14. Best Served Cold

Kikyou stood before the barrier that she could feel rather than see. She didn’t know exactly why it was that Naraku’s presence seemed to have vanished from the world for a time, but there was no mistaking the utterly venomous feeling of the shield. Regardless of the reason behind Naraku’s disappearance, he was clearly back.

She looked around at the creatures that kept her alive by supplying her with the dead souls that animated her. Although she herself could breach the barrier with relative ease, she had learned long ago that they could not. When she had been held prisoner by Naraku he had very nearly destroyed her by denying her the access to the creatures that she required to stay alive.

That she was how she had learned that some small part of Onigumo, the crippled thief that she had hidden in a cave and nursed, still existed within Naraku. Onigumo had loved her in his own twisted way, desiring to see her corrupted and belonging to him, thereby essentially reversing the purification that the Shikon no Tama had been undergoing in her care.

Fortunately, she had managed to manipulate him into releasing her. Though he could not possibly control someone with her kind of power, she had allowed him to think that he had. Since many of Naraku’s goals coincided with her own, she had chosen to work with him, at least on the surface, while manipulating events so that he would soon be destroyed.

Reaching out with her senses, she could feel the forces all converging on this place. It was, she thought, nearly time for her plans to come to fruition. Reaching out toward the barrier, she exerted her power, opening a portal in the shield. It did not matter that her creatures would not be able to come to her--once her revenge was accomplished, she would have no further need of them.

Feeling the barrier closing behind her, Kikyou headed to the west, toward the presence of Naraku that she could now feel ahead.
