take the risk. Princess, please, stop crying and run away. "

 

The servant couldn't help it and cry too. She knows the princess for years. She started to work shortly after the queen and the younger child died. She see the young princess more like a little sister to protect than a mistress.

 

Seeing the distress of the servant, Kagome took a deep breath and took Saya in a hug

 

" Ok, Saya, I will do what you said…but where should I go ? "she said softly

 

" I don't know my Lady but out of the Southern Lands. We have to hurry up now. " She said with a new determination in her voice.

 

The servant give the princess a coat

 

" Put this on, Princess. "

 

" Ok. "

 

During this time, Saya open the jewel box and put them in a bag and in a bigger bag with the clothes.

 

" May be you should go where no sane humans will seek you…"

 

" Like the West ? " Kagome said joking.

 

But Saya think about it seriously before answer " Hai. May be you should go towards the West my Lady. "

 

" But I was just joking, a silly idea. Saya, in the West there is almost just youkais, like their Lord and…"

 

But she was cut when the door open again.

 

" Hurry up, they are walking towards here !"

 

" Ok. My Lady remember you have the necklace with the symbole of the South, it can help too. "

 

" Right. "

 

" Don't forget to active it and towards the West is the best idea Princess, like Saya said. Plus, if they try to found you they won't start by this part of the country so you will be « safe ». "

 

" All right, Yumi. "

 

The princess follow the two servants in the halls, and recieved so much glances with light of hope in their eyes from the others servants and guards on their way.

They stop.

 

" One of the guards will show you a safe way out, my Lady. We have to go back. "

 

Kagome hug the two of them and just when she pull away, a guard arrived.

 

" Are you ready Princess, we must go now."

 

"Hai. "

 

She turn around with tears in her eyes

" Thank you, Saya, Yumi and all of you. Please if my Father…"

 

"Hai, we will. "

The two servants are crying now.

" It was an honor to serve you my Lady, and we hope to see you back soon. "

They bow at her and run inside from where they just come.

 

The guard : " Follow me, my Lady, please, hurry up. "

 

"Hai. "

 

And they run.

 

After a moment, they arrived close to a secret door the guard start to speak again

 

" Run now, my Lady. You are the only salut of the South. "

 

"What do you mean, Kairo ? "

 

The guard look at the princess in her beautiful eyes and say softly : "If they had your Father, the only way to have the Southern Lands is to kill you or marry you. You are the only obstacle. "

 

Kagome look at him with wide open eyes in shock and terror. Seeing that, the guard try to comfort her

 

" I'm sorry, I didn't mean to afraid you, my Lady, but I through that you had the right to know the very truth. The reason why we are trying so desesperently to send you away, so may be, in the future, you will be able to come back in yours Lands and save us all. "

 

" I-I...H-how can you all have so much faith in me. I mean, I'm just a teenager. I don't know a thing about how to lead and all. I…" She spoke rapidly

 

He smile down at her and take one of her hand, giving it a gentle squeaze

 

" Because we know you, Lady Kagome. We know that you've the kindest heart and think about the well being of your people. I can really well remember one day, when you argure with your father about something that involve that. You don't even back down in front of your own father. "

 

He look at her, his green eyes shining with so much soft and faith in her. She feel her heart beat even more rapidly. He give her another little smile and leave her hand and add

 

" And you are the heir of the South, the beloved daughter of our Lord. We know that you will help us like you always had. When you will be able to come back and take what is yours. Until then, we will wait your return. " he end in a whisper

 

Kagome look at him in the eyes, tears running on each cheeks. She surprised him by taking him in a bear hug.

 

" Thanks" she whispered soflty against his chest.

 

He try to recomposed himself and return the hug as tigh with pink on his cheeks and answer back softly after taking a deep breath in her beautiful scent.

" You are welcome, my Lady. You just have to stay alive and hid away from there. "

 

She pull out with a taint of pink on her cheeks too. He brush her tears tenderly and smile gently down at her. Her blush deep before she answer : "H-hai."

 

With a last look, she start to walk in the secret passage but stop and turn around

 

" I know it's quite impossible but…but if my father is still alive, say to him that I love him and always will. I will survive what ever the cost. I have to. "

 

The guard look at her with even more respect shine in his eyes.

 

" I promise, my Lady.

I'm sorry to not be able to come with you but someone had to stay to hid again the enter of this secret passage to help your run away. "

 

" Hai, it's ok. All I have to do is to stay alive for a while, ne ? " she said like if it was a little joke to try to hid that she is so much afraid but fail miserably.

 

The guard smile a little at her tentative to reassure him

 

" Yes, princess. "

 

" But you have to promise something too Kairo. "

 

The guard is a little take aback with her suddent serious voice

 

" Of course, my Lady. Anything. "

 

She smile a little at his answer but it disappear again behind her serious face.

 

" You must to stay alived too. If you can, even if you have to serve the monster who k-kill my father…I…Stay alive for me. And if you found others too, it could help may be one day. I will try to hid in the Western Lands, like Saya and Yumi adviced me, if I can. If not, any other Lands but the South. "

 

He look at her with his shining green eyes, and trying to ease the thing which seems to tigh his throat. He is really touch by her concern.

 

" I promise, I will try to stay alive and found others who will do it for you too. If you are in the Western Lands, may be we could try to send a messenger, without saying that you are in their Lands of what happens here. "

 

"Hai, the others Lords have to know. I'm sure it is neither of them who do that act without honor. If you can prevent the Lords of the Southen Lands when you found out who did this, to try to calm them and keep hope without telling about me. Don't tell to anyone about me, not even your messenger. I know a lot of the Lords will not accept anyone who k-kill my Father, but I don't want a civil war torn the Southern Lands on top of it. "

 

An explosion in the castle interrompt them and screams. Kagome look toward it and froze.

 

" it was my room…" she whisper in shock

 

" They must know that you are not in your room already, you have to go, now !! "

 

" Hai. Take care, Kai. "

 

And she run.

 

" No, you take care, Princess. You are our hope. " he whisper before hiding the passage.

 

A smile play gently on his face to the nickname she used to use when he was her personal guard during her travels.

 

Her father was a little afraid that Kairo had became too close to her, too much attach … but it was too late…and Kairo didn't care.

His top priority is the safety and happiness of the young lady of the South and that's all, it's the goal of his life, the meaning of his life itself.

 

The young guard look a last time towards the hinding passage and run toward the castle with newly hope and faith. He will survive for her, what even will be the cost too. He will not deceive her.
