Chapter 20: Sunset

“There! All finished.” Kagome exclaimed as she tied the last wrap around InuYasha's stomach.
“Feh! This is pointless I'll be healed by morning.” The hanyou replied, reaching for his haori.
“Yeah well, you can't blame me for caring. It's my fault you got hurt. You saved my life out there… again. Thank you.”
“Feh!”
Kagome shook her head with a soft giggle. She could see a small blush growing on InuYasha's cheeks. They sat beneath a tree in a large clearing. As it was getting late, they'd decided to stay there for the night. With a large yawn, the miko plopped down at the base of the tree.
“What are you tired? I'm the one who did all the work today.”
“Yeah well I'm a pathetic human, remember.”
“You're the one who needs to remember, not me. Go to sleep.” With that he leapt up into the tree and settled down to keep watch.
Kagome looked up at him with a smile, then frowned. It's awfully lonely down her on the ground, she thought to herself. Hmm… I wonder if he'd mind if I joined him?
With that she stood and quietly began to climb the tree.
InuYasha, of course, noticed her every movement. But he pretended not to notice and waited to see how far she'd get before he had to rescue her.
Kagome tried not to look down. She really tried. Don't look down. Don't look down. She repeated to herself in her mind. But of course, in the end she did look down and began shaking as the ground, only three feet below her, appeared to be ten feet from her point of view.
InuYasha choose to wait until the last minute to sweep her up into his arms. Once they were both settled back in the tree, he glared at her with a teasing frown. “What do you think you're doing? Trying to get yourself killed?”
Kagome blushed, as much from their close proximity as his implied foolishness on her part, and ducked her head. “I was lonely.”
“Oh really?”
Her blush deepened.
“Are you lonely now?”
Shaking her head, the young miko sat up slightly to eye her surroundings, taking care not to look down. “Wow!” It was the only word she could find to describe the amazing view she received. She could see for at least ten miles in any direction and off to the west the sun was casting the most magnificent colors over the sky as it sank slowly below the horizon. “I can see why you always sit up in trees.”
“What do you mean?” InuYasha asked, not having noticed the sunset, as his eyes were currently locked on the even more dazzling sight directly in front of him.
“The view, InuYasha! It's beautiful.”
“Yeah… it is.” The hanyou replied, a dreamy look slipping into his gaze.
Kagome glanced at him and noticed his funny look. Something tells me he's not talking about the sunset. She thought, leaning back against him with a sigh. “I wish we could stay like this forever.”
InuYasha looked down at her, his dreamy look replaced by one of confusion. “Why can't we?”
“Um… because we're in a tree?” Kagome replied sarcastically.
InuYasha chuckled. “No, I mean… like this… you… me… together…” The hanyou drifted off, suddenly overcome by nervousness.
It took a moment for Kagome to comprehend just what he'd said. When she did, she slowly sat up to look at him warily. Did he just ask what I think he just asked? “InuYasha… what are you saying?”
“I… um… I guess what I'm trying to say is… will you… willyoubemine?” He ended in a rush, barely loud enough for Kagome to make out what he'd said.
Kagome took a deep breath. If he really meant what she thought he did…
“Do you… do you mean… marry you?”
InuYasha's blush deepened. “Well… um… yeah I guess…”
Kagome stared at him for a moment. Inside she felt ready to burst with joy. It was a question she'd been waiting to hear for as long as she'd known him. She wanted to smother him with kisses and hold him so tight that he couldn't breath. However, as she looked over at the blushing hanyou, she decided it wouldn't hurt to tease him for awhile. Besides, he looks cute when he's embarrassed.
“Hmm… How old am I?” she asked, tapping her chin thoughtfully.
InuYasha stared at her, mouth agape. He didn't know what he was expecting from her, but it definitely wasn't this.
“Let's see…” the girl continued on her own. “I was fifteen when I fell down the well. We spent two years looking for the jewel and I've been here for two years. That makes me… nineteen… Hmm…”
Once again she settled back against InuYasha's chest and closed her eyes. By this time, InuYasha had recovered from his shock and now look down at the half-asleep angel in his arms. She was definitely beautiful. He would have been content to watch her all night long… was it not for that lingering question in the air.
“Kagome?” he whispered.
“Hmm? What is it?” she blinked up at him.
“So, um… will you?”
Kagome smile. “If I'm still here in the morning you can take it as a yes.” With that she snuggled back down into his chest.
InuYasha smile. His yes was sealed. She wasn't going anywhere tonight.
“InuYasha?” a murmur came from his chest.
“Yeah?”
“Don't let me fall, okay?”
InuYasha tightened his arms around her. “Don't worry Kagome. I'll never let you fall.”
