The rumours . . . had started to fly. Whether all of them were true or not, Sesshomaru had no clue. Nor did he really care. Rumours were just that. Rumours. Even though they had to do with his father (he'd supposedly found some human wench to bed and had impregnated her after many months of rutting on her), he felt that they had no bearing on him. If they were proven true, then they were true. There wasn't anything he could do about it. It wasn't like he cared what his father did anyway.

`If he wants to shame himself, that's his business,' Sesshomaru thought as he strode through the palace's halls.

Of course, as far as his clan had been concerned, mating with a human wasn't that much of a shame. His grandfather, Rei Inu, had mated with a ningen princess to produce his fourth son, a hanyou named Hiroshi. And Hiroshi had some rather exceptional powers. Gifts that weren't bestowed upon a human or a demon. Gifts that no one could explain. If the rumours happened to be true . . . if they were true, Sesshomaru would have to keep an eye on the child. Rare gifts could either work to his advantage . . . or work against him. Either way, he had to wait and see.

`That is . . . if the rumours are true.'

As he made his way through the palace, he noticed that the servants were scurrying about, more excitedly than normal. The guards were on edge. From what he could catch from snippets of conversation, his father was returning home . . . with the human wench. Sesshomaru frowned. As far as he knew, his father had not sent word that he would be returning home any time soon. InuTaisho preferred to stay away from the castle, often thrilling in engaging in battle. Of course, the older youkai had become strange lately. Coming and going without a word to anyone. Sesshomaru shook his head and continued on his way. Nothing about his father surprised him anymore.

InuTaisho kept his gaze focused on the group of ningens before him, his expression steeled. He felt weary, tired. He'd just battled that damn dragon, Ryukotsusei, and barely managed to seal the bastard away. Now this group of ningens had arrived, demanding that he return their princess to them. He didn't intend to, of course. He knew what they'd do and he wasn't about to let it happen.

From somewhere inside the hut, two soft wails filled the night . . .
