Chapter Nine: Contest For His Affection

Two or three days went by before Kagome finally had a chance to spend some uninterrupted time in the feudal era. Since she hadn't yet told the adults of her family that she had regained the rest of her memories she simply told them she was going to a friend's house in Kyoto for a week or so. And that was that. The only person who really knew where she was was Souta. She'd left him with a jewel shard and instructions to come get her if there was trouble. She packed a bag and when her family was away from the house and made her way to the well. Truthfully she'd been feeling somewhat weird these last few days. She had patches of time where she wasn't quite sure of where'd she been or what she'd been doing. Souta in formed her that he had seen her riding her bike around the shrine. Something she defiantly didn't remember doing. Nonetheless down the well she went.
When she climbed out Inuyasha was there waiting for her. “Hi Kagome.”
“Hello Inuyasha, how'd you know I was coming?”
“I was near by and caught your scent.”
“Oh, well come on let's go.” Kagome started for the village.
“Kagome wait.” Inuyasha grabbed her arm. Kagome stopped. She looked at him. She looked at his hand on her arm. She looked at him again. “Sorry.” Inuyasha dropped his hand away from her. Kagome had to struggle to keep her mouth from dropping in shock. Did Inuyasha just apologize? “It's just, there's something you should know.”
“Well, spit it out.”
“Kikyou's in the village.”
“What!?”
“She showed up yesterday, said she wanted to talk to you and she wasn't leaving until she did. She's been acting…odd.” Inuyasha took Kagome's pack and they started walking.
“What do you mean odd?”
“I mean she's hasn't been as cold or cynical. She keeps following me around.”
“Probably waiting for just the right moment to plunge a knife in your back.” Kagome mumbled. “Let's go see what she wants. The sooner she's gone, the better.” They walked in silence back to the village. Kagome marveled at the change in Inuyasha. He was so subdued, so meek. It was weird and Kagome wasn't sure she liked it. When they entered the village they went straight to Kieade's hut. “Kagome!” As soon as the stepped in the door a ball of fur launched itself at Kagome.
“Shippou!” Kagome hugged him close. “I've missed you so much. Guess what?”
“What?” Asked Shippou unearthing his face from where it'd been buried in her hair.
“I brought chocolate.”
“Yeah!” Setting the excited Shippou down she dug in her pack. She pulled out about five candy bars and a handful of Hershey Kisses.
“Here you go. Share them with your friends. Save the smaller ones for your girlfriend,” she said winking. “They're called Hershey Kisses.”
“Cool.” Shippou gave Kagome one last hug then ran out off to distribute his chocolate.
“So where's the bitch?” asked Kagome as soon as he was gone.
“What?” asked Sango looking up startled.
“You know the dead woman who wants to steal my soul.”
“Oh, I don't know she ran off somewhere when Inuyasha left.
“There you are.” Said a voice behind Kagome.
“Speak of the devil. What do you want?” Kagome asked when she turned and saw it was Kikyou.
“Follow me.” Kikyou turned and walked away without waiting. Kagome followed fuming. Kikyou led her out of the village and eventually to the God Tree. She didn't speak at first. Just stood staring at the tree. She climbed up onto its massive roots and touched the spot where Inuyasha had once been pinned. “I loved him you know.” She said not looking at Kagome. “I was already dead when I pinned him to this tree. I died the moment he betrayed me.”
“But he didn't betray you.” Kagome said.
“I know that now, but I didn't know that then. Like I was saying, I loved him and he loved me. If Naraku had never interfered we'd be happily married right now. You realize that don't you?”
“No.” Kikyou turned to Kagome in surprise. “Can't you tell from the way things are now that you two just aren't meant to be? If Naraku had never come along you might be happy. I doubt that. Trapped in a loveless marriage is more likely. What you two had was merely a strong infatuation. It was a first for both of you, which is why it seemed so strong.”
“I never suspected my reincarnation would be so stupid.” Kikyou turned back to the tree. “I pinned him to a tree for fifty years. I've tried to kill Inuyasha countless times. Yet he still vowed to protect and love me. Do you really think he will choose you over me? If what we have is not love then what is it?”
“What it is Kikyou, is an misunderstanding. Inuyasha has never been in love before, so he mistook his crush on you for love. And he clings to that because who else does he have to love. Yes he's now surrounded by friends who love him, but he does not yet trust. And you can't have love without trust. And you Kikyou, you do not love Inuyasha at all. You never did.”
“And just how, little girl, do you know that?”
“I know because you wanted to change him. If you truly loved Inuyasha the way I love him then you wouldn't have insisted he become full human.”
Kikyou whirled furious that this little human child dare come and make light of her feelings. “I was a priestess, it was inconceivable that I be with a demon. It was love that Inuyasha would be willing to change his very nature for me.”
“It wasn't.” Kagome denied. “If you truly loved Inuyasha you would have said to hell with the rules, who gives a damn about anyone who disapproves and married him anyway. That's what love is, excepting that significant other for who they are, whatever faults they may or may not have. I do not see Inuyasha's bloodline as a fault. I love Inuyasha just the way he is, a gruff, tough, always ready to fight hanyou. That is something you never did and that is why you never loved him.”
“You are but a child you know nothing of love.” Kikyou said scornfully. “We shall see. I will not leave yet, and before I leave we will know who he truly loves.”
Kagome rolled her eyes. “Kiss up to him however you want Kinkyho, I won't have to do anything. And he will chose me in the end.” Kagome turned and walked away.
“What did she call me?” Kikyou wondered aloud.
