Chapter Eight: Late Night Musings
After leaving the park, to Sesshoumaru’s immense relief, the odd trio went back to the Western Lands Café for lunch. They chose a table on the sunny side of the outside patio. Rin smiled as their waitress walked up; a new girl named Mylie that she had just recently hired. Mylie smiled hesitantly at the group, nervous to be waiting on the boss for the first time.
“Hello. I’m Mylie; I’ll be your waitress this afternoon. Can I get your guys anything to drink before you order?” She glanced briefly at her boss, looking for a reaction to the rehearsed lines. Her eyes strayed to Sesshoumaru and lingered just a bit too long.
“Ice water.” Rin couldn’t help but chuckle at Sesshoumaru’s rather lukewarm reply. He didn’t even glance at Mylie as he spoke. Rin smiled warmly at the poor girl. She looked even more nervous than before.
“Don’t mind him Mylie, he’s just hungry. I’ll have an iced tea. Shippou?”
Shippou, who had been silent thus far, shrugged his shoulders. Sesshoumaru caught the kitsune’s eye and raised an eyebrow. Rin didn’t miss the gesture directed at her nephew and watched intently for Shippou’s reaction. Tilting his chin slightly, Shippou shifted his gaze from Sesshoumaru to Mylie.
“Can I have a Coke please?” Before Mylie could respond with so much as a smile, Shippou’s eyes were lowered to the table. Sesshoumaru also averted his gaze, though in a less obvious manner.
Rin breathed a sighed of relief as Mylie wrote down Shippou’s drink order.
“Thanks Mylie. Give us a few minutes to decide about lunch?”
“Of course. I’ll be back in a few.” She smiled, less nervously Rin noted, and set three menus on the table before leaving.
As Rin picked up her menu, her gaze locked with Sesshoumaru’s and she mouthed the words ‘thank you’. She got a slight nod in reply and left it at that.
“So Sesshoumaru, what do you feel like? Wait. I know. Chicken, right?” Sesshoumaru pushed his unopened menu to the middle of the table and looked at her.
“Rin, one day that smart mouth of yours is going to get you into trouble.” Rin didn’t care that his statement held no amusement what so ever. She smiled broadly .
“Yeah, but I’m right aren’t I?”
Sesshoumaru shrugged slightly. “I have simple tastes.”
“Some might mistake simple for boring.”
“They would be wrong then. Simple can be quite exciting.”
“And do you have much excitement in your life Sesshoumaru?” He let his golden gaze rest on her as he tilted his head thoughtfully.
“Would you like to add more excitement to my life Rin?”
Sesshoumaru smirked as her eyes went wide with shock and, damnit, amusement. His smirk turned into a smile as her cheeks formed a slight blush, but her eyes flickered to where Shippou sat, obviously uninterested in the adults’ banter.
Sesshoumaru brought her gaze back to his with a slight tilt of his head.
“Well?”
Rin tilted her head back and smiled mischievously.
“Sesshoumaru, if excitement is all you want, I’m sure you can give yourself all the excitement you need.”
‘You’re not getting away that easily little ningen.’ He leaned forward slightly, his eyes intense on hers.
“But it would be so much more exciting with someone to share it with. Don’t you agree?”
Her body moved on its own, and she was unconsciously leaning towards him.
“You can’t bait me. And you’re trying to break the rules.”
‘The damned no physical contact rule.’
“Rules were meant to be broken.”
Her eyes flickered for a moment and became darker.
“Not this one.”
“Not yet.”
Her breath caught briefly before exhaling in a rush. How easy it would be to break all the rules and forget everything…And how hard it would be when he left. How hard it was already going to be.
“Sesshoumaru.”
“Yes?”
Rin straightened in her chair and turned her head, breaking away from his gaze. She had spotted Mylie coming towards them and knew it was time to make her escape. ‘Coward.’
“Mylie’s coming back.” Sesshoumaru settled back in his chair and looked towards the approaching waitress boredly.
“How convenient.”
“Are you guys done flirting now? I’m kind of hungry.”
Two heads turned simultaneously towards Shippou’s chair. His face was completely somber, but his green eyes held a hint of amusement.
Rin mentally cringed at getting admonished by her eight year old nephew. She looked back at Sesshoumaru and wasn’t surprised to see the demon’s face as calm and stoic as usual. ‘Figures.’
Thankfully Mylie was at their table a moment later, taking their lunch orders.
“So that’s a club sandwich for Ms. Rin, a cheeseburger for Mr. Green Eyes, and for Mr. Sesshoumaru a-”
“Club sandwich.” Mylie smiled and jotted down their orders, thanking them before she left for the kitchen.
Rin cast a side long glance at him and smirked. “My, my, aren’t we full of surprises?”
Sesshoumaru tilted his head slightly and looked at her through lowered lids.
“More than you may think…”

Rin let out a heavy breath as she flipped through the many worthless channels of her worthless cable TV. She groaned when she came back around to the channel she started on and threw the remote on the couch cushion beside her.
“God I’m bored.”
“Me too.”
Rin looked up in surprise to see Shippou standing beside the arm of the couch, looking at her with timid green eyes. She immediately shifted her position, scooting over so that he could sit beside her. He hesitated for a moment before settling in next to her. Rin looked at her watch, the glowing digital number reading 9:08 pm.
“I guess it’s kinda late to go anywhere.”
“Yeah…” Rin tilted her head to look at the boy beside her. Not for the first time that day she noticed that Shippou was not as reclusive as he had been since his parents’ accident. She hoped that he was progressing. Looking down at her watch again, she had an idea.
“You wanna go for a drive?” Shippou looked up with curious eyes.
“Where?”
“Just a drive. Come on, it might be fun. Some fresh air will do us good.”
He bit his lip, his brow coming together in thought, and then he shrugged.
“…Okay.” Rin smiled and leaned over Shippou, ruffling his hair.
“Great, just let me get my car keys.”
She hopped off the couch and went to her bedroom to fetch the keys from the night stand while Shippou got a couple bottles of water from the fridge. Rin grabbed her jacket from the closet and called for Shippou to do the same. Even though it was almost the end of Summer, the nights could get chilly, especially riding in Rin’s open-cab Jeep.
Rin found Shippou waiting by the front door, jacket in hand, and she jangled the car keys at him with a smile. Shippou handed her one of the water bottles and tugged his jacket on. Rin unscrewed the cap of her water and took a sip as she opened the front door and walked out, her nephew trailing behind her. Once they were settled in the Jeep she smiled and nudged Shippou’s shoulder.
“This is kinda cool.”
“What?”
“Us. Going on a Sunday night drive.” Shippou shrugged his shoulders, but Rin didn’t miss the small smile tugging at his lips.
“Yeah. It is kinda cool huh?”
“Let’s get going then, yeah?”
“Yeah.”

Sesshoumaru growled at the phone in his hand. He was sitting on the couch in his living room, staring at his cell phone as if expecting it to ring any moment. He stared up at the ceiling above him, his hand tightening around the base of the phone. Damnit.
‘Just call her. You know you want to.’
‘I just saw her less than four hours ago.’
‘And you have been growling at your phone for the past three and a half hours. Call her.’
‘I will not be told what to do by the annoying voice in my head.’
‘Hey! I resent that! I am not the annoying voice in your head. I am the annoying voice in your heart.’
“This is ridiculous. Sane people do not talk to themselves.”
‘No one ever said love was rational.’
Sesshoumaru frowned in annoyance and stood abruptly.
“Damn woman! I am on the verge of losing my father’s legacy and all I am concerned with is pining after this ningen wench! Father must be rolling in his grave right now.”
He paced the living room floor, suddenly becoming incredibly livid. He could not explain the fury that was boiling the blood in his veins. The only thought in his mind was ‘Why?’ Why this girl? This woman-child. Who was she to do this to him? Him, Sesshoumaru Taisho. He was one of the most powerful youkai in the country and he was letting a ningen wench drive him crazy!
‘And she has no clue the power she has over you. It’s absolutely astonishing.’
‘God would you go away already?!’
‘Sorry, I can’t do that. You need me at the moment.’
Sesshoumaru couldn’t stop the sharp bark of laughter that escaped his mouth. He shook his head incredulously.
“What could I possibly need you for?”
‘I will keep you from making the biggest mistake of your privileged little life’
“What mistake do you think I will be making?”
‘Letting that girl slip away.’
Sesshoumaru shook his head and collapsed onto the couch with a defeated sigh. “Rin…”

‘ Sesshoumaru…’
Once again Rin’s thoughts were turned to the silver-haired youkai. She guided her dark green Jeep down the almost empty road; not many people were on the streets on a Sunday night. She found it hard not to think about the man. He was smart, sophisticated (but not boring), witty (dare she say, even funny at times), and absolutely gorgeous. He had a way of saying her name that made the hair on the back of her neck stand on end. His voice was naturally husky and deep.
Her mind skipped back to that afternoon. She couldn’t help the smile that tugged mercilessly at the corners of her lips. God he’s a good damn kisser. She licked her own lips at the memory. For a few minutes Sesshoumaru had made her forget everything. And she’d liked it. No. She’d loved it. Loved the way his body molded against hers. The way his lips moved across her skin. The way his hands slid down her body. Sesshoumaru made her forget so many things. But there was one thing that Rin would never forget. He was leaving in less than a week. And even though her heart told her that it might be too late, Rin could not allow herself to become attached to this man. It wasn’t that she was worried about getting her heart broken; well maybe a little, but if it couldn’t be helped it couldn’t be helped. No, she was worried about something far more important.
She glanced over at Shippou who was taking a sip from his water bottle and staring straight out through the wind shield. Her heart went out, as it always did, to her nephew. She knew he was thinking about his parents. How could he not be? Rin only hoped that, with time, his heart would heal; if not completely, then at least bearably. She could tell though, that Shippou was slowly starting to come around. At lunch that day he’d smiled more, talked more, and he’d actually paid attention to more than every other word being said to him. And Rin knew that at least part of Shippou’s ‘recovery’ was due to Sesshoumaru’s presence. In just two days, without meaning to, and most likely unknowingly, Sesshoumaru had taken on the role of father figure for Shippou. She would hate for Shippou to get attached to Sesshoumaru, and then have his heart broken when he’s gone.
A/N: Oh my god I am soooo sorry. This was totally supposed to be up THREE months ago, but life is just full of nasty little surprises. Surprises like my mom doing a total systems recovery on the computer without warning me first. I kinda got into a funk after an entire chapter was erased, hence the delay. ^^ But I know you’ll forgive me and keep reading this crappy story lol. L8er bunnehs
