Chapter 9: Jin and Psy
The group set out early the next morning. By the time the sun had risen, they had reached the outskirts of the vanishing demons territory.
Miroku and Sango were riding Kirara and Chieko was on Apple with Shippo. Keiko walked with InuYasha as she told him more about the vanishing demons.
“The small ones don't really hurt anyone but they like to destroy our crops and feed off our herds. It's the bigger ones we have to worry about. Every now and then they come into the village and try to snatch someone, usually a small child.”
InuYasha listened to her without interruptions. He'd learned it was easier to defeat a demon if he knew a lot about it.
As they continued deeper into the woods, his nose picked up the scent of a demon. At first he thought it might be one of the vanishing demons Keiko was talking about, but there was something… familiar about it.
“Hello. Earth to InuYasha. You okay?”
“Huh? What?”
“You kinda dazed out for a minute there. Something wrong?” asked Keiko.
“No, it's just I smell a demon nearby.”
Keiko smiled. “Yeah I know but don't worry. It's just Jin.”
“Jin?”
“Jin!” Chieko piped up upon hearing the name. “Is he near?”
“Yeah in fact…” she took a quick step to the side as someone lunged at her from behind, missed and fell on his face. “…He's right here.” she pointed to the demon on the ground.
“Why do you even bother Jin?” Keiko asked crouching down beside him. “You know I can sense you.”
“Yeah well,” he pealed himself off the ground, “one of these days I'm gonna catch you off guard.” Now that his face was out of the dirt everyone could see who this `Jin' was.
The wind demon had bright red hair and a small white horn on top of his head. His ears were long and pointed and he had the biggest smile in the world plastered across his face. He also spoke with an Irish accent.
“JIIIIN!” yelled Chieko jumping on him. “Your back! How was your trip?”
“Well it was…”
“Sounds exciting! I'm so glad your home!” she hugged him again but as she did something began to vibrate in his shirt.
Alluva sudden whatever was vibrating burst out through Jin's collar and began zooming around Chieko's head.
“Whoa! Psy! Get back here!” said Jin reaching out for… whatever it was.
“Eeeek! Jin! Put that thing away! You know I hate bugs!”
“Ah come on Chieko,” said Keiko as `Psy' began buzzing around her instead. “Psy isn't a bug. He's a… a…”
The creature moved to Shippo…
“A flying octopus!”
Then back to Chieko…
“Eeeek! Anything with more then four legs is a bug in my book!”
Then around Miroku and Sango…
“I don't think they're legs. They're more like…”
“Tentacles?”
Psy suddenly stopped in mid-air. Everyone stared at it for a minute. Then, without warning, it let out a high-pitched squeal and sped strait toward InuYasha who…
Caught it.
The strange creature squirmed for a moment then relaxed, letting its many legs/tentacles hang limp and emitting a soft purr-like sound.
InuYasha smirked and rolled the creature over to lie on his palm.
“What is that thing?” asked Shippo climbing onto the hanyou's shoulder.
“Its name is Psy.” InuYasha replied tossing it into the air and catching it. “As to what it is…” he looked up at the wind demon and threw the creature to him. “Hey Jin! Figured this thing out yet?”
Jin caught Psy who immediately scurried back into the safety of his master's shirt. “Not yet InuYasha. Still working on that one. Long time no see.”
“Hold on.” Keiko broke in. “You two know each other?”
“Yeah. We're old friends.” Replied InuYasha.
After introducing Jin to the rest of the group, they continued on their journey with a new member. Jin dropped back to talk with InuYasha.
“InuYasha,” he whispered so that only another demon could make out what he was saying. “I need to speak with you later about Kagome.”
InuYasha looked up at his old friend. How could he possibly know who Kagome is? I haven't seen him in over sixty years. “What? How do you…?”
“Shh! I'll explain later.” The hanyou stared at the wind demon as he ran to catch up with the rest of the group.
Now I'm really confused…
