CHAPTER 1
“Oi, Kagome!” someone called from the forest known as “Inuyasha’s forest” the voice was a familiar one, he was always there at night. For some reason or another, no one saw him in the day, but that didn’t matter to Kagome.
“Inuyasha!” she cried happily, running to the edge of the forest, she’d been heading that way anyway. How strange a coincidence. “What are you doing up there? Why don’t you come say hi down here?”
Inuyasha shook his head, “Not tonight,” he could smell the blood on her, she had cut herself sometime today, if he got too close he’d want to taste that blood, and for the little human he’d come to love, that would indeed be a bad thing.
He was a vampire, younger than some but older than most. None of the local humans had a clue, though he often enough fed on them. He’d come across Kagome one night, and had intended to feed off of her when those sparkling, strange blue eyes had landed on him.
Now, he lusted for her, and her blood, but restrained himself. One day, she’d offer her blood up to him willingly. “Oi! What’s that red thing on your shoulders?!” damn, she never wore red! Why was she wearing it tonight?!
Kagome grimaced, she didn’t like the thing, it was bulky, and rather ugly, if warm. However her grandmother had sown it for her, and she couldn’t very well show up without it. “My grandmother made it,” she grumbled hoping he wouldn’t hear her.
“Tch! And why are you bleeding?!” he demanded of her. What was up with her tonight? She looked and smelled like a sacrifice to be handed to a vampire! A vampire, like himself.
“Huh? How did you know that?” she was getting real tired of yelling up at him, but for some reason she didn’t want to gripe at him much, “My mom was slicing up some vegetables and when I was walking Sota tripped me, I fell into her knife but she only cut my shoulder a little, it will heal.”
Yeah, it’d heal but it sure as hell hurt like the devil! Her mom had apologized long and hard for it, but Kagome understood that it wasn’t really her fault, but when her arm stopped hurting she was sure as hell going to pummel Sota into the ground! Well, the wrapping was holding at least, so long as she didn’t move her arm too much it shouldn’t reopen to bleed freely as it had earlier.
“So then why are you runnin’ around my forest for at night?!” he growled, “Or running TO my forest! What are you thinking? Stupid wench, always hurtin’ herself and then runnin’ off into some other danger!”
“I’m NOT stupid Inuyasha! My mom was so worried about the cut she didn’t finish cooking until late. She wanted to head out and give my grandmother the food, but I insisted.” she stuck her tongue out at him, “I’m big enough, thank you very much.”
“Not tonight you aren’t.” Inuyasha growled, he’d have to get closer to her, she didn’t take him seriously this far away. Damn it but that blood smelled so good! Beyond that, there was some other smell clinging to her, and he didn’t really want to think about what it was... This just fucking sucked! Why tonight of all nights?
He leapt from the tree and landed right in front of her, the smell of her blood making his teeth grow and ache in his mouth. “Why not?” she asked, but most of her bravery had gone, which was Inuyasha’s intention.
“Because... There’s someone in the forest tonight, someone who would hurt you.” he growled unhappily, “It’s my brother, actually. For some reason or another he’s decided to... Hunt in my woods tonight and I’m trying to track him down but the jerk is fast as hell!” And what would he do with his brother, should he catch him? Well, he couldn’t do anything really, Sesshoumaru was far too powerful, still, it’d be nice to shout at him as much as possible.
“What are you all, then?” Kagome asked tilting her head to the side, “I can tell you aren’t human, but what are you all? I never asked before, I wonder why...”
Inuyasha almost smacked his head. Damn it! He’d been lax tonight! Usually he was ever present in her mind, keeping her off the thoughts of his lack of humanity. He knew that she thought he wasn’t human, but she didn’t have a clue as to what he was. “We’re something, alright!” he snapped, “BUT I won’t hurt you, he will.”
“Well SOMEONE has to deliver this to my grandmother’s house, I won’t let you go there because she’s a priestess an no matter WHAT you are she’ll not like you,” she stuck her tongue out at him again, “So I’m going.”
She started to walk past him but he grabbed her arm, “You’re a brave little wench, that’s for sure. Probably stupid too, here I am warning you that anyone and everyone who enters my forest tonight is in danger and you run into it without thinking!” he growled, “If you want to go, fine, but stick to the main paths, he doesn’t usually stand out in the open, so you might be alright, especially if I find him first.” he let go of her arm and she glared at him.
By whatever gods were ever worshipped, he wanted her! Something in him screamed that he must have her. That was part of what he feared, something drew his vampire to her, something he didn’t understand. Sesshoumaru was far more of a vampire than he was, and would recognize whatever it was. He would either kill Kagome, or...
He didn’t want to think along those lines, he’d be watching the main path closely tonight. Kagome was stubborn, and the best he could do was try to protect her. If he couldn’t protect her now, what was the point of ever having her?
In truth, he’d just wanted her to get a bit older. She was young now, and though he could have her, and none would frown upon it, he doubted she’d be mature enough to handle it. So he’d been hoping for just a little over a year longer, until sometime after her seventeenth birthday, and he’d do whatever he pleased with her.
“Okay,” she snapped and started walking into the woods. She didn’t know why he was making such a big deal about this, whatever he was, she was sure he could protect her. He was very strong, she’d seen him kill wolves, as disturbing as that was. In fact, that was how they’d met.
She’d been in the woods at night, actually she’d been on her way home from a walk. Sometime during the day she’d stopped for a little lunch, and had fallen asleep, when she woke up it was night, and she’d tried to get home only to find herself surrounded by wolves.
Inuyasha had killed them, one after another, all seven of the wolves that had threatened her died really quickly. It’d scared her and when she’d looked up at him, he’d scared her even worse, his eyes had been molten yellow. Frightening and they’d been on her. He’d looked shocked, she remembered, but she didn’t know why. Then he’d turned and left.
That was a strange encounter, but she figured, if he could attack, and kill seven wolves without injury, he could protect her from whatever was in this forest. She trusted him, as foolish a thing as that was.
The woods surrounded and engulfed her in a familiar way. She sighed, this place was just too beautiful at night. Her mother often told her to stay in, but she refused, she loved the night and she loved these woods.
Most of all... She winced, she’d only recently realized it herself, but most of all she loved the protector of these woods, the inhuman Inuyasha.
She sighed in despair, what was the matter with her? Inuyasha... Whatever he was, could easily find someone better than her. She was sure of it, no matter how much it hurt her, she had to face the facts. Inuyasha would want some beautiful woman, full figured and with huge breast, and damn it, she was nothing in his eyes, and she knew it...
She was startled out of her thoughts when a fallen tree limb snagged at her dress. She winced, this dress was extremely expensive! Her mother had had to go through extreme lengths to get the material, all pure snow white. Kagome had only three outfits, one was a day-to-day outfit, one was a working outfit, and the other was this, the formal outfit her mother expected her to wear during town meetings, or whenever she went in search of a husband, which was sometime in the next year.
She sighed, because her day-to-day dress had been... damaged earlier that day, she only had this one to wear to her grandmother’s home. She couldn’t very well show up in her work outfit at her house! She’d nail Kagome’s hide to the door!
So now, she was walking through the forest, with a white dress, under an ugly bulky, red hooded thing that she just couldn’t stand!
From the shadows in a near-by tree, someone was watching, someone dark and sinister. Someone, who cared nothing for humans, but did so love their blood. Interesting he thought smirking as the girl mumbled a small curse, removing her dress from the tree’s clutches. All alone in the dead of night, with a warning from Inuyasha... The fool probably doesn’t even know why the girl pulls at him so.
A cold, and wonderful desire tore through him, one he knew of well. This girl would be able to stand him. She held within her a great deal of magical energy, and her energy could purify his evil aura easily, but, she could never hope to purify him.
“I hope Grandmother likes the food... Took a long time to make.” she thought aloud with a sigh, she was the kind that liked to please, and she was imagining just then the happy look on her grandmother’s elderly face. It was a pity that the older woman now had to wear an eye-patch, but some things just could not be helped, something had happened a long time ago, something that had taken her eye-sight in just the one eye. Kagome didn’t understand what but, she guessed the past was just the past.
Maybe I should give her some flowers the thought came unbidden. She didn’t remember thinking it clearly, but the urge to gather flowers seemed so strong! Why not? It’d make her smile wouldn’t it? She nodded, it would make her grandmother smile.
There are some good flowers just west of the path here but hadn’t Inuyasha warned her to stay on the main path? It’s just a little bit to the west, what could it hurt? But, Inuyasha had said... Inuyasha didn’t think about Grandmother’s feelings, flowers would cheer her up so much, and it’s not like Inuyasha is in charge of everything I do. That was right! Why hadn’t she thought about that before?
Pleased with her new-found idea, she looked west of the path into the forest, it didn’t look very welcoming paranoid is all, the forest will never harm you. The forest wouldn’t harm her, but... It’s probably only creepy because it’s dark. Yeah! Of course, that had to be it!
Sesshoumaru smirked in dark glee as his prey fell easily into his trap. She was trying to think logically, but his presence in her mind stopped that, and she did turn and head strait for the flower patch he’d seen earlier. There he’d spill much of her blood, more than the blood that was already mixed with her scent. She looked like a precious gift, dangling inches from his hands.
Inuyasha had most likely been thinking the same thing, that virgin-sacrifice-style dress she wore, mixed with the blood and the blood-red hood over her shoulders made her look, and smell, very tempting indeed.
He ran his tongue over his fangs, a temptation he was very willing to indulge in. He’d stain that dress of hers with her own blood. Though he hadn’t decided whether or not he’d kill her yet, for the most part that’s what he did with his meals, took their blood, and their petite female bodies, then killed them. It’d keep things from getting complicated down the path, and beyond that, humans weren’t really worth the trouble of keeping alive, but this girl...
That magic of hers called to him, wanting to tame him, or for him to tame her. Her magic challenged him though she knew not of it. Of course, he knew that was coloring his vision of her, but he was male, and a male who desired blood and beauty, both of which this girl possessed, and was unconsciously offering him with the challenge. “Take me,” her blood was calling to him, “take my blood if you can, possess me and you can have it all, if not I will destroy you,” oh what a temptation she was!
And, he was hungry.
