Seven: Falling
“So, what are we doing today?”
Sesshoumaru looked up from his cup of coffee to find Rin smiling at him. She was standing behind the cafe counter, wearing a simple white T-shirt and what he knew to be a blue jean skirt that was too short for comfort. His comfort, that is. He shrugged his shoulders slightly and shook his head.
“What do normal people do on a Sunday afternoon?”
“What do you usually do?”
“Work.” He said it so matter-of-factly that Rin couldn't help but laugh.
“That’s sad.”
“That is life.”
“That’s a sad life.”
“It has worked fine for me these past thirty years.” Rin planted her hands on her hips and gave him her best just-try-and-argue-with-me stare.
“Well today, it isn’t. I've got the perfect idea for today that’ll knock your Gucci socks off.”
Sesshoumaru watched Rin bounce away, the scheming smile very evident on her pixie face. He couldn’t even guess at what was going through her mind. And he didn’t think he really wanted to on this matter. He put hit coffee cup down and looked over to find Shippou…well…staring at him.
“What?” Shippou shrugged and went back to staring at the counter.
“Nothing.”
“You do not speak very often.”
Shippou shrugged again. “Enough.”
Sesshoumaru couldn't help the stab of sympathy that shot through him for the kitsune. He remembered what it was like to lose a mother and a father, and to lose them at the same time was sure to be even harder. He didn't know what caused the little boy to be practically mute...but he didn't think it was entirely the shock of losing his parents. His eyes caught a flash of brown and he looked up to find Rin standing in from of him again. Except she was looking at Shippou, the sadness in her beautiful brown eyes completely unmasked. He caught her gaze with his golden stare and she smiled briefly.
“You guys ready to go?”
“Where are we going?” Her smiled brightened slightly.
“You’ll see.”
“I do not like surprises Rin.”
“Aw poor baby. Too bad.”

Kagome held tight to Inuyasha's waist as he sped up the shrine steps. What would have taken her at least ten minutes on her own, was being reduced to mere seconds with the help of her handy-dandy-hanyou. They reached the stop of the stone stairs and Inuyasha turned to look down the steps.
“You seriously walk up all these things every fucking Sunday?”
“Yes, but now I have a big strong hanyou to carry me up from now on.”
“Feh.” Kagome giggled and kissed the back of his head.
"Feh, yourself."
"Would you like me to drop you right now?"
"Hi mamma."
Kagome slid off Inuyasha's back and was instantly enveloped in her mother's arms. Inuyasha watched as the two women hugged and said their hellos, until Kagome finally seemed to remember that she had a boyfriend. She grabbed him by the arm and pulled him towards her mother. Mrs. Higurashi smiled briefly at him with her hand extended and Inuyasha took it, smiling as well; although a bit nervously.
'Wait...What the hell have I got to be nervous about?'
'Meeting your girlfriend's family can be...nerve wracking?'
'You seem to have forgotten just who I am.'
'No I think you've done that well enough for the both of us.'
'What?'
'Never mind. You'd better let go of her hand now, she's giving you a funny look.'
Inuyasha jerked his hand back and laughed weakly. Kagome's mother was indeed looking at him strangely, but he didn't think it was because he'd been holding her hand for too long. Her gaze roamed from the tips of his furry ears to the toes of his leather boots. If not for the scrutinizing gleam in her eyes, he would have sworn the woman was checking him out. Before he could make heads or tales of it however, her eyes softened and she was smiling warmly at him.
"It's nice to finally meet you Inuyasha." Inuyasha blushed slightly, shrugging his shoulders.
"Thank you ma'am, it's nice to meet you too. Thank you for inviting me, by the way."
"Oh of course. It's not every day my daughter lets some man move in with her after all." A very red faced, wide eyed Inuyasha took a step back.
"I..uh..uh..."
"Mamma!"
"What did I say?" When neither could answer, she shrugged and turned towards the house. "Anyway, grandpa and Souta are waiting inside. They can't wait to meet you Inuyasha."
Inuyasha looked at Kagome with wide eyes and twitching ears. She shook her head and smiled nervously as she pulled him towards the house after her mother. Inuyasha watched the ever nearing house with absolute dread.
'I'm walking into the lion's den.'
'You're walking into hell.'
'Goddamnit.'

After leaving the cafe, Rin had given him directions to a sporting goods store. He and Shippou had waited in the car for twenty minutes while Rin dashed in and when she came back she was carrying three boxes. Now they stood at the entrance to a very large park, complete with its own skater's trail. Sesshoumaru crossed his arms and shook his head firmly, refusing the box that Rin was offering him.
"No."
"Please."
"No."
"But it'll be fun."
"Rin, if I wanted to roll around like a jackass, I would let Inuyasha do it for me." Rin huffed.
"Oh come on Sesshoumaru, where's your sense of adventure?"
"Beneath my feet, where it will remain."
Rin lowered her gaze to the box in her hands and shrugged her shoulders slightly.
"Oh, I get it. It's alright, we can do something else." Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes.
"What do you mean 'Oh, I get it'?"
"Nothing. It's just, I understand that you're afraid, and we can find something else to do."
"I am not afraid."
Rin smiled, her pixie face lighting up. She held the box out to him. "Then prove it."
"You little..."
"Yes, yes, I know."
Sesshoumaru took the box from her and sat down on a park bench. He took off the lid and pulled out a pair of black roller blades. Size ten. He looked at the skates then back at Rin.
"You will pay for this, Rin." Rin just rolled her eyes and sat down next to Shippou to put her own skates on.
"I'm sure."
"Do not mock me woman."
"I wouldn't dream of it Mr. Taisho."

Kagome squealed when Souta grabbed her in a tight hug, picking her up off the ground as he squeezed the air from her lungs.
"Put me down you little freak!" She squealed again when he suddenly dropped her on the living room couch. Kagome sat up and glared dejectedly at him while he smirked and walked over to Inuyasha, surprising the demon by throwing an arm around his shoulders and giving him one of those 'manly' hugs.
"So you're Inuyasha huh?"
"Keh. I mean, yeah."
Kagome, too comfortable to get up, reclined against the arm of the couch, sitting cross legged on the cushions.
"Souta be nice."
"No shit, like I'm gonna be mean to the guy taking you off our hands?" Mrs. Higurashi crossed her arms and glared icily at her song.
"Language young man."
"Yes ma'am. Shut up Kagome." Kagome stuck her tongue out and continued laughing at her brother. She jumped off of the couch and led Inuyasha over to where her grandfather was dozing in his favorite chair. She shook his shoulder and smiled brightly.
"Grandpa this is Inuyasha, my boyfriend." The old man shot out of his chair, pointing an accusing finger at the couple.
"Boyfriend?! But he's a demon! And...And you're too young to have a boyfriend!" Kagome planted her hands on her hips and glared at him.
"I'm quite old enough to have a boyfriend thank you! Demon or otherwise!" The old man gaped at her. He shook his head and walked into the kitchen, muttering to himself.
"Well that went well...."
Kagome gave Inuyasha a pat on the arm and they walked back to the couch where Souta and her mother were now sitting. Souta gave him a sympathetic smile.
"Don't worry about gramps Inuyasha. He's just old fashioned. And flippin crazy."
"Souta!"
"You know it's true mom."
"That doesn't mean you need to broadcast it."
"To who? Everyone in the family knows it. I'm sure even gramps knows he's a few screws loose."
"We have a guest."
"And? If Inuyasha's going to be part of this family, I'm sure he would like to know the sane from the insane."
"WHAT?!"
"Holy shit, look at Kagome's face mom! She looks like a chili pepper! And Inuyasha's not much better."
Mrs. Higurashi pinched the bridge of her nose and stood up from the couch.
"Souta go to your room please; I think you've caused enough damage for one day don’t you?"
"What? What'd I say?" Yet the withering glare his mother sent him was enough to have him marching upstairs towards his room. "Damnit."
Mrs. Higurashi looked at her eldest child with raised brows and a speculative, and almost demanding, look in her eyes.
"Well?"
"Well what mom?"
Mrs. Higurashi crossed her arms. "Are you pregnant?"
Both Kagome and Inuyasha were shocked at the unexpected question. Inuyasha looked at Kagome almost expectantly. Kagome would have thought it cute, if she wasn't so busy glaring murderously at her mother.
"For the love of-! No I'm not pregnant."
"Then I don’t see any reason for you to have a man move into your apartment. Try to be reasonable Kagome. You're just too young to-"
"Oh my God! You are unbelievable, you know that?" Inuyasha fidgeted uncomfortably where he stood. He cleared his throat, drawing his girlfriend's attention to him.
"Uh, Kagome? I think I should maybe wait outside...Um..In the car...Until you're done visiting with your family..."
"Actually...I think I've had my fill of 'family time'. Let's go home."
"Kagome! I'm only concerned for your well being. You and Inuyasha have known each other a week. That's just too short of a time for you to move in together."
"That's not your decision mother."
"That's right. I am your mother, and as such I should have a little say in what goes on in my child's life."
"Well I'm not a child anymore, and you've had your little say. I'm going home now." She took Inuyasha's hand and looked back at her mother. "We're going home now."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rin glided down the smooth cement path, keeping her eyes on the small form speeding ahead of her. She smiled. This was the first time Shippou had even looked at a pair of roller blades since the accident. It seemed as though he rejected anything that would give him pleasure. Poor kid. She had no idea what was going on inside that head of his. She'd pay a fortune to find out though. A small grunt from beside her made Rin look over at Sesshoumaru and she couldn't stop the bemused look cross her face. The poor guy looked like he would fall over with the slightest breeze.
"Hey are you alright over there?" Sesshoumaru instantly straightened, as much as he possibly could given the circumstances, and nodded stiffly.
"Of course I am."
"You sure? You look a little wobbly."
"I am fine."
"Oohkay. Having fun yet?"
"Hn."
Sesshoumaru begged her mentally to stop talking. It was taking all of his concentration to keep from making a fool of himself on these damned roller skates. How anyone kept their balance on the things eluded him. He looked ahead to find Shippou way ahead of them, and Rin...Well Rin was skating circles around him. Literally. The wench was actually giggling as she skated around him.
"Don't worry, everyone's a little shaky their first time. You'll get the hang of it."
Sesshoumaru growled under his breath and focused on the path ahead. Though it didn't help that Rin was circling him, periodically blurring his vision.
"You are quite distracting Rin."
"You know...A lot of guys say that. I wonder why?"
"Could it possibly be because your mouth never stills?" Rin giggled and continued her orbit around him.
"Ooh he's got jokes."
"I was not joking."
"Pfft."
"Rin."
"Hmm?"
"Shut the hell up."
Rin was so dumbstruck that she actually put down the break on her left roller skate, coming to a complete stop in the middle of the path. Of course this wasn't the smartest of moves on her part, because Sesshoumaru was forced to swerve around her, or at least try to swerve around her. What he actually ended up doing was catching the toe of his left skate on the heel of his right skate and land flat on his back in the bank of grass on the edge of the cement path.
'Why me?'
"Sesshoumaru!" Rin fell to her knees beside him, her eyes wide.
"What?"
"That was awesome!"
Sesshoumaru groaned and fell backwards again.
"You are insane."
"Oh I doubt you're hurt. What's the point in being a demon if a little fall hurts you?" Sesshoumaru thought about it for a second and nodded.
"Point." Rin laughed, finding the entire situation quite hilarious. She leaned down, still laughing, and picked a blade of grass from his hair.
"You can get up now."
"Not quite yet."
Before she knew what was happening, Shesshoumaru's arms snaked around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. His head leaned forward and all she could do was close her eyes when his lips captured hers in a slow, demanding kiss. Her traitorous body responded instantly. Her hands slid into his hair, fisting loosely in the silky lockes. The arms around her waist tightened and pulled her body higher so that her hips fit easily on top of his. The thought that they were in a public park flitted through Rin's mind, but was instantly forgotten when Sesshoumaru's hands slid lower, his fingertips sliding under the waistband of her skirt, kneading the soft flesh just below the hem. Rin gasped when his fingers moved lower and Sesshoumaru took the opportunity to thrust his tongue into her mouth. The only thing Rin was aware of was his mouth, his hands, and the constant ringing in her ears.
'Wait...Where's that ringing coming from?'
Sesshoumaru growled when Rin broke the kiss and pulled away from him. He sat up and looked at her, wondering what had caused her to pull away. And then he noticed the insistent ringing coming from his hip. He cast Rin an apologetic look and reached for his cell phone.
"Taisho."
"Mr. Taisho this is Michael Keller."
Sesshoumaru watched as Rin got to her feet and walked/rolled out of the grass and back onto the path. She shrugged her shoulders once and set out to find Shippou, leaving him there in the grass with his cell phone. Damnit.
"Mr. Keller, this is not a good time to speak."
"Are you sure? I uncovered something that I think you'll find pretty interesting."
"...Call me tomorrow."
"Alright."
Sesshoumaru snapped his phone closed and put it back in the hip holster. Glaring at the skates on his feet, he reached down and began yanking angrily at the plastic buckles keeping them on. His thoughts kept returning to Rin. He was pretty positive that he was in love with the little pixie. Now just how he went about telling her that...was beyond him. He was one of the most feared, most respected men, among humans and demons alike, in the world of corporate living....and yet the idea of telling one little ningen how he felt about her....And Shippou...Sesshoumaru had never thought about having children of his own. Of course, he always knew that he was expected to produce an heir to the Taisho estate...But there was something about the little kitsune he found endearing.
'God is this how Inuyasha felt?'
'I told you that girl would be trouble.'
'This isn't fair. I do not have time to fall in love right now.'
'So make time. Besides, Michael Keller called remember? He may have useful information.'
'True...'
'You're afraid to tell Rin your feelings.'
'..........'
He shook his head and kicked off the last skate. Finally free of the death contraptions, he stood up just as Rin came skating back with Shippou tailing behind her.
"Hungry? Me and Shippou were thinkin' about getting something to eat."
"That...Sounds like a good idea." Rin smiled.
"Great."
"...Great."
A/N: I've actually been working on this chapter the last few weeks. I have the habit of writing all the diologue first, and then going back and filling everything in. It gets a little confusing, especially with long chapters. Anyway...Sorry for the delay..which I'm sure you're used to by now, and I hope you enjoy! I know there was a lot of Inuyasha/Kagome stuff in here, but their story's not exactly done yet, if you know what I mean. Yeah, you know what I mean. And for all of you who will probably want to flame me for not making Kagome's mom the typical 'oh honey go ahead and screw the hunky hanyou, I don't mind', get over it. I think I made her pretty realistic. Okay, I'm done ranting. Hopefully the next chapter will be up faster than this one. ONE MORE THING: I apologize for Sesshy's OOC'ness, I have no idea how to blend cold hearted bastard with Romance, and for all of you authors out there who can, you have much respect from me. L8er bunnehs ^.^
“So, what are we doing today?”
Sesshoumaru looked up from his cup of coffee to find Rin smiling at him. She was standing behind the cafe counter, wearing a simple white T-shirt and what he knew to be a blue jean skirt that was too short for comfort. His comfort, that is. He shrugged his shoulders slightly and shook his head.
“What do normal people do on a Sunday afternoon?”
“What do you usually do?”
“Work.” He said it so matter-of-factly that Rin couldn't help but laugh.
“That’s sad.”
“That is life.”
“That’s a sad life.”
“It has worked fine for me these past thirty years.” Rin planted her hands on her hips and gave him her best just-try-and-argue-with-me stare.
“Well today, it isn’t. I've got the perfect idea for today that’ll knock your Gucci socks off.”
Sesshoumaru watched Rin bounce away, the scheming smile very evident on her pixie face. He couldn’t even guess at what was going through her mind. And he didn’t think he really wanted to on this matter. He put hit coffee cup down and looked over to find Shippou…well…staring at him.
Rin glided down the smooth cement path, keeping her eyes on the small form speeding ahead of her. She smiled. This was the first time Shippou had even looked at a pair of roller blades since the accident. It seemed as though he rejected anything that would give him pleasure. Poor kid. She had no idea what was going on inside that head of his. She'd pay a fortune to find out though. A small grunt from beside her made Rin look over at Sesshoumaru and she couldn't stop the bemused look cross her face. The poor guy looked like he would fall over with the slightest breeze.
"Of course I am."
"You sure? You look a little wobbly."
"I am fine."
"Oohkay. Having fun yet?"
"Hn."
Sesshoumaru begged her mentally to stop talking. It was taking all of his concentration to keep from making a fool of himself on these damned roller skates. How anyone kept their balance on the things eluded him. He looked ahead to find Shippou way ahead of them, and Rin...Well Rin was skating circles around him. Literally. The wench was actually giggling as she skated around him.
"Don't worry, everyone's a little shaky their first time. You'll get the hang of it."
Sesshoumaru growled under his breath and focused on the path ahead. Though it didn't help that Rin was circling him, periodically blurring his vision.
"You are quite distracting Rin."
"You know...A lot of guys say that. I wonder why?"
"Could it possibly be because your mouth never stills?" Rin giggled and continued her orbit around him.
"Ooh he's got jokes."
"I was not joking."
"Pfft."
"Rin."
"Hmm?"
"Shut the hell up."
Rin was so dumbstruck that she actually put down the break on her left roller skate, coming to a complete stop in the middle of the path. Of course this wasn't the smartest of moves on her part, because Sesshoumaru was forced to swerve around her, or at least try to swerve around her. What he actually ended up doing was catching the toe of his left skate on the heel of his right skate and land flat on his back in the bank of grass on the edge of the cement path.
Sesshoumaru watched as Rin got to her feet and walked/rolled out of the grass and back onto the path. She shrugged her shoulders once and set out to find Shippou, leaving him there in the grass with his cell phone. Damnit.
"Mr. Keller, this is not a good time to speak."
"Are you sure? I uncovered something that I think you'll find pretty interesting."
"...Call me tomorrow."
"Alright."
Sesshoumaru snapped his phone closed and put it back in the hip holster. Glaring at the skates on his feet, he reached down and began yanking angrily at the plastic buckles keeping them on. His thoughts kept returning to Rin. He was pretty positive that he was in love with the little pixie. Now just how he went about telling her that...was beyond him. He was one of the most feared, most respected men, among humans and demons alike, in the world of corporate living....and yet the idea of telling one little ningen how he felt about her....And Shippou...Sesshoumaru had never thought about having children of his own. Of course, he always knew that he was expected to produce an heir to the Taisho estate...But there was something about the little kitsune he found endearing.
'God is this how Inuyasha felt?'
'I told you that girl would be trouble.'
'This isn't fair. I do not have time to fall in love right now.'
'So make time. Besides, Michael Keller called remember? He may have useful information.'
'True...'
'You're afraid to tell Rin your feelings.'
'..........'
He shook his head and kicked off the last skate. Finally free of the death contraptions, he stood up just as Rin came skating back with Shippou tailing behind her.
"Hungry? Me and Shippou were thinkin' about getting something to eat."
"That...Sounds like a good idea." Rin smiled.
"Great."
"...Great."
A/N: I've actually been working on this chapter the last few weeks. I have the habit of writing all the diologue first, and then going back and filling everything in. It gets a little confusing, especially with long chapters. Anyway...Sorry for the delay..which I'm sure you're used to by now, and I hope you enjoy! I know there was a lot of Inuyasha/Kagome stuff in here, but their story's not exactly done yet, if you know what I mean. Yeah, you know what I mean. And for all of you who will probably want to flame me for not making Kagome's mom the typical 'oh honey go ahead and screw the hunky hanyou, I don't mind', get over it. I think I made her pretty realistic. Okay, I'm done ranting. Hopefully the next chapter will be up faster than this one. ONE MORE THING: I apologize for Sesshy's OOC'ness, I have no idea how to blend cold hearted bastard with Romance, and for all of you authors out there who can, you have much respect from me. L8er bunnehs ^.^
