Chapter 10: Jin's Story
“Keiko-sama, would you please pass the soup?” Miroku asked. The group had stopped for lunch. They were halfway through their meal when Jin stood.
“I think I'll go get some more firewood. InuYasha would you come help me?”
InuYasha looked up from his bowl of soup. He didn't want to leave his meal, which tasted so much like ramen, where little Shippo could get his hands on it.
Jin looked at him pointedly and motioned for him to follow. InuYasha sighed and put down his bowl. Two seconds later it was being devoured by a hungry kitsune.
InuYasha followed Jin into the woods and stopped.
“Okay,” said Jin. “I take it you've already figured out that Keiko is actually Kagome?”
“Yeah, but how the heck do you know who Kagome is?”
“I don't really know who she is but I do know that she's a girl who used to travel with you on your search for the Shikon no Tama. Also, I have heard from a very reliable source that she holds the affections of a certain hanyou named InuYasha.” Jin grinned mischievously at the red-faced dog demon.
“She does not! Who told you that?” InuYasha yelled while trying to hide his blush.
Jin laughed at his friend's embarrassment. “I told myself. After seeing the way you looked at her every now and then and seeing how depressed you became when ever she went back through that well, I put two and two together and came up with four. You love her.”
“I do not!” InuYasha was blushing even harder now. “Besides, I haven't seen you in over sixty years. How is it that you were able to see me?”
“Come now, InuYasha. We were best friends for almost ten years. Did you really expect me not to keep tabs on you after we went our separate ways? Of course, I always watched from a distance but I saw you when you fell for that shrine miko, what was her name? Um… Kikyo I believe, then when she pinned you to a tree for fifty years, and I thought it was hilarious when Kagome showed up and made you “sit” like a puppy, and then…” a hand covered his mouth.
“Okay, okay, I get the point.” Said a now thoroughly embarrassed hanyou. “So you've been keeping tabs on me. That still doesn't explain how you knew Keiko was Kagome. She's not the same as she used to be. Even her sent has changed. It took me awhile to know for sure it was her. You didn't even know her.”
“Well first of all, I came here not long after she arrived so she hadn't changed much yet. Second of all we are very close to where your battle with Naraku took place. So when I met Keiko, it only made sense that she was Kagome.”
“Why didn't you tell her who she was?”
“I couldn't.” Jin stated matter-of-factly. InuYasha was beginning to become impatient with his friend.
“Why not?”
“Well, if I had told her, and she had actually believed me, she would have stopped trying to remember and simply go by what we tell her.”
“Huh?”
“InuYasha, I've had some experience with people who have lost their memories. About ten years ago I met up with a girl and…” Jin hesitated.
“And…?”
“InuYasha, you remember how I told you I'd never fall in love?”
“You fell in love with her?!” Now it was Jin's turn to blush.
“Yeah, yeah. So anyway, we planned on becoming mates but before we did she lost her memory. So naturally I told her exactly who she was and she believed me. The problem was that she stopped trying to remember. She believed that we were in love but she couldn't remember ever feeling that way. So I lost her.” Jin paused, remembering. “I didn't want that to happen to you as well. Kagome needs to remember on her own.”
InuYasha stared at his friend, trying to imagine Kagome not ever remembering the feelings they had for each other. He shuddered changed the subject. “So why didn't you send for me, at least tell me she was her so I wouldn't worry?”
“I did. I knew she'd need to have you near by in order to remember everything. The problem was getting you here without her getting suspicious. So whenever demons attacked the village, I hinted to her about you and your group. It wasn't until these vanishing demons started getting out of hand that she finally decided to head my advice.”
“Oh. Okay. So now what?”
“Now, you have to do your best to get her to remember, without telling her outright who she is. Do things you used to do, say things you used to say, anything that might spark her memory. I wouldn't be surprised if she's already remember some things since you've been here.”
InuYasha nodded.
“InuYasha! Jin! Where are you?” Keiko stepped into the woods. “There you are. What are you doing? I thought you were gathering fire wood.”
“Um… We are.” Said Jin, picking up a stick.
“Right. Well hurry up you two.” Keiko returned to camp.
Jin looked at InuYasha to find him staring at the spot Keiko had just been standing.
“Ooh… You've got it bad.” Jin snickered, waking the hanyou from his daydream.
“What? I do not! I… I…” Inuyasha stammered, blushing yet again.
“Yeah. Whatever.” Jin began picking up firewood.
