Inuyasha had been racking his brain trying to make sense of what happened the night before. He wanted to convince himself that it meant nothing, for the sake of the mission. He could not become attached, especially to a girl who didn't even know about the real him. Yet, it was much easier said than done. `I do NOT like her; I do NOT like her; I do NOT like the way she smiles at me…the way she smells like jasmine and wildflowers… the way her bottom lip quivered when we almost kissed—whoa, whoa, whoa, I do NOT LIKE HER!'

He asked her out on pure instinct. He didn't want to believe it was because he had feelings for her so he kept reminding himself that she was just a mission. That excuse wasn't having the same effect as before, however. When she called him that night to invite him to dinner, he knew that he was getting to her and it was one step closer to achieving his goal. Yet, that was not the reason he really accepted the invitation. He was curious about her. He wanted to see her again, to know her better, and to be near her. This is why he found himself standing outside the shrine door at 5 o'clock for a family dinner. He was wearing black slacks and a red button down shirt with his silver hair in a low, loose braid. He knocked on the huge door and held his breath as he waited to go inside. To his surprise, Kagome answered the door and, to say the least, was not dressed to impress. She had on her cleaning clothes with her hair up in a messy bun. Some hairs had slipped from the bun, falling in waves on the sides of her face and her face was smeared with dirt. `Kami, even like this she's beautiful—Stop doing this to yourself Inuyasha.'

“Oh Kami, what time is it?! I'm so sorry Inuyasha I got so wrapped up in my chores I completely lost track of time.” She led him into the living room and offered him something to drink. He was being a complete gentleman, but the smirk never left his face. “Okay, what's so funny Inuyasha?” She asked in an annoyed tone.

“I just can't believe that you can look that good all covered in dirt, without even trying,” he answered honestly. She blushed slightly and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. `What possessed me to say that? She didn't get mad though. I'm so confused; is she just a mission …or is she more?'

“Well thank you Inuyasha, but I will still feel better after a shower. I promise I will not be long. My family will be home in a few minutes so don't even think about going upstairs, okay.”

“Keh, what would I want to go upstairs for anyway? I can be a gentleman you know.” He replied. He smiled at her and took a seat on the sofa as he waited for her family to come home. They showed up just a few minutes later. Inuyasha instantly stood up and walked over to Kagome's grandfather. Although his inu-youkai blood was not naturally civil, he had been a vampire slave long enough to know how to treat those in a position higher than he. Being the heads of the household, Keiji (also known as Ji-chan) and Kagome's mother were like his superiors. He wanted to be civil, but his demon blood was too strong for him to submit to humans as he did to his vampire superiors. He smiled and offered his hand instead.

“Hello I'm Inuyasha, Kagome's friend. Nice to meet you.” He said with a genuine smile. Keiji sized Inuyasha up and down, trying to see if he is worthy `I'm still not sure if he is good enough for Kagome, but he said friend, which I like, and he is trying to be civil' He took Inuyasha's hand in a firm, almost painful, grip. Being hanyou, he was unfazed.

“Hello Inuyasha, it's nice to meet you too. I'm Kagome's mother, Ayame, and this is her grandfather Keiji,” Ayame answered sweetly. Keiji, Souta, and Inuyasha talked while Ayame made tea for them. Souta was in awe over his sister's friend and his talks of adventures. He didn't tell enough for them to become suspicious of his demonic origins, but he did want them to know he was a man of the world and not naive as most school kids were. For some reason, he wanted them to like him. Kagome came downstairs just as Ayame came to the living room with the tea. Kagome was even more beautiful than before. She was wearing a silky white shirt that wrapped around and a black skirt that fell a few inches above her knees with her hair was in an elegant bun. Even in this conservative outfit, Kagome was a vision of loveliness. `She is just incapable of looking bad,' Inuyasha thought to himself.

“Hey Ji-chan, mom, Souta, I see you've all met Inuyasha.” Kagome said as she joined her family.

“Yes, he was just telling us about his sparring matches with his brother. Did you know that Inuyasha is a swordsman?” Keiji asked with a genuine interest. It seemed that Keiji had found a bond with Inuyasha with his knowledge of swords and ancient Japanese history. Owning a shrine, Keiji was obsessed with history, and being born in feudal Japan, Inuyasha had a pretty good recollection of the past couple hundred years.

“That's really cool Inuyasha” Kagome answered. Dinner went by surprisingly smooth and Kagome's family took an instant liking to him. Keiji was a little mad that Inuyasha did not share his interest in scrolls and purification spells, but other than that, no one had any complaints. After dinner, Kagome and Inuyasha decided to take a walk outside for a while. Keiji did not like the idea of it at first, but figured that if Kagome had to like someone, Inuyasha wasn't the worst choice.

“Whew, I made it out alive,” Inuyasha sighed when they were out of the house.
“Oh quit whining, it wasn't that bad. I think Ji-chan actually like you.” Kagome replied.
“Well, I just hope that didn't count as our date. I wanna take you out for real. No parents, no formalities, just you and me.” He said turning to face her.

“Hmmm, that doesn't sound so bad.” They walked up to the huge tree in the backyard. “This is my favorite tree of all time. It's called—”

“Goshimboku, I know. Uhh…a long time ago, I knew people who lived around this neighborhood who told me all about the history of the tree,” he lied. He couldn't tell her the real reason he knew about the tree. “Can we climb it?” He asked.

“I've always wanted to, but I'm too scared of falling. I kinda have a fear of heights.” She admitted.

“I'll keep you from falling. Come on, you can trust me. Climb on my back.” She thought for a moment and then decided to just go for it. `I don't know what he's doing to me, but for some reason, I'm not scared.' She climbed on his back and he jumped from branch to branch with amazing grace and agility. When he reached one of the highest branches, he sat back against the bark and placed her on his lap. She blushed slightly at their position but relaxed as he secured her in his arms. She leaned against his chest and gazed at the stars in the sky.

“It's amazing up here. The stars look so beautiful. It's almost like I can touch them.” She said with child-like awe.

“They're no where near as beautiful as you.” He replied. She stared at him as he inched closer toward her. Suddenly she saw the imaginary dog-ears on his head again, but when she blinked, they were still there.

“Dog ears?” She whispered as she tried to decipher if what she was seeing was real. His eyes grew wide as he realized what Kagome saw. He put his hands to his head in an attempt to cover them. “They really are dog-ears!” she said. She was stunned, but that was nothing compared to Inuyasha.

“Y-you can see them? But how?” He asked. Then she did something he didn't expect. He expected her to scream, to cower in fear, to look at him with disgust. He didn't expect her to push his hands out of the way and start rubbing his ears. The ears felt like silk under Kagome's steady strokes. He started purring contently and then suddenly realized what he was doing. He pulled his head away from her and looked down.

“I-I'm sorry Inuyasha. I should've asked. I just couldn't help it. Why didn't you tell me about this?” she asked.

“I was afraid you wouldn't accept me. I'm a hanyou. I'm half inu-youkai demon, half human. I-if you don't want to go out with me I understand.” He said with his eyes downcast.

“Inuyasha what makes you think I wouldn't want to go out with you? I have to say I would've believed it if I didn't see it, but that doesn't change how I feel about you. In fact, I think their cute.”

“You mean you're not scared?” He asked.

“Should I be? You're still Inuyasha; why should I be scared?” She asked. He just stared at her for a moment. `Could she really like me for who I am? Not even Kikyo could accept me fully as a hanyou,' he thought to himself. He leaned toward her face and brushed his lips against hers. She blushed slightly and her lips formed a small grin. He smiled and leaned his head down to her again so she could rub his ears. They laid together for a while, Kagome leaning against his chest and rubbing his ears while listening to the content rumbling in his chest.

After a while, Inuyasha noticed Kagome's breathing become heavy and even, indicating that she was asleep. He jumped out of the tree holding her bridal style and headed back to the house. Kagome's mother was sitting in the living room watching television when Inuyasha came in, still holding Kagome. She looked at him and smiled. For some reason that he could not fathom, Ayame seemed to trust him completely with her daughter. He kind of liked knowing that.

“Is it okay if I take Kagome to her room? I promise not to wake her up or mess up anything.” Inuyasha asked boldly. He knew it was a risky question, but what was the harm in asking.

“Okay, but remember, these walls are paper-thin. Ji-chan and I can hear everything and if you take advantage of my trust, Ji-chan would be on you like a mouse on cheese. I already had to talk him out of biting your head off for being out with Kagome so long.” She warned.

“Don't worry I won't; and thanks for trusting me,” Inuyasha replied. He walked up the stairs with Kagome in his arms and inside of her room. He placed her on the bed and put the covers over her. He noticed Tenseiga but did not touch it. `It's not time yet.' He thought to himself. `You're something special, Kagome. I don't know what it is about you, but I'm going to find out.'

He sat at the edge of the bed for a while, just staring at the sleeping beauty next to him. Her black locks fanned out on her pillow and her face was the picture of tranquility. Her skin was like flawless porcelain. Her cherry lips held a small smile. `Gods, she's beautiful, but it's not just that. She's caring, captivating, trusting, and she accepts me.' Inuyasha thought with a grin, `Okay, maybe she's not just a mission to me, but how do I know she cares about me at all?' At that moment, Kagome let out a low moan in her sleep. He looked at her sleeping form and placed a chaste kiss on her forehead.

“Inuyasha.” She whispered in her sleep. She was dreaming about him. He beamed at his realization. `She does care.'
