Chapter Three: Apris

A/N: Ya’ll, I’m starting to get depressed. I would really love a few reviews. As you can see, I’m not above soliciting reviews XD

Rin smoothed her dress across her knees and stared down at her hands. Her legs, linked at the ankle, hung over the edge of the counter. Sesshoumaru leaned his back against the same counter next to her. His hands were shoved in his pants pockets, his head lowered in thought. Rin rubbed her thumbs, sneaking quick glances at his profile. She couldn’t believe that she was looking at the same man. Moments ago he was kissing her senseless, holding her like he’d never let her go. And now….

She jumped, stifling a started cry when Sesshoumaru placed a hand over her fidgeting fingers. She stared at the hand for a moment. Long pale fingers, tipped with severe claws. Her breathing slowed as she remembered exactly what those fingers had just done to her. She lifted her head to meet his gaze. Golden eyes stared at her, unblinking. There was something in his gaze that made her heart ache. Rin understood what she saw. Here was a man who was used to being in control. Used to knowing exactly what to do in any situation. Until now. Until her.

“Rin…” She lowered her eyes and shook her head.

“I’m not asking you for anything Sesshoumaru. What just happened…I’m not going to say it was a mistake. Let’s just say we got carried away, and leave it at that, okay?” Sesshoumaru shook his head and pushed off from the counter, coming to stand in front of her.

“We have to talk about this.”

“No, I don’t think we do.” She slid from the counter, making him take a couple steps back. Her statement obviously surprised him. Surprise turned to confusion, and confusion turned to anger. He stepped forward and caught her arm with one hand. Rin pulled, but his grip only tightened.

“Why are you being this way?” Rin only shook her head and tried to pull free again.

“Let go of me.” Sesshoumaru growled and grabbed her other arm.

“Not until you answer me ninjen.” She stopped struggling. She raised her chin and glared up at him.

“I don’t owe you any explanations demon.”

He could smell her nervousness. It was rolling off her in waves and it made his nose twitch. So what was she playing at? He didn’t understand this ninjen. As soon as he thought he had his mind wrapped around her, she manages to set him back again. He narrowed his eyes, looking into her defiant gaze. She tried to hide from him, but he saw everything in her eyes.

“You don’t fool me Rin.” Her eyes widened, but she didn’t waver from her defiant stance.

“Why would I need to fool you?”

“Why are you being so stubborn? I refuse to believe what just happened had so little an affect on you.”

She lowered her head and closed her eyes. “Leave it Sesshoumaru.”

“I will not. Rin-” Rin’s head snapped and Sesshoumaru winced at the sudden spike in her sent. Taking advantage of his surprise, Rin jerked free from his grasp.

“I’m being selfish okay?! I’m trying to make this easier for me, and you’re not helping damnit!”

“Easier? What are you talking about?” Rin wrapped her arms around her middle and looked up at him with a sad smile.

“You’re leaving in a week. I like you Sesshoumaru, I really do. But you’re leaving in a week. At first, I thought it would be nice, fun even, to have a few dinners with you before you left town for good. But now…after what’s happened…I don’t want to get attached to you…”

Sesshoumaru stood, eyes wide and for once speechless. He had not been expecting that. He shook his head slightly.

I do not need this.

Yes you do.

Why? She’s only a ninjen. And I have business to take care of. I am not on vacation, damnit.

For all intents and purposes, you
are on vacation. There’s nothing you can do about Naraku without proof anyway. Send in your P.I. and let him get the evidence you need. Then you can take care of business. You need this though.

The day Sesshoumaru Taisho
needs a woman, is the day Hell freezes over.

I think it’s a bit chilly in here myself. Don’t think of it as needing a woman, but as needing a friend. Do you really want to spend seven days cooped up in that little apartment? Alone?

It is not that simple.

So make it that simple.

“Rin…..”

“Don’t say anything please. I’ve already made a big enough fool of myself.”

Sesshoumaru stepped closer and touched her arm. A light touch. Merely brushing his fingers against her bare skin. He lowered his voice. His tone smooth.

“It is true that I’m only here for a week, but…I would not like to spend that week alone.”

“Sesshoumaru-” Rin started to shake her head and Sesshoumaru took a step back, sliding his hands in his pockets.

“Can we not simply enjoy each other’s company for a few days?”

“I…What about your brother? I’m sure he’d like to spend time with you.”

“I see Inuyasha a fair deal as it is. Besides, he has his new wench.”

Rin looked up. Something in his voice at that last statement made her wonder. Was he really that lonely? Here was a man, who had been forced to take a leave of absence from his work, which was basically his life, and the only person he knew in this town, his brother, had a new love life that needed its own attention. Rin almost felt sorry for him. Almost. She sensed that he wouldn’t accept or appreciate any form of pity.

What could it hurt, to spend the week with him?

A lot if I do something stupid.

Like what?

Like fall in love with him.

Then make sure you don’t do that.

…………

“No physical contact.” Sesshoumaru wanted to protest, but thought better of it. He could always negotiate that bit later. Instead, he nodded slowly, keeping his eyes locked with hers.

“You have my word.” He could see her visibly relax, only to tense up once more.

“There’s….just one more thing.”

“What is it?”

“I, I don’t want to tell you now. Tonight has been hectic enough as it is.” He wanted to reach out a hand to comfort her, but remembering her request, he only tilted his head and smiled reassuringly.

“Whatever it is, you can tell me.” Rin looked down, a smile quirking the corners of her lips.

“I know. It’s nothing I’m ashamed of. I would just rather tell you tomorrow.” Sesshoumaru knew it would be best not to push her for more, and he didn’t want to start another argument.

“Fine. I didn’t see any cars in the parking lot when I arrived. Do you need a ride home?”

“Oh, no. I parked in the employee lot behind the building.”

“Very well. Good night Rin.”

“Good night Sesshoumaru.”

Sesshoumaru nodded and followed her out of the kitchen, wondering, not for the fist time, what he’d gotten himself into.

A/N: I know this is uber short, but I’m having a nasty fit of writer’s block at the moment. I promise to do better next chapter. This story is going to be shorter than Demon Day Care. Probably only 10 chapters or so. That’s mainly because I don’t have the right kind of patience to deal with a long fic, and the story would suffer if I tried to draw things out over many chapters. So, that being said, sorry again for the short chapter and R&R.
