Chapter 2: “Nothing but curiosity”

Kagome half-opened her eyes. Her vision was still blurry, but she could see through the window that the sky had already become dark. Still feeling a little sleepy, she managed to sit up straight. Her eyes widened in surprise as the vision in front of her became clear.

Huh?

An asleep Inuyasha sat in front of her, arms crossed, mouth hanging wide open. Kagome rubbed her eyes and blinked a couple of times before completely realizing that she was not dreaming and that her eyes were not deceiving her. She sat there for a few minutes, wondering what she should do. Now that he was practically at her mercy, she could do just about anything to him as payback for having left all the cleaning to her. Markers, chalks, paint, almost everything was on hand at the moment, and she smirked as she slowly stood up, making sure her prey's sleep was not in any way disturbed. And then she noticed the plastic bag sitting on her desk. She looked at him, then at the bag. She bit her bottom lip, curious at what the contents were. She leaned over and carefully took a peak inside the bag, gasping at the sight of the many forms of candy staring at her. Then once again, her eyes turned to the sleeping guy she had in front.

Inuyasha stared at the empty seat in front of him. He had just woken up and was still a bit confused as to where he was. He remembered seeing a sleeping Kagome, but now she was gone and so was the bag of candy. Instead, he stared at the white piece of paper placed on the table.

Don't forget to turn the lights off when you leave. Thanks for the candy!

“Tsch!” Inuyasha grunted, tossing the note away. He checked his watch. “9:30!? Shit!” He went straight to his seat and got his book, then headed out of the classroom.

The next morning, Kagome and her friends stood by the window, chatting joyfully.

“I cant believe you did that, Kagome! He must have been shocked when he woke up” said Eri.

“Well, I think he deserved it. He shouldn't have left you to do the cleaning alone” Yuka said, turning her head to look at Kagome. “The bag of candy was a surprise though”

“Peace offer” Kagome replied, making a V-sign with her fingers. “I bet he wanted me to shut up by giving me those sweets; had I been awake he would've not heard the end of it”

“I would've done something else to him though, like paint his face or something” said a smiling Ayumi.

“I wanted to! God it would've been such sweet revenge but I didn't want to risk the chance of him waking up while I was in the middle of messing with his face, you know?” Kagome said, smiling back at her.

“Maybe he's a heavy sleeper; you should've just done it, that would've been awesome”

“Nah… he looks like one of those people who cant get into a deep sleep. His left eyebrow twitched everytime I made the slightest noise and you could tell his body wasn't relaxed since he stayed in the same position even when I was already at the door… what?” Kagome looked back at her now silent friends.

Eri, Yuka and Ayumi looked at eachother in surprise. Since when had she developed such observational skills? Or was it this particular boy that had caught her attention? Her friends wondered.

“Nothing!” the trio answered at the same time.

“Hey” Inuyasha's voice made them turn around. He stood before them with big dark circles around his eyes. “How was the candy?”

“How was the nap?” replied Kagome, smirking.

“You think this is funny?” he said in an angry tone while pointing at his eyes. “I stayed up until 5am trying to solve the damn math problems all because of you!”

Kagome gave one step forward and faced him. “So?”

“So?!” Inuyasha was about to reply when a hand tapped on his shoulder.

“Now now, I'd call this even wouldn't you?” Miroku said, smiling at Kagome.

“Hey mind your own busin-”

“Ok” said Kagome. “I think we can call it even; you skipped cleaning duty, I rejoice watching you flustered like this” she said, reaching her hand out.
“Fine… tsch”

Inuyasha and Kagome shook hands.

Without noticing, Miroku had already walked towards Kagome, and stood next to her putting his arm around her shoulder. “You see Inuyasha? She's a nice girl” said the smiling boy.

Inuyasha grabbed him by the collar and pushed him towards his seat. “C'mon Don Juan, you need to lend me your notes”

“Bye ladies!” Miroku said, looking back at them.

The girls watched as the boys headed for the back of the class. “Wow Kagome, I really thought you were gonna snap at him, what happened?”

“Could it be… you like him?” asked a curious Yuka.

“What? No way! I just don't want to be in a war with him all the time, it's too tiring” said an annoyed Kagome. The teacher entered the classroom and everyone headed for their places. The morninng classes were pretty much uneventful. Kagome focused her stare on the blackboard so the teacher would think she was paying attention but actually her mind was occupied on different things. Sota would come home from school earlier that day due to club activities suspention, she had to do the laundry, dinner and also more homework. She organized everything in her mind, and felt accomplished for being able to juggle everything perfectly so far. Unlike that Inuyasha, who had stayed up all night to finish a few math excersices that really werent that difficult. “…stupid” she mumbled. The guy next to her gave her an awkward look, startling her. The red spread across her cheeks pretty fast.

Soon it was lunchbreak. She asked the girls to go ahead and start eating without her, since she first had to go to the school library and look for some books for her report. It would also give her a chance to get away from the main subject that seemed to have occupied her thoughts for the last couple of days.

Once in the library, she looked through all the books listed under Koizumi Yakumo, but failed to find the one she needed. She approached the librarian with the name of the book written in a piece of paper.

“Hi, I'm looking for this book but I cant seem to find it, could you please tell me when it's going to be returned?”

“Sure!” the librarian replied. She took the card from Kagome but as soon as she read it, she gave it back to her. “Actually, the book hasn't left the library, one of the students requested it just a while ago; if you want, once he returns it I can put it on hold for you”

“Oh, that'd be great! Thank you!” replied Kagome with a smile. She was heading for the exit when she noticed a silver colored haired guy in one of the reading tables. She started walking towards him, not sure why. A smile formed on Kagome's lips as she stood by Inuyasha. He had fallen asleep while reading the book. Kagome sat next to him and carefully took the book from him “The peony lantern” she muttered.

“He-” she stopped before completing her sentence. As she put the book down, she stared at Inuyasha's sleeping form, trying to figure out what was it about him that she seemed so interested in. It wasn't like she knew him since long ago, they barely just started speaking to eachother yet somehow, ever since that first `encounter' she constantly found herslef wondering what the owner of those golden eyes was doing. Kagome took out her cellphone and took a picture of him.

Second time watching you sleep” she thought. Inuyasha started moving and she quickly put her cellphone away.

“W-whut happnd”

“You fell asleep while reading” Kagome said, handing him the book. He quickly sat up straight, surprised to see her there.

“What are you doing here?” he said, yawning.

“Came to check out the book for the report, never thought I'd find you here… sleeping”

“Hey, whose fault do you think it-”

“I know, I know” said a smiling Kagome. Inuyasha blinked. “Never thought I'd find you here”

“I study too, you know, I'm not that stupid” he said, smirking.

“I didn't mean that” said Kagome, looking at the surroundings. “I just never thought I'd see you in such a quiet place. You're usually pretty loud”

Inuyasha blushed a little and looked away.

“So, have you found anything interesting?” asked a curious Kagome.

“Not really; to be honest I barely read the first couple of pages before falling asleep”

Kagome stared at him. He started blushing again, and turned his gaze away from hers. “W-what is it?” asked an awkward Inuyasha.

“How about I take this book home, give it a read, and then select a couple of the stories; you can pick the one you like best and then we'll work with that”

“Huh? But wouldn't that be most of the work going to you?” Inuyasha looked at her confused.

“Well, just with this first part. It's really not that big a deal since they're all short stories, I can always read them to my brother before going to bed” she said smiling. “Besides, I feel like I need to take responsibility for your lack of sleep hahaha”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, just as long as you promise not to run away from this project and do your part later”

“Ok then… thanks”

“You're welcome” Kagome said, with a smile on her face. She then stood up and took the book with her. “I'll see you in class then”

Inuyasha watched as she walked away. He started wondering when was the first time he saw her, and if they had been in the same classroom since the start. He'd have to ask Miroku since he always kept track of all the girls information, but that would mean Miroku asking him why the sudden interest, if you could even call it that. He then decided against it. After all, it was a mere curiosity he felt, nothing else.
