Chapter 18: Battle Grounds
InuYasha looked down at the girl in his arms. It was a picture he never thought he'd see again. Yet, there she was, peaceful, content, snuggled up right under his chin.
She'd fallen asleep about halfway through his telling of their adventures together. It was now very late. The sun had set and the full moon rested above their heads.
The young hanyou yawned. It had been a long day and he was ready to join Kagome in dreamland. Leaning back against a tree he closed his eyes, whispering softly, “Good night Kagome.”
-
Kagome awoke the next morning to the sound of birds singing. She looked around to find InuYasha washing his face in the river.
“Morning!” she called out.
Said dog demon looked up and smiled. “Morning!”
The girl joined him at the river. “So, you gonna finish telling me that story? It was getting good.”
InuYasha looked at her for a moment then asked, “Have you actually remember anything I've told you?”
“Of course! I've remembered the fights with Sesshomaru and the thunder brothers. And some stuff about Naraku. I think you telling me this stuff is really helping.”
“Are you sure you really remember the events and not just what I told you?”
“Yes! Now get on with it!” Kagome was getting frustrated with him. `Why does it matter anyway. At least I know what happened. Who cares if I actually remember it or not.'
“Sorry but the story's gonna have to wait. We've have to find the others.” The hanyou replied turning away.
“Oh… phooey.”
-
“John Jacob Jingle Himer Smith, his name is my name too. Whenever we go out the people always shout, `There goes John Jacob Jingle Himer Smith!' Nanananananana! John…”
“Can you cut that out?”
“Hmmm? Oh sorry. I guess that song is kind of annoying.”
“Yeah! Why is it that you can remember that and yet you can't even remember your own name?”
“I do remember my name! And I've remembered a lot more then that recently so *blows rasberry*!”
“Hey! That's my ear you just spit in!”
“Sorry.”
InuYasha and Kagome had been traveling for two hours now without a sign of their friends or any vanishing demons. Needless to say they were quite bored. Granted, It had given Kagome the chance to think through the stuff that InuYasha had told her last night. She was really starting to remember a lot. Of course most of it was silly stuff from her childhood, such as the song she'd been singing earlier.
Thinking of that song soon led her to another one. She tried to hold back but soon the words burst from her mouth as she began the annoying little chant.
“This is the song that never ends. It just goes on and on my friends. Some people started singing it not knowing what it was, and then they kept on singing it forever just because this is the song that never ends. It just goes on and on my…”
“Kagome…” InuYasha growled out through clenched teeth.
“Oh… The puppy doesn't like that one either?”
“What! I'm not a puppy!”
Kagome ignored him. “Alright! How `bout this one? I know a song that gets on everybody's nerves, everybody's nerves, everybody's nerves. I know a song that gets on everybody's nerves and this is how it goes: bum bum bum.”
“Kagome! Please!”
She only giggled and continued.
“I know a song that gets on everybody's nerves, everybody's nerves, everybody's nerves. I know a song that gets on everybody's nerves and this is how it… huh?”
The pair had come upon a large open area. The land was scorched black and no grass grew. At the far end the land dropped off in a shear cliff.
InuYasha recognized the place immediately. “This is…”
Kagome broke in, finishing his sentence for him.
“The battle grounds.”
