Chapter 6

“Oh, this is not good,” one of the techs in the control room muttered.

Kagura stared at the screen intently, for the first time in many years she felt fear. An electrical storm was going to hit them. A big one, it had enough force to knock out all the power in the facility. Now they could handle being without light for a few minutes, but the security systems might go down as well.

If IY14 escaped…

“Contact Naraku, I want all experiments put on hold, until the storm passes!” Kagura ordered.

“He's not in his office, sir.”

“What?! Damn it!”

Rin stepped inside her room on The Midoriko, hit the button and the door slid shut behind her. She leaned against the door panting, feeling as if she would not be able to get enough air into her lungs ever again.

As her adrenaline rush began to cool, the horrible things she had seen in the lab came back to her, hitting her like a slap in the face.

“Who are you…?”

“Rin…”

“You must go…”

He had been sentient. This “IY14” had been intelligent; he knew exactly what was being done to him. He was in so much pain…

Her stomach turned over. She ran to the bathroom and vomited.

Where is Rin? Inuyasha thought, his eye twitching slightly in annoyance. Miroku had come back with their next assignment, and they were to leave within the hour.

Finally he caught her scent and followed it to her room. He tapped the button lightly to open the door only half-way as he had learned from painful experience not to just barge in to a girl's room.

He cautiously peaked in.

“Oi, Rin, we need….”

He stopped when the sound of sobs reached his ears. He punched the button making the door open all the way. He found Rin, fully clothed, lying on her bed, crying her eyes out. Rin was not one of those people that broke out in tears for no reason at all. In fact Inuyasha had never seen Rin cry before. Something must be really wrong.

“Rin, what's wrong?!” He ran over to her.

Rin slowly sat up, her whole body trembling. “I was…I was…”

“Did one of the soldiers hurt you?” Inuyasha growled. “If they did I'll ---“

“No, no, no! I saw terrible things! Terrible things in the labs!” She burst out with another flood of tears.

“You were in the restricted areas?! What the hell were you doing there?!” Urgency replaced the anger in Inuyasha's voice. If Rin got caught down there they would all be in danger.

“I got lost! I went down the wrong hallway!” Rin shouted between sobs. “They were torturing him! They were shocking his nervous system, to collect his venom, I don't know why. There were needles under his nails, in his back! He was conscious, the whole time he was conscious, and he could feel it! The whole time!!”

Inuyasha sighed, softening his voice. Things she had just described, were terrible to hear, and he was sure much worse to see. “Rin… I'm sorry animal testing has you so upset but....”

“HE TALKED TO ME!!” Rin screamed at him.

Inuyasha stared at her wide-eyed. Both at her outburst and at the realization that the subject she was talking about was cognitive and selfaware.

Rin lowered head. She had not meant to yell at Inuyasha, but so much anger and sorrow had been building up, the seams of logical restraint holding it in finally ruptured.

“I'm sorry; it's not your fault.” The yelling Rin had done cleared her mind from the fog of hysteria. However, it did not make her feel any better. Her thoughts drifted to the fact that though she knew the dreadful things that were being done to IY14, there was nothing she could do about it.

Except…

Kohaku was a dead man. Yes, no two ways about it, he was dead. If he had children and a home he would be writing his will right now.

And all for a cup of coffee.

It couldn't have been more than ten minutes that he was in the lounge, getting himself a caffeine fix to keep himself awake until his shift was over.

When he got back, some how someone had gone into the room and unplugged the stimulation needles from IY14's back. He thought about plugging them back in, but then the gap in impulses would be recorded on the readouts.

“What happened, Kohaku?”

Kohaku shivered at the mere thought of Naraku's soft, but undeniably threatening drawl.

“Kohaku?”

The young scientist's heart stopped as silken tones wrapped around his name, slowly strangling it. Kohaku turned around, his mind racing for an explanation as to why the needles had been removed. It had to be a good one, as his life depended on it.

“I—I just unplugged the simulation needles, Naraku….sir.”

Naraku narrowed his eyes, the voice turning low and venomous. “Why?”

For a moment Kohaku stood silent, the voice had slit his throat and he was trying frantically to heal.

“We've been doing this for hours, I was….I was afraid too many shocks might do permanent damage,” Kohaku stuttered, his heart pounding so hard against his chest he feared his ribs would break.

“And what indicated to you something was wrong?”

“His…His…vocalizations stopped after awhile, that indicated to me numbness, possible nerve damage.” Kohaku gulped.

“Hmm…” Naraku's eyes narrowed further, though this time not directed at Kohaku. He stepped toward the exam table. Kohaku quickly got out of his way and went over to stand by Kanna on the other side of the room. He never wanted to even be less than an arm's length near Naraku, if he could help it.

IY14 lay motionless on the exam table. His eyes were closed, either resting or feigning unconsciousness. Naraku stood and looked him over for a moment, then gently placed a hand on IY14's forehead.

All of the experiment's muscles tensed in response to Naraku's touch, each sinew reviling the sensory input coming from the neurons in the skin. IY14's eyes opened slightly then narrowed into slits, exuding a glare powerful enough to send shivers down the spine of anyone.

Naraku's eyebrows rose slightly. IY14 had not given him a glare of that magnitude, since IY14 had first attacked him. He thought he had long since broken that strength. IY14 was regaining some control of himself. Naraku did not like this at all, he, the scientist, was supposed to be in control. not the experiment.

Looks like he would have to teach IY14 who was in control all over again. The corners of Naraku's mouth curved upward a little at the thought.

“He seems to be responding, well.” Naraku turned his attentions back to Kohaku, but allowed his thumb to trace the half moon mark on IY14's forehead.

“I'm sorry sir…I haven't slept very well lately, I guess I'm getting a little paranoid.” Kohaku absently rubbed the back of his head.

“I see…”

“You want me to do WHAT?!” Shippou looked at Rin and Inuyasha as if they had just sprouted two extra heads. “What have you guys been smoking?!”

“Please, Shippou. Only for a few minutes,” Rin begged.

“If I hack into our employer's systems, Miroku is going to make a fur stole out of me!” the quarter-blood Kitsune snapped.

“Oh, bother Miroku, please I need to find out all I can about IY14. I need to remember him, what he went through. I owe him that much…” Rin murmured the last part.

“`He?' `Him?' What's she talkin' about Inu?” Shippou looked more confused than ever.

“They are experimenting… on someone,” Inuyasha, felt the last couple of words catch in his throat a little, as forgotten sadness tugged in the back of his mind. “Listen, Shippou, just do it, I'll handle Miroku.”

“All right…” Shippou said in that “you're going to regret this” tone.

After thirty minutes Shippou was inside the research database.

“IY14? Did you say?” Shippou turned to Rin and she nodded.

The database was huge, full of readouts, reports and even video clips.

“Click on that one.” Rin pointed to the file that indicated it had been written by the chief science officer, Naraku.

“My god….” Inuyasha whispered as he read.

“A full blooded youkai…” Shippou's jaw dropped.

“I see how it is; they're trying to claim the lost powers of the full bloods. And IY14 has to suffer for it. Monsters.” Rin clenched her jaw.

“I wonder what he looks like,” Shippou stuttered, still awe struck at what he just read. He clicked one of the video clips.

The video came on. The silver haired IY14 was gazing at the camera. He was sitting on a lab table, his hands were restrained, but he was not strapped down like he had been before. His eyes narrowed at the camera, but in an inquisitive, searching way. He was trying to figure out the strange object that was staring at him. IY14's eyes were so full of life, curious and eager to learn about the world.

Rin swallowed the lump that was rising in her throat as she remembered the dead and hollow look IY14 had when he first opened his eyes and stared at her before. It was a far cry from the lively being she saw on the screen now.

“Oh this is so exciting!” The voice of the camera person came up “He's only been awake for 3 days, but he's working at a fully adult capacity. Beautiful isn't he …”

“Hey what's that clip with Bankotsu's name on it.” Inuyasha pointed at the computer screen.

Shippou clicked it and the screen revealed Bankotsu standing directly in front of the camera. He looked tired, frustrated and just plain pissed off.

“Is it on, Jak?”

“Yeah, the red light is blinking.” Jakotsu's voice was right next to the camera.

“Okay. The scientists want me to report, to the camera, that we, the Shichinintai may have given subject IY14 an overdose of sedatives. Our medic Suikotsu and I are going to hang out with him and make sure his heart doesn't stop, or something,” Bankotsu said in a lack luster voice as if he really did not give damn whether IY14's heart stopped or not.

Bankotsu looked off in a direction beyond the camera view.“How's he doing, Sui?

The camera turned to where Suikotsu was sitting on his heels next to IY14.

As Suikotsu went over IY14's status, the camera zoomed in on IY14, who took a moment to look up at it. The face that stared into the camera now, was very different from before. No longer was there the inquisitive spark of life that sparkled in the golden orbs of the youkai, everything was hollow and dead. Hopelessness dripped from his eyes like a river of tears.

“That's not sedatives, that's a broken spirit you monsters.” Rin growled at the screen, tears of anger appearing at the corners of her eyes.

Inuyasha sat there silently with his eyes closed, clenching and unclenching his fists. Why did this scene seem so familiar?

After the video stopped, Shippou gulped and began the procedure of logging out of the system he had hacked into. The three sat in silence still overcome by what they had seen. They might have stayed that way for longer if a voice had not penetrated their stupor.

“What are you guys sitting around for?!” Sango's voice rang out. “We're going to be leaving as soon as the storm passes.”

Immediately the three got up and went to their duties in an attempt to purge the images that had been burned into their minds.
