Chapter 4

Kagome’s mother stared open-mouthed at Kagome, who, on Kikyo’s reassurance, rolled up her sleeve and showed her mother her arm.

“Oh, Kagome,” her mother wailed, close to tears. “Why?”

Kagome looked away, for the first time, ashamed. “I…I need help mom. Kikyo says-“

“I don’t care what Kikyo says!” her mother burst out furiously. Kikyo’s face turned bright red. “Kikyo’s the one who made you do that!”

“No, she-“

“Kikyo, I want you to leave.” Kagome’s mother interrupted, her voice shaking in anger.

“Mom-“

“Now.”

Kag ome watched unemotionally as Kikyo gathered her things and walked out the door, her face completely red with anger. When Kagome couldn’t see Kikyo anymore, she turned to face her mother. “She was helping me.” She said angrily. Her mother was silent, eyes welled up with tears.

“Baby,” her mom said, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. “Only you can help you now. Let’s go call a counselor and get you an appointment.”

The next day at a counselor’s office in down-town Tokyo, Kagome sat in a leathery, uncomfortable chair as the counselor asked her questions. “Kagome,” the woman said, her warm brown eyes settling softly on Kagome’s face. “Why did you harm yourself?”

Kagome was silent for a moment. “People hate me.” She said as if that was the answer. The woman nodded, as if she understood what Kagome was talking about.

“And why did you cut your wrists?”

“No one wants me to live. There’s no reason for it.” She said. “If I died tomorrow, no one would notice. No one would remember me.”

“But you didn’t do it to kill yourself.” The woman said, fake confusion plastered on her face.

Kagome nodded, but said nothing.

“Then why did you really do it, Kagome?”

“Because…”

“Why?&# 8221;

“Because, it feels good! Is that what you wanted to hear?” Kagome burst out. “It makes me happy, calms me down, makes it so I don’t have to-“
“How about we schedule another appointment for a few months from now and see how that changes.” The woman interrupted. Kagome looked at her, confused. “I’ll discuss it with your mother, and she’ll explain it to you.”

Kagome looked around at the stark grey-white walls and bustling people, with their expressionless faces and bruised bodies.

So, she thought. I have to live with a bunch of freaks for the next few months. Great. Rolling her eyes, she looked warily at a girl she passed who seemed to be crying. The girl was scarred dramatically, her whole body almost completely covered in them. She looked like one continuous scar. Her eyes were bruised, her lip and nose dripping blood, as she made her way past everyone else. No one else seemed to spare her even so much as a glance as she passed them. Kagome looked at her again, then sighed, before approaching.

“Hello. My name is Kagome. Are you okay?”

“Uh…yes, fine.” The girl replied, looking completely shocked. “Oh, how rude of me.” She said as she looked down and caught Kagome’s hand sticking out. Grasping it, she shook it softly, weakly. “I’m Rin.”

“Rin.” Kagome smiled. That’s a pretty name. How old are you?”

Rin looked even further shocked. “Uh…fifteen.”

Kagome smiled weakly, letting go of Rin’s hand. “Nice to meet you, Rin.”

The girl nodded and walked off, leaving Kagome to open the door to the room she was assigned to.

She found a pale boy with striking golden eyes and silken silver hair. His cheeks were sunken in to his face and had what looked to be once deep gashes shaped like almost triangles adorning each cheek, and a half-moon shaped scar on his forehead. He had cut marks all over his arms, legs, and neck, as well, not to mention the many others marring his face. Apparently, unlike the other “patients”, he wasn’t afraid to show his scars.

Her mother walked in behind her chattering on and on about how much better things would be when Kagome left here, how many friends she would make when she got home. Kagome ignored her and looked at the boy silently.

Silently, the boy nodded in greeting. “Sesshoumaru.” He said smoothly, as if she had asked him his name. “I’m 19.”

Kagome allowed half a smile and introduced herself. “Kagome. I’m 18.” Sesshoumaru stared at her for a few moments, before looking back down at what he had been writing when Kagome had entered the room, pretending that she never had. Suddenly, Kagome’s mother stopped talking, and she looked at Kagome and Sesshoumaru, tears glistening in her eyes. Both looked at Kagome’s mother, waiting for her to start talking again, but she just shook her head sadly and left the room.

Kagome looked at the back of her hand and listened to the thump-thump sound coming from above her head on the top bunk, where Sesshoumaru sat. He was throwing a fist-sized ball at the wall over and over again, but if it was out of boredom or something else, Kagome couldn’t tell. The ball pounded the wall again, then the sounds stopped. Kagome was curious, but didn’t move from her spot on the bottom bunk bed.

“Why?” his question caught her by surprise.

“W…why what?”

“Why’d you do it?”

“Do what?”

“Cut yourself.”

“I-“

“I mean, you’re pretty, and you seem like an okay person. What possible reason do you have to ruin your body, your life?”

These were the most words Kagome had ever heard from Sesshoumaru. She opened her mouth in silent answer, and then closed it. Her throat constricted with emotion, but she opened her mouth to try again. “I-“

The door to their room slammed open and Mrs. Lewis, their guidance counselor from the U.S. poked her plump, freckled face into the room. Her frizzy orange hair was flying all over the place. Kagome’s eyes automatically flew up to the mess of hair, and she almost sighed in relief. She wouldn’t have to explain it to him right now. “Kagome,” the woman croaked. “You’ve got a visitor.”

“Is it my mom?”

“No, ‘fraid not. It’s someone named Kick-you.”

“Kick you? You mean…Kikyo?”

“Oh, yes, sorry dear. That’s it.”

“Do I have to see her?”

“She’ll be your only guest until next week.”

Kagome groaned and slumped to her feet. She didn’t like Kikyo, but she wanted to see someone that she didn’t live with 24/7.

When she walked into the visiting room;(a lounge type room with multiple couches and comfortable looking chairs; books that were just for show, and probably had blank pages, lined the walls, to give the room a cheery affect) Kikyo smiled a flashy, fake smile and walked slowly to Kagome, probably putting on a show for the empty room.

“Why are you here?” Kagome bit out.

“I thought maybe you’d want to see me,” Kikyo said, her smile turning to a pout that she probably thought was cute.

“Yeah.” In her thoughts, Kagome added in your grave.

Kikyo smiled her smile again, and wrapped her arms around Kagome in a tight hug. Kagome didn’t return the gesture. “I was thinking maybe I could stay for lunch or take you somewhere.” Kagome stood limply as Kikyo squeezed harder and rambled on. “Can I go to your room? I wanna see what it’s like.”

“It’s pretty bare. You know, bunk bed and dressers. That’s it.”

“Bunk bed? So you got a room-mate? Let’s check her out!”

“Him.” Kagome corrected.

“Him?! Oh my god, Kagome! A guy? Seriously?!”

“Uh…yeah.”

“Is he hot?”

“This isn’t really the place to-“

“I want to meet him!”

Kikyo went around Kagome, pulling on her arm. “Where’s your room? Does everyone get boy-girl room mates?”

“Yeah. Slow down, Kikyo, you’ll pass it!” Kikyo looked back scornfully at Kagome, and rammed smack into the door that slammed open in her face.
