Pretend You Don't See Him
Full summary: Kagome is put into therapy upon the arrival of her eighteenth birthday and her father's death. Everything begins surfacing. Her powers, her true being, and a past her family worked so hard for her to forget. And all of it occurs because of her birthday present from her late father, the legendary Shikon no Tama. [InuKag, AU]
Disclaimer: I don't Takahashi Rumiko's brilliant characters, but I do own mine and the plot of this story. Also, I claim no rights to the song appearing in later chapters, Bless the Broken Road by Rascal Flatts.
Prologue – Daddy's Little Girl
“Who next?!” Kagome yelled at the sky. “Who are you going to take next? Mama? Jii-chan? Souta? WHO?”
Falling to her knees unceremoniously, she sobbed uncontrollably. She mumbled incoherent sentences as she continued to cry into the grass, earning her odd stares from passers-by. Barely raising her head from the ground, she eyed the Goshinboku, the tree where she had been sitting when her father gave her her birthday present only two days before...
Flashback:
Kagome sat against the Goshinboku, gazing at the sky. Her father came up to her, holding a small box in his hand. It had been two days before her eighteenth birthday. Her Jii-chan protested the idea of Akira giving Kagome her present early, but he ignored the old man with sorrow dancing in his eyes.
Crouching beside his daughter, he gave Kagome the box, only saying “happy early birthday, Kags” at that point.
Upon opening the parcel, Kagome let out an audible gasp at the treasure in her hands. She knew the story behind the beautiful jewel, her father had no need to explain the importance of it to her.
In the box laid a necklace strung with shells. At the very center sat a brightly glowing purple-pink gem.
“The miko in you will finally come forth,” Akira informed her. “Another part of you unknown to even your mother and grandfather will soon become exposed as well. Protect the Shikon carefully, just as I have.”
With that, he left Kagome to be by herself with the treasured Shikon jewel. Yes, her power and magic will come forth in two days. It's a horrible thing Akira already knew he wouldn't be around to see how well she'd use them.

Okay, massively short, I know. But this is just the intro to the story. The next chapter will be a lot longer than this. I got the way to tell this plot from “Tell Me a Story” by Wolf Blossom and I don't claim that I came up with the format. It's nothing like that story, just told in the same fashion. You'll see what I mean in the next chapter.
Ja ne!
