//Sesshomaru is narrating in first person//
The answer to this question, Rin, goes way back to when I was still very young. I was barely more than fifteen years old when this story begins I believe.
I was helping my mother with the order of our Clan of Inu Youkai. Together she and I would take care of the Clan while my father would patrol the Western Lands. His main priority was the whole land, leaving the Clan to mother. Sometimes he’d take me on his patrols with him, but when he didn’t take me I’d help mother.
We were re-assigning guard duty around our borders when we heard a howl from the Northern Patrol.
‘Sesshomaru-kun,’ she said. ‘Would you please go for me? I don’t really need your help right now. See what they’ve spotted.’
‘Yes Mother,’ I said.
So I proceeded to the Northern Patrol while she tended to her work. They were high on the mountain so they could see out far.
‘Sesshomaru-Sama, there are strangers approaching,’ they said.
‘Strangers?’ I asked.
‘Yes sir. They appear to be from another clan.’
I looked myself and saw the strangers in question. They were indeed Inu Youkai, but I was unsure of which Clan they were from. I was unfamiliar with the color of their hair and their style of dress.
There were five of them heading our way. A female carrying a koinu, two males and a young female. As they got closer I could smell blood… and eventually I saw that they all were wounded, save the koinu. I jumped down the mountain to the Northern Border Guards.
‘I will allow them,’ I said before they could ask. ‘I doubt they are in a state to attack us.’
‘Yes Sesshomaru-Sama.’
I waited for the wounded ones patiently. It took nearly half an hour for them to reach us in their current state. When they did I saw the severity of their wounds, how starved they were, and how dirty they’d become on their journey.
Their hair was black and their eyes were even blacker, yet they held a light of hope within them. The young girl, who was at the least a few months younger than I was different though. Her hair had white streaks, there was a red, upside down crescent moon on her forehead, and her eyes shone purple. Well, right eye, for it was the opened one. Her left eye was shut tight due to a large gash from her eyebrow to her cheek, which was still freely bleeding. Never had I ever seen a suffering creature more beautiful than she.
‘Are you the Lord of this clan?’ The older man asked.
‘I am the Sochi of Inu No Taishou,’ I replied to them.
‘Oh thank heavens,’ the woman with the koinu exclaimed.
‘Why have you come to us?’ I asked.
‘We were attacked,’ the other man said. ‘By a very powerful demon. We are all that’s left of our clan. If it wasn’t for Yatsumi here we wouldn’t have made it. She delivered the killing blow that saved us.’
He indicated the young girl as Yatsumi. Indeed her wounds were worse than the others. She just looked up at me slightly, but said nothing. She just shivered a bit. I observed the others and it was easy to see that the koinu was the one with least troubles. He was just a little dirty, but being with his mother kept him fed and nourished.
‘How long have you traveled?’ I asked.
‘Nearly a week,’ the woman said.
‘I see,’ I said. ‘You are welcome to this Clan for as long as you need. You’ll find food, shelter and protection here. My mother is excellent with medicine and healing.’
‘Oh bless you young one,’ the woman said.
I then led them to Mother. I let them tell their tale and she agreed with my accepting them into our Clan for their needs. She took them to the mountain stream to bathe and to heal them, leaving me to finish up the work she left behind.
By the time they returned from the stream I had already prepared food for them. My mother’s healing had done wonders to them. You could hardly tell they had been near death moments ago. There wasn’t a scratch to be seen on neither the woman nor the men. Yatsumi, however, still bore the gash across her eye. The bleeding had stopped and she could open her eye, but it was still an open wound.
They took their food with bows and thanks, but Yatsumi still hadn’t spoken a word. I looked to my mother.
‘Why has her cut not been healed?’ I asked.
‘I myself am unable to explain it,’ she answered. ‘It just wouldn’t heal, no matter how much power I put into it. It may yet heal on its own, but she will carry the scar for the rest of her life.’
‘Well… at least she will be alright.’
‘Perhaps,’ she whispered. ‘She wouldn’t speak a word to me though. This experience may have traumatized her.’
‘What can we do about that?’ I asked.
‘The only thing we can do is be as nice as possible to her. The rest is up to her.’
In the weeks that passed the new arrivals were growing healthier and healthier. The little koinu started walking and learned how to transform to its Youkai form. The men helped us with everything they could, from guarding to hunting. Yatsumi’s eye had healed little, but it had scarred up as my mother predicted. It was still as red as it was the day she came to us, but it was closed.
Three days after she came to us I took her up to the meadows high in the mountains. She smiled at me and had spent most of her time up there. When I had little else to do I would join her. Though she did not speak at all and I spoke to her very little we still played and laughed. I loved her laugh very much. It was like the soft singing of a lark in the sky.
I found her approach to playing rather comical. She would stare at me a while daringly and then start backing away, then get a little closer and repeat the process. It was like she wanted to play as two koinu do. It made me laugh sometimes. So I would start to chase her. There was no doubt in my mind that is the very thing she wanted me to do… and it was.
After chasing her for a straight hour one day I gave her the sign of defeat and collapsed in the flower beds. I was staring up at the sky as I caught my breath and she joined me within a few seconds. Within a few minutes I could breathe normally again so I sat up and looked out at the mountains below us.
Next thing I knew she was pulling at the ribbon that loosely held my hair back. I looked back at her and she smiled. I shrugged and let her do as she pleased with my hair, which ended up being a braid when she was through. She said beside me for a few minutes.
‘Your hair is very silky,’ she said after all those weeks of silence.
Her voice was heavenly and seemed to penetrate my heart. I had never heard a more pleasant sound in all my life. I wanted to hear it again and again.
‘Thank you,’ I said. ‘Your hair is beautiful. I’ve never seen black and white like that in any demon.’
‘My mother said that my father was from this clan before he died,’ she said. ‘I think that’s where the white comes from. I have never seen him though. He died before I was born. My mother was lost in the attack on our clan.’
‘I am sorry,’ I said.
‘Don’t be,’ she said quickly. ‘I am very grateful to you and your mother for allowing us into your clan. We might have died if you weren’t so generous.’
‘I would never be able to turn away a Youkai as beautiful as you,’ I said with a slight blush.
She smiled at me and kissed the crescent moon upon my forehead with the lightest whisper of a touch of her lips. The sensation caused a shiver to run through me and made goose bumps rise over my skin. I couldn’t help but smile. Though… I wanted more.
I took her hand in mine and leaned closer to her. Her eyes slowly closed as I got closer, but mine did not close until my lips met hers. After a few moments I realized she was kissing me back. I pulled back a little so that our lips no longer touched and parted mine ever so slightly and returned to her. Instinctively my tongue flicked out slowly and licked at her lower lip, ‘til her lips too were parted.
In that moment I could no longer tell who was kissing who. Our tongues caressed in perfect harmony with a passion unmatched by any couple in all of Japan. Everything was perfect, soft, and beautiful. I could not tell you how long this lasted, but it seemed to last forever.
When we finally regained some control over our passion we sat and watched the sun setting. Her head lay on my shoulder with her arm around my waist. I held onto her with my arm around her. It was the most peaceful moment I had ever experienced.......

Sesshomaru closed his eyes with a sigh. He couldn't bear to speak anymore at the moment. He hadn't even gotten to the sad part of the tale and already he was ready to break down.
Rin put her hand on his.
"Are you alright Sesshomaru-Sama?" she asked.
"I think we'll leave it here for tonight Rin-Chan," he said solemnly. "I feel I've spoken too much."
"When will you tell me the rest?" She asked.
"Tomorrow perhaps," he said. "If there is time. We should be going to sleep. It's getting late."
Rin nodded and kissed him on the cheek, then proceeded to her room.
