CHAPTER 8
Hojo knew it was wrong to ditch Kagome at the movies like he did, but he knew it was best for her. `She deserves to be happy and I know Inuyasha will do that for her. I just wish I could be.' He was a popular boy and was friends with everyone, but just friends, that's all he ever was. He was known for his lechery and wandering hands but it was something he just couldn't help. It was a curse, but it was the smallest of the two he had to suffer from. His biggest curse involved his gloved, right hand. This curse had been passed down for hundreds of generations and did not appear to be ending anytime soon. His elders told him of a demon that cursed the males in their family with the wind tunnel. Underneath that glove, was a vast tunnel that sucked in everything in its path. He wore his glove to contain the wind tunnel with a spiritual incantation written on the palm.
Since it could be contained, it might not seem like a huge burden, however with each passing year, the tunnel grew bigger. It would keep growing until it eventually sucked the owner of tunnel inside. The tunnel had destroyed Hojo's father and if something was not done soon, Hojo would suffer the same fate. The only way to get rid of it would be to kill the demon that cursed the family with it, Naraku. He didn't know how he would do it, but he knew he had to try.
“Hojo, honey, I didn't know you were home yet,” his mother said from the kitchen. “You're uncle told me to tell you to meet him outside when you got home.”
“Okay mom,” He replied. His uncle was a stern old monk, yet he had been like a father figure for Hojo since his father died. He might not have been the warmest of family but he did care for him and tried to protect Hojo when he could. He had been trying to help Hojo with his wind tunnel lately, especially since it seemed to be growing very rapidly in his palm. Hojo's mother would have killed him if she found out, but his uncle was preparing Hojo for battle.
“Hello Uncle Jin,” Hojo greeted as he walked outside.
“Hello, Hojo-san. I have news for you about the demon you will be battling.”
“What kind is it this time? A fox demon? Wolf demon?”
“No Hojo-san, this is not just any battle; this is the battle.”
“You don't mean…”
“Yes, this is the battle that will either mean the end of the curse or the end of your life. Do you still want to do this?” Hojo was terrified of fighting this battle. Yet, he knew his uncle was getting weary in his old age. He, himself, was the last hope of the family defeating the curse. By the next generation, the tunnel would be so large, none of the children will live to be adults. He was scared, but he knew he had to do it.
“I am positive Uncle Jin. What is the news you bring?”
“It seems that Naraku has moved up in the vampire world. Since his leader Dracula died, he is the next in command. He will have demons and vampires after you. Your monk training and wind tunnel should beat these evils easily, but Naraku is another case. He has prepared himself after the last strike we attempted on him. He now has poisonous insects that will kill you if enough get in your tunnel. You must be wise about when you use it; it could mean the difference between your victory and your demise. I have the greatest faith in you Hojo-san.”
“I will not let you down Uncle Jin,” he bowed deeply to show his respect and sincerity. With that, he left inside to ponder this trip. He would need to travel across Tokyo to reach Naraku's castle and will need to stake the place out. It would not be a quick nor simple task. He never told his mother; he didn't want her to worry. He had to do this; he knew that there would be no true happiness in the family until the curse was gone. He wasn't just doing it for him self, he was doing it for his family and future generations to come.
After going through his scrolls and supplies, Hojo decided that he would need his rest for he would be training for combat tomorrow. He was rusty in the fighting department and felt that it couldn't hurt in achieving his goal. Hojo went to his bed and laid down, hoping a good dream could help him escape his problems. He closed his eyes against his doubts and worries. His mind began to drift as he slipped into a deep slumber.
<<<<<Hojo's dream>>>>>
Hojo seemed to be flying over a beautiful landscape in what appeared to be Feudal Japan. He was on the back of a huge demon cat with two tails yet he wasn't scared. He was wearing black and purple monk robes with his wind tunnel covered by a cloth and prayer beads instead of his usual glove. He had his arms around a beautiful woman in a black and pink outfit with her long black hair in a ponytail. He did not hold her in a perverse fashion, but in a caring and protective way. She turned her face to him and smiled. She was the most beautiful woman in the world and her chestnut eyes held only love for him. He didn't want it to end.
She leaned against his chest and said, “We will always be together Miroku, in this life and the next. I won't leave you love.” Those words were what he had wanted to his whole life but then it hit him. `Miroku? My name is Hojo.' Yet, it was as if he was only a distant conscience in the back of `miroku's' mind just watching the scene play out because he began talking and his hand began moving without him doing anything.
“I love you Sango, and will always. In so many ways…” Miroku said as he placed a hand on her thigh. `Yeah, that's so me.' Hojo thought.
“MIROKU, YOU HENTAI!!” Sango shouted as she hit him over the head. Hojo was at a loss. This Miroku in his dreams was not him, but he looked just like him and felt everything he felt. `He is a lecher just like me and he still found love. Maybe there is hope for me yet.' Hojo realized.
As if hearing his thoughts, Sango turned to face him and looked straight into his eyes. She kissed him passionately on the lips and then whispered, “Don't give up Hojo. We are meant to be. Remember…”

Hojo's eyes snapped open and he sat up with a start. He looked around and saw no one in the moonlit room. He calmed down as he realized that he was alone in his bedroom. `It was just a dream. Yet it felt so real' He touched his hand to his lips we're he still felt the sensation of the kiss. `It was just a dream, wasn't it?' He looked toward his mirror and for a split-second he could have sworn he saw the reflection of Sango sitting next to him on his bed leaning close to his face. He blinked in disbelief and she was gone. He suddenly felt a chill pass through the room and an almost inaudible whisper, “Remember…”
