****Chapter 4****
Kagome hobbled into her grandmother’s home, exhausted beyond anything she’d ever felt. She’d fought off both Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha’s mind control stuff, and thrown herself at a probably never-ending void. It was enough to make most break down and cry. She, however, didn’t need to cry, it would be useless in this situation.
Now, what to tell her grandmother? She didn’t want to inform the old miko that there were two vampires roaming about in the forest where she lived, one who was her friend and one who planned on killing her. However, here was the dilemma, where the hell had all the food she was supposed to bring go to?
Unfortunately her grandmother had apparently heard the commotion outside the cottage. “There are dark spirits in my wood tonight are there not?”
Kagome looked to her left to find her grandmother standing there, she looked just as ill as her mother had said she was. The woman was getting on in her years, but refused to come live with them, saying she liked her privacy, but visits would be welcome.
“Grandmother Kaede...” Kagome said sadly. “Yes, I guess there are...”
“But you’re in love with one of them, correct?” Kagome winced at the knowing look her grandmother gave her. The older woman moved forward to examine Kagome further. “Poor child, you are exhausted, you encountered these creatures then? Had to fight did you?”
“Not really,” she couldn’t fight, but her grandmother was always hopeful that Kagome would become a miko as her grandmother and her grandaunt had been. Kagome though, knew she wasn’t a fighter, and would never be able to fight off the horrible monstrous creatures that sometimes attacked. “They will be drawn too, by your power.” she remembered Kaede had once said to her.
Kaede smirked, looking down at Kagome’s filthy clothing, and her empty hands. “Then did you simply drop the food your mother had been preparing? Or perhaps you rolled down a hill.”
There was no hope for it, her grandmother was the smartest person she knew, and could see through any level of deception. She explained to her grandmother all of what had happened, from the accident in the kitchen to Miroku and Inuyasha battling it out in front of the cottage. She did keep to herself the feelings of love she had for Inuyasha, her grandmother would try and purify him if she thought there was any risk to her granddaughter’s humanity.
Kaede sat silently for a minute then pointed to the extra cot that lay relatively close to her own bed. “Sounds like you fought quite a lot. Vampire’s mind control is the most dangerous thing. You will do things without realizing why, and it’s extremely powerful, fighting their power must’ve taken a great deal of your own strength. Had you trained from the time you were a child, such powers would easily be overcome.” She sighed, “That is not the case. You will find that if you use your power it will come more easily, and the strength inside you is just out-of-shape.”
That was the last thing Kagome wanted to happen. If her powers developed and got stronger, who knew what kind of new dangers would be attracted to her? Things that wanted to eat her to taste that power... It was a frightening thought to say the least, and she didn’t want to spend the rest of her life fighting off everything that tried such a horrible thing.
“Now though, you must sleep my dear grandchild.” Kaede smiled at her, as though the horrible monstrosities that roamed the forest near her home were not bad, but good! “Tomorrow you should leave before the sun sets.”

She was running, left, then right, but her pursuer was close, very close. She had felt his breath on the back of her neck a dozen times. He was toying with her, finding her struggles amusing, but still she could not give up!
“When you close your eyes, little human, my face will be there, when you dream, I will always find you.”
The vampire’s voice filled the woods around her. How could this be? What had she done to illicit the attention of such a dangerous creature?
“Stop.” the command was clear, and powerful, for she did stop, instantly rooted to the spot. It was an unfair game he played, and she was the unwitting pawn that he played with.
An arm wrapped around her waist from behind pulling her back to a very hard masculine body. She knew who it was, she didn’t know how to get away though, and she guessed she couldn’t. Hopelessness was overwhelming her but she forced it away.
“G- Go... Away...” she spoke the words though the struggle she had endured to bring them about was very much real to her senses, where as running hadn’t pained her legs, and she hadn’t breathed heavily after stopping.
“Hm, you are indeed powerful. I knew as much before.” he moved her hair onto her right shoulder, then tilted her head to expose the left side of her neck completely. “I am going to have you, little miko, your body and your blood. Why fight the inevitable?”
Kagome‘s heart had stopped for a long moment, before the answer shot through her, pulling at a long sleeping power and tearing a path through her body to set it free. “I... DON’T WANT TO DIE!” she screamed pushing all of his power from her body and forcing herself from his dark embrace, only to land on the ground, sprawled.
She looked around quickly to see a very shocked but seemingly pleased Sesshoumaru looking down at her. “That was unexpected,” he purred at her, reaching down to grab her arm, before hauling her up before him.
Leaning forward he whispered into her ear, and the words went all the way through her, down her spine and back up again before settling in her mind. “I will have you very soon, little miko. My brother will have to find another to satisfy his wants, you will be mine, and I think I may keep you.”
Kagome shot up in her cot, a cold sweat dripping from her body, feeling just as drained as she had before lying down to sleep.
Now a fear she couldn’t fathom raced through her and increased the rate of her heartbeat madly. Standing, she went to the small window in her grandmother’s home that faced the woods. There, standing just outside of the forest was none other than Sesshoumaru, standing there, watching, his yellow eyes gleaming in the night, and his aura, powerful and cold sweeping over her entire body.
I can come in, you know that. Vampires need no invitation to invade a home. Tonight though, tonight I will leave you be. Tomorrow, you will be hunted. With those dark words forced into her head, he turned and re-entered the forest. Leaving her with shaking knees and fear in her heart.
In her bed Kaede smiled to herself. Her granddaughter’s energies had awoken her, revealing that one of the vampires in the forest was trying to reach her granddaughter through a dream, and the young girl was obviously fighting it.
Yes, her granddaughter had power indeed. She could fight these vampires, banish them if she wished, and that would force the power from the girl, making her stronger, and show her that she had no other recourse, she would be a miko. This was something Kaede had hoped for since she realized she’d give birth to no other children. Kagome’s mother had none of the families power, but Kagome did.
Now was the time for her legacy to continue, for Kagome to take on her role as the new miko, the most powerful living, most probably. Far more powerful than she herself had been, and even more powerful than her sister, kikyo had been.
She fell asleep with these pleasant thoughts skirting through her head as her granddaughter lay back down, exhausted, but afraid to go back to sleep. Kaede was certain the girl would be nurturing mature powers soon, while Kagome feared ever allowing them to come forth.
