Chapter Four: Surprise ~ Part 1

Inuyasha opened the door and stepped aside as a very annoyed looking Sesshoumaru walked into the apartment. Inuyasha crossed his arms over his chest and stared at his brother. There was definitely something different about the demon this morning. Said demon was currently prowling around his living room with his hands in his pockets. Definitely not normal Sesshoumaru behavior. Sesshoumaru finally seemed to notice him standing there and scowled.

“What are you staring at Inuyasha?”

“Who are you and what have you done with the real Sesshoumaru Taisho?”

Sesshoumaru rolled his eyes. “Amusing. Where is your wench?”

“Sleeping. Why?”

“Never mind. I need the name of the P.I. you used on the Morrison Deal.”

Inuyasha nodded and dug his cell phone out of his pocket. He scrolled down his address book and found his business contacts. He didn’t really know why he kept the little group of contact numbers in his cell phone. He saw them as a sort of junk drawer. And you never know when you’ll find use for the things in your junk drawer. He found the name he was looking for and looked up at Sesshoumaru.

“Michael Keller. I remember, he’s got an office downtown. You know Sess….I could, call him for you.”

Sesshoumaru raised an eyebrow curiously. Inuyasha had been adamant in his refusal to come back to Taisho Corps., and yet…Sesshoumaru sensed that his little brother was missing some of the aspects of his old life. If he could just convince Inuyasha to return to the business, then those back stabbers wouldn’t have anything to contest…

“Get that smirk off your face Sesshoumaru. I’m just trying to help.”

“Of course Inuyasha. And your help is appreciated.” Damnit.

“Ses-”

“I thought I heard Sesshoumaru’s voice.” Kagome walked into the room and stood next to Inuyasha, who automatically wrapped an arm around her waist. Kagome smiled at him and looked back to Sesshoumaru. The demon narrowed his eyes at her. The ninjen was looking him up and down with a calculating look in her eyes. He looked at Inuyasha.

“What is she doing?”

“Hell if I know.”

Kagome continued to look him over. Finally she seemed to come to her conclusion and she smiled at the inu demon.

“You’ll do. You boys want some coffee?” She headed towards the kitchen, leaving the two men to follow. Sesshoumaru wasn’t about to let that little comment drop.

“What do you mean I’ll do? What will I do for?” Kagome rolled her eyes and huffed as if it were oh-so-obvious.

“For Rin of course. You don’t think I’d let just anyone date one of my best friends, do you?” Inuyasha dropped the muffin was about to munch on and pounced on his brother.

“Oi! That’s right. So how was your date with Rin last night?”

Sesshoumaru scowled and pushed his baka brother away. “It wasn’t a date. And we’re not dating. And how did you know about it anyway?”

This last question was obviously directed towards Kagome. She shrugged and smiled as she scooped coffee grains into a filter and turned on the coffee maker. “Rin called me yesterday and told me she was having dinner with you. Plus, Inuyasha told me.”

“If you knew, then why didn’t you tell me that I was having dinner with a nineteen year old?” Inuyasha gaped at his girl friend, eyes wide and mouth open.

“Nineteen?! Rin is nineteen?” Kagome shrugged and took a can of coffee grains out of the cabinet.

“Yeah, so?”

“So Sesshoumaru is thirty.”

“Again, I say ‘so’?” Inuyasha looked at Sesshoumaru, who shook his head. Women. Kagome rolled her eyes. Men. “So, Sesshoumaru, when are you seeing Rin again?”

“Why do you assume that I am even seeing her again?” Kagome looked at him and raised an eye brow.

“Because she’s Rin.” Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes and laughed humorlessly.

“This afternoon.”

“Why don’t the two of you come over here later? I invited Sango over for dinner tonight.” Inuyasha suddenly cursed. He looked at Kagome apologetically and smiled weakly.

“Kagome…I…I invited Miroku over for dinner…”

Kagome looked worried for a moment, and then suddenly burst out laughing. It was very rare for Sango and Miroku to be in the same place together, because when such things did happen, things tended to turn violent. For Miroku. She wiped the tears from her eyes as her laughter started to die down, though she still had a few giggles popping out.

“Oh…This…should be interesting.”

“Shippou, you want some lunch, honey?”

Shippou looked up at his aunt and shook his head. No, he didn’t want any lunch. He just wanted to sit and be quiet and not talk to anybody. She was always trying to get him to talk. He knew she meant well, but she just didn’t get it. Nobody got it. He always talked too much. His parents were dead because he talked too much. He didn’t want to talk anymore.

Rin looked down at her nephew and frowned. She wished he would say more than three words to her a day. She knew how much he was hurting, and she thought that if he would just talk to her, maybe it would help. Summer was almost over, and she was worried about Shippou starting school again. He wasn’t exactly being social at the moment, and she was afraid she would have to keep him out of school until he got better. She really didn’t need some little elementary school bully picking a fight with her nephew because Shippou wouldn’t talk to him.

“Okay sweety. You just call me if you want anything okay?” Shippou nodded and Rin went to check things out in the kitchen.

The café employed two chefs and ten waiters and waitresses. There were two shifts, each with one chef and five waitresses. Rin didn’t really need to come in everyday, but she liked being around and helping out. Everything seemed to be running smoothly in the kitchen. Jackie, the first shift cook was busy at the stove and a couple of waitresses were scurrying around her, picking up their orders.

She turned around when someone tapped her on the shoulder. Hailey stood behind her with a smile on her face that almost made Rin laugh out right.

“What is it?” Hailey shook her head and waggled her eye brows suggestively.

“Oh, not ‘it’, but ‘who’.”

“Hailey, what are you babbling about?”

“I’m babbling about tall, sexy, and silver out there asking for you.”

Rin’s eyes widened. Tall. Sexy. Silver.

“Sesshoumaru.” Hailey’s mouth dropped open before grinning widely at her friend.

That’s Sesshoumaru? Rin! You lucky bitch!” Rin looked around the kitchen to find all eyes tuned to her.

“Not so loud Hailey. Where exactly is he? Where’s Shippou?”

“At the counter and at the counter.”

Rin swept past her and walked out of the kitchen.

Sesshoumaru took a seat at the counter and watched the woman walk away. Her name tag had read ‘Hailey’ and she’d told him that she would tell Rin that he was here. A waitress came up and he ordered a glass of ice water. His nose twitched and he noticed a little kitsune sitting a couple seats down from him. He smelled to be around eight or nine years old. Sesshoumaru looked at the kit curiously. Kitsune children were notorious for talking a mile a minute, but this one…was just sitting there, staring at the counter top. The kit seemed to sense he was being stared at, and turned his head in Sesshoumaru’s direction. Wary emerald eyes gazed at him, a small frown marring his elfish face.

“What is wrong kit?”

Shippou’s eyes widened and he opened his mouth, but shut it tightly again. He’d never met an inu demon before, but even as young as he was, he could sense the power he held. The golden eyed demon was staring curiously at him, and Shippou looked back just as curious.

“I uh, see you’ve already met.” Both demons looked up with equally surprised expressions on their faces. Shippou looked curiously from his aunt to the inu demon and back to his aunt. Sesshoumaru raised an eyebrow.

“Rin?”

“Sesshoumaru this is Shippou. My nephew.” Sesshoumaru’s eye brows drew together in a confused scowl.

“Your nephew. He’s…You’re….”

“Shippou baby, this is my friend Mr. Taisho. We’re just gonna talk for a few minutes and we’ll be right back okay?”

Shippou nodded, looking back at Sesshoumaru. The little kitsune flicked his tail and looked back down at the counter. Sesshoumaru took notice of this and followed Rin. They walked to the back of the café and entered a small room with a couch, desk, and few other pieces of furniture. Sesshoumaru assumed it was Rin's personal office. He crossed his arms and leaned against the now closed door, eyes narrowed at the little ninjen sitting on the edge of her desk.

“I guess you’re a little curious about Shippou huh?”

“He is a kitsune.”

“Obviously.”

“You are human.”

Rin grinned. “Last time I checked.”

“And you are telling me that he is your nephew.”

“Um, yeah.”

“How?” Rin sighed. She’d known she would have to tell him, but that didn’t stop the little flutter in her stomach at the prospect of telling it.

“Well. His father was a kitsune, and his mother was a kitsune. His father, Taro was my adoptive brother. See, for a long time after they got married, my parents tried to have children, but nothing seemed to work for them. So, they adopted my brother, Taro, when he was a kit.” A small smile played over her lips as she said the rest. “And surprise, surprise, ten years later my mother gets pregnant with me.”

“So the kit isn’t really your nephew.” Rin jumped off the desk and crossed her arms over her chest.

“He is my nephew. He is my brother’s child. He is my family. I love that kit more than anything in this world. He is the last thing I have of my brother…” She closed her mouth and looked down. She hadn’t meant to say that. Not yet. Sesshoumaru could sense her nervousness and took a step towards her.

“Rin, what do you mean by that?” She looked up and smiled weakly. I guess now’s a good a time as ever.

“A little over a month ago, Taro and his wife Hana celebrated their eighth wedding anniversary. Taro took her to her favorite restaurant…And on their way home…” Her voice broke and she shook her head. She cleared her throat and fisted her hands at her sides. I can do this. “On their way home they were in an accident….Taro was my best friend, and I loved Hana like a sister…They were both full blooded demons, but the accident was so horrible…”

Sesshoumaru pulled the girl into his arms. Her sent was sadness and grief, and he could smell the tears building up behind her eyes. He didn’t know how to comfort this little girl in his arms; because at that moment, she was a little girl. She buried her face in his T-shirt. He could hear her breathing heavily, but she didn’t cry. He held her like that for a few moments, neither of them saying a word, and when she finally did speak, her voice was muffled against his chest.

“My parents are gone. They left me our house in their will. Taro and Hana are gone. They left me their child. Shippou is the only family I have left.” She looked up, her dark eyes solemn. “He’s my condition. Shippou doesn’t talk much since the accident. He’s too young to stay at home alone, so he pretty much goes everywhere with me. And that’s my condition. If you want to spend the remainder of your ‘vacation’ with me, then you have to spend it with Shippou too.”
