It was close to midday when the school bells rang and the students started coming out of their classrooms, filling the hallways with noise and meaningless chatter as they made their way to the cafeteria.
-Do you think they made it?- asked a worried Eri, taking out her bento box from her backpack.
-I… think they did- replied a smiling Yuka as she pointed her finger to the classroom door, where Kagome and Ayumi stood with grins on their faces, holding a large amount of items.
-Ah! I was starting to get worried!
-Well, we almost didn't make it!- said a cheerful Kagome, placing all the stuff she was carrying on the table as she took her seat.
-Yeah, even though we sneaked out a couple of minutes earlier there was a huge crowd at the food stand, we were lucky to get the last pieces of melon bread
The girls chuckled as they settled and got ready for their lunch break.
-So, who do you think you're getting as partner for Literature class?- asked a curious Ayumi.
-No clue, just as long as it's not with that pervert Miroku everything will be fine- replied Eri.
Kagome laughed with her friends, suddenly thinking of the possibility of her being paired up Miroku. Not that she was truly worried as she knew how to defend herself in case he tried anything, but thinking it'd be too much work trying to get him to do any actual work. She had noticed he always hung out with a girl from another class and of course, with Inuyasha. It was quite difficult not to notice the guy mostly because of his silver hair, always tied in a ponytail. Some of the girls in the school had a crush on him. Kagome wondered what was it about him that was appealing to them. Sure he was goodlooking, but one can not be fooled by thinking such shallow thoughts. She wondered what his grade marks were like, if he studied a lot or if he barely passed his exams.
-…gome?
Kagome shook her head as she caught up with that last part of the sentence.
-I'm sorry were you saying?
-What's wrong Kagome? You were spacing out, is everything ok?
-You're not worried about Lit class, are you? I mean what are the chances of you getting paired up with…
-Oh, no, no it's not that, I'm sorry I was just thinking I have to do a lot once I get home.
-Oh that's right, I forgot your mom's out of town for the month, it must be tough having to do everything around the house , huh?- said Eri.
-Nah, I'm actually used to it now, since this is not the first time mom's had to go on a trip because of her job.
-Wow, you sure are adult-like Kagome
-Hahaha, well to be honest I'm lucky it's only for short periods of time, I don't think I could handle everything if it was permanent
The hour went by fast and soon it was time to get ready for the next class. Kagome left her friends and headed for the restrooms. The hallways were still busy with people coming and going from classrooms and she occasionally exchaged a few `Hello's with people from other classes; it was always a long way to the restrooms as her classroom was the furthest away. Just as she was about to reach her destination, Kagome heard someone talking; that person couldn't've picked a worse place to have a phone conversation, right outside the restrooms.
-What are you talking about?…How many times have I told you not to talk to him? Are you… what?
She stopped and peaked from around the corner, only to be greeted by a pair of angry golden eyes.
-A-ah- said Kagome, quickly turning around and rushing back to the classroom. Inuyasha stood silent, still holding his phone.
Kagome entered the room and quickly sat next to her friends.
-What happened?
-Are you ok? You look all red
-I'm fine it's just… I think I may have interrupted something- Kagome replied, still a little shocked. She wondered why it was she had reacted that way. Perhaps because she had been thinking about him and suddenly there he was. She could've just excused herself and continued her way as if nothing happened but instead she made herself look as if she had been eavesdropping on him.
The teacher entered the room and class started. Five minutes later, Inuyasha made his entrance.
-Well, good afternoon Inuyasha, I'm glad you found it in you to come and honor us with your presence- the class laughed.- Please take a seat so we can continue-
Kagome didn't know wether to look at him or just pretend nothing happened. As Inuyasha made his way to the back of the class, Kagome's eyes followed him discretely. Was he angry? She finally gathered enough courage to turn her head only to, once again, meet his angry stare (even angrier than before, she thought). Perhaps he really did think she was spying on him? Then she was going to need to set things straight and clarify that wasn't her intention, after all anyone could've walked in on him what with him standing in front of the restrooms and all. But, why was she so flustered? Her mind slowly went back to reality as the noise became louder. The teacher was assigning partners and everyone had grown anxious in expectation.
-Fujii and Goto you guys will be working Miyazawa Kenji- the class kept being as noisy as it could.
-Higurashi and…- Kagome's eyes widened in shock at the possibility of being paired up with him now. It would be too awkward and he'd probably just ignore her. She'd probably end up doing most of the work out of guilt anyway. Luckyly literature was one of the subjects she was best at. She would just have to find a way to…-Hojo- the teacher concluded. Kagome lifted her head and stared at the teacher. She sighed in relief.
-But Hojo's not here sir!- one of the classmates yelled.
-Oh!… you're right he's absent today hmm- the teacher started messing with some papers. Kagome sat straight in her seat.
-Please, say it's ok, say it doesn't matter Hojo's not here, I don't care really! Please , please…!
-Hm… ok then… Higurashi you pair up with… Inuyasha since he's the one after Hojo; you guys are going to be doing Koizumi Yakumo/Lafcadio Hearn-
Kagome sat frozen, not really knowing what to do. -So close…- she thought. Her friends watched her, throwing awkward glances at her.
The class started going back to normal after everyone had been paired up. Kagome turned around, it was obvious her partner was not going to approach her, so she took a deep breath and headed towards him. She thought of apologizing to him, either way they were going to have to see eachother's faces often, so it was better to set things straight once and for all. Finally, she stood in front of him, holding her notebook.
-Listen… I'm really sorry about earlier, I didn't mean to listen to your conversation I was just heading to the restrooms and well… I'm sorry- Kagome peaked at him.
-Yeah right- he muttered as he cleared his desk to make room for her.
-Huh?- Kagome stared at him.
-You're probably one of those crazy girls who follow me around everywhere, get a life would ya? It's not like I havent seen your type before, first you `accidentally' get on my way then you come and ask for forgiveness…-
-Forgiveness?- Kagome's eyebrow started twitching as she listened to the guy.
-You better just tell your little friends you're getting nowhere like this-
-EXCUSE ME?- everyone in the class turned around. -Who was at fault here, huh? Who chose to stand right outside the restrooms to have a phone conversation? God forbid someone needs to use them when you're having such an important conversation even though you could've gone elsewhere, right?
-Hey! You could've just gone straight in but no! You waited and hid behind the wall to stalk me!
-Stalk you? What makes you think I even like you! You're so full of yourself! You sh-
-HIGURASHI!- the teacher's voice filled the room and everyone kept quiet.- I don't know what all this is about but…-
-It's not my fault this guy over here…-
-`This guy'? I have a name you know-
-So what? You're just…-
-ENOUGH!- the teacher yelled, fixing his glasses. -You'll stay after school today and clean the classroom as punishment; and I don't want to hear another word from you unless you want to get a suspention-
Both Inuyasha and Kagome got back to their seats, muttering insults at eachother as they did. The class continued and things slowly went back to the normal silence that used to preceed that subject. As Kagome copied what the teacher had written on the blackboard, her gaze would sometimes follow the movement of her neighbour's writing hand. She had always thought men's hands were supposed to be rugged and big; Inuyasha's were definitely guy hands, tense and with a firm grip around the pen, but somehow, to her they were also delicate in some way.
-…got it at the supply store at the back of the school- Inuyasha said softly.-The pen… you've been staring at it, havent you?
-Actually, your hands… they're somewhat… doll-like in my op- Kagome woke up from her trance and realized what she was saying. Her cheeks turned a light hue of red as she stared back at the surprised guy sitting next to her. -I-I mean…-
Inuyasha let out a soft chuckle. -Listen I… I'm sorry for lashing out on you like that, I was just upset over something… anyway, since we are doing this together might as well get along right?
Kagome listened to him carefully, trying to find any trace of sarcasm in what had just been said. -… I'm sorry too, I guess I shouldn't have snapped at you like that either-
-Alright then- said a smirking Inuyasha as he went back to his writing.
She did the same, feeling slightly dissappointed with herself for having misjudged him.
A few hours later, Kagome stood in the middle of the classroom, holding a broom and looking angry. -I cant believe I actually felt bad for misjudging that jerk!-
Half an hour earlier Inuyasha had stood in front of her in the middle of the empty classroom, grin on his face as he spoke.
-Listen Kagome, since obviously I was the bigger man for apologizing first I think I should be rewarded somehow, you know?
Kagome stood there, her eyebrow raised.
-It turns out I cant stay for cleaning today, so I'll have to leave things to you, partner! I'm really sorry eh! I owe you one!- he said quickly, exiting the room.
Kagome's jaw dropped wide open at the incident. Had she just been played?
-I-I-INUYASHAAA!!!- Her voice echoed throughout the school halls.
Kagome stood in front of the class, looking at her recently finished cleaning job. She felt a little proud of herself for finishing most of it on her own, but that feeling was overpowered by the anger she felt for being cheated like that.
-That jerk!- she yelled, throwing away the towel she had been holding with her hand. She sighed and went towards one of the seats near the windows, taking off her apron before sitting. The sky was orange and had some hints of purple as the sun set in the horizon. She smiled at the sight, her eyes slowly closing while feeling a soft breeze of air caressing her cheeks.
Inuyasha walked the halls in a very slow pace, looking troubled. As he came closer to the classroom, his expression became even more awkward. How was could he face her after ditching her like that? He wanted to kick himself for forgetting his math work-book when the homework was due the next day. He didn't come unprepared though, in one of his hands he held a peace offer, a bag full of sweets from the convenience store, very popular among highschool girls. He stood still in front of the classroom door, his eyes closed. Took a deep breath and entered the room.
He was surprised to see everything on it's place, nice and clean. The guilt became even heavier as he noticed Kagome sleeping.
-Erm… Higurashi are you already done? I forgot my work-book and math is due tomorrow you know…-
No response. He carefully approached her and poked her softly on her shoulder.
-Jus fve mre mnutes ma- she sofly replied.
-Damn it...- Inuyasha turned the chair from the desk in front and sat, facing her. A few strands of hair crossed her face, tickling her nose and making her do some weird facial expressions. He chuckled at the scene. Without noticing himself, his hand was already placing the strands of hair away from her face. The sudden realization made him blush as he quickly took his hand away from her. And then he stared at the view outside. The purple sky still held a few hints of orange as the street lights begun to light up one by one.
