Chapter 9: An Accident…Or Not?

For the next few days, Kagome had to make sure that she wasn't pregnant. She didn't show any signs of being pregnant, but she still doubted it. Her strange signs made her parents wonder what was wrong with her. She still didn't regret that night, but she couldn't look her parents in the eyes, fearing of what could be or might happen. She never hid anything from them, and the guiltiness of being silent around them was driving her out of her mind. Her friends on the other hand, just silently prayed that nothing was wrong. Inuyasha was the tensest about this, considering the situation he was in, but Kagome assured him that it was going to be alright. He still worried for her though.
The following Wednesday, everyone decided to gather at Inuyasha's place after school. When they got there, they all went to the living room to do their homework. The silence was unbearable, so Sango decided to break the ice.
“So, Kagome, is it true that Rin wants to visit for Christmas?”
She looked up,
“That's the plan, but I still need to talk to her, trying to figure out how and when. She wants me to meet her new boyfriend.”
“Oh boy, she's got a boyfriend now. I thought she wasn't the type to care about boys.” Ayame asked, now seemingly interested.
“Well, she says that this one is a keeper. She fell for him right on the spot. I called her a few days ago and talked her to her about everything that's going on with me. When I told her that I had a boyfriend now, she couldn't believe it. Now she wants to meet you, Inuyasha. I think she wants to see it to believe it.”
Sango just laughed.
“Like Rin, she was never interested in boys, except for one. And he's sitting right next to you.”
Kagome and Inuyasha just cuddled closer together.
“Same goes for you, Sango. I've never seen you with any boy but Miroku. You were just waiting for him to notice you.”
Sango instantly gave a glare.
“Always ready with the comebacks aren't you?”
“Now that you mention it, the only boy I see you with is indeed Miroku.” Ayame pointed out.
“Why don't you guys ever shut your traps about this? You guys always do this when we discuss the topic of boys, especially when the boy is sitting right next to me and is about to have his feelings hurt if he doesn't remove his hands from me!!!” Miroku instantly lifted his hands up and scooted away from the now angry Sango.
“Look, just because we're going out, doesn't mean that you have to put your filthy hands on me whenever you please. I'm a force to be reckoned with and you know it!” Sango was now in angry mode and Miroku was getting the lecture yet again.
“I swear I can't begin to think why I tolerate you.”
“It's because you can't resist him Sango and you know it.” Inuyasha said, apparently being entertained.
“Obviously you want to be sent flying with Miroku!”
Inuyasha quickly hid behind Kagome, fear of facing Sango. Kagome just shook her head.
`This is one weird bunch of people, but that's what's makes it more fun!' Ayame thought while watching the funny scene spill before her.
After a few hours, everybody decided to take their leave. Miroku had driven over and asked if he could offer Sango a ride. She refused at first, but Ayame asked if she could be dropped off, seeing that she didn't drive here with her car. Sango quickly agreed and sat in the backseat with Ayame, leaving a disappointed Miroku to sit alone in the front. After they drove off, Kagome and Inuyasha were at the door way saying their goodbyes.
“You know, instead of walking, why don't I drive you home? It will be much quicker.” He offered while holding Kagome so close to him.
She smiled but shook her head. “No, I'll walk home. I think it's much safer for you, seeing that you are in fear of my father still.”
“You sure, cause something might happen to you on the way there. I have a funny feeling this time.”
“I'm sure. You worry too much. Don't think too much about it. I think that you want to spend more time with me.”
“That could be the truth” Inuyasha said while kissing her on the lips,
“Or it could be I have a sneaking suspicion that you might be in trouble.”
`He's really worried today for some reason.' She thought while looking into his eyes, seeing how concerned he really was.
“Look, I'll be okay. If something happens, I'll let you know, besides I wouldn't want you worried all the time, it isn't healthy.” She then leaned up to give him a quick good-bye kiss and was released from his arms. He still had her hand but quickly let it slip out of his. He saw her walk up the hill to her house. He stood still,
“Maybe I'm just worried over nothing. But, God I hope she will be alright.” When she was out of view, he walked back into the house, silently praying.

Kagome was in deep thought as well, wondering why Inuyasha was so tense. `He looked more sad and concerned than usual; I wonder what has him thinking that. It could be a prediction or perhaps a bad feeling in the gut. I have that feeling too, ever since last week with the fight with Kikyo. We'll just have to wait and see, I guess.' She continued to walk, not even aware of anything around her. It was pretty windy that day, so it was cold. She was bundled up, trying not to get knocked over by the strong breeze. After a while, she got pushed over forcefully, completely by surprise. She was now in the middle of the street, luckily there weren't any cars in any direction at the moment. `Maybe it was the wind, but it definitely felt like I was pushed by someone.' She looked over the side of the street she was on, but saw nothing or no one. She was the only one around. As soon as she felt like it was maybe her imagination gone wild, she heard a car quickly approaching. She turned to the direction where it was coming from, but didn't have enough time to react, because a powerful force just hit her hard and knocked her unconscious. The last thing she remembered was seeing a speedy, yellow car suddenly appearing and headed in her direction.

`Beep Beep….' was the next thing that Kagome heard. She slowly opened her eyes, trying to figure out what happened before she got knocked out. She was in a room, seeing nothing but white. She turned her head to realize that she was lying in a bed, with all kinds of wires and tubes going in to her. She had hard time breathing, and felt that her right side was aching with intense pain, but it was mostly from her waist down. It also felt a jolt when she tried to move her left shoulder and winced weakly with pain. She was just waking up and was trying to move but couldn't. `What happened to me? Why am I in a bed, feeling so much pain? I don't have any memory of this. I just feel….nothing but pain and being so weak that I can't even move.' She barely could make out 3 figures in the doorway because she was very tired, not to mention unable to think straight. She could make out the voices and recognized as her parents, the other must be a doctor or something.
The doctor was talking to her mom and dad about her condition.

“Well, the bad news is that her right leg is practically broken, including her hip which was the hardest hit area. And her left shoulder is in pretty bad shape so she can't move her entire left arm at all. Since the damage was so extensive, she now has hard time breathing and suffered from internal bleeding. I'm surprised she even made it here alive with all that damage.” The doctor explained to them. Her mom had a hand over her mouth, shocked and heartbroken and her other arm attached to her husband's arm. Her father put his hand over her arm, trying to soothe her. He too was suffering inside, but didn't show it.
“The good news is that she will walk again, but all in due time. And she will recover from her shoulder injury but all that and with the therapy she'll be taking and the medicine, it will take about a month or so to fully recover.” He looked at the parents and found some relieved faces. He then continued,
“She is lucky to have survived this ordeal, but anything could happen so we'll watch over her very carefully for the next week or so. Oh, and come to find out, see, we did a lot of tests on her and we found that she is sexually active.” Mom just had a wide-eyed expression, father on the other hand, a different story.
“WHAT?!” He exclaimed. The doctor retracted a bit, but continued with a professional tone,
“Yes, it's common to find teenagers, especially at her age, sexually active, but the good news is that she doesn't show any signs of being pregnant.” Mom just gave a relief sigh, but Dad looked like he was ready to pull out his hair. `When I get my hands on that boy, I'm going to rip him to shreds!!' He was now beyond shocked and ready to hit the roof. The doctor left them in Kagome's room, still too stunned too speak about the recent news. Her mom looked over at her father and knew he was about to explode. She led him out of the room and shut the door behind them and out into the hallway. That's where it got loud.

“I DON'T BELIEVE WHAT I JUST HEARD! I KNOW IT WAS THAT BOYFRIEND OF HERS! THE NEXT TIME I SEE HIM, I GOING TO TEAR HIM TO SHREDS! SHE IS TOO YOUNG TO BE SEXUALLY ACTIVE!” He shouted at the top of his lungs. Mom just sat there, watching him pace back and forth, holding her head.
“There's no need to shout like this. I admit I was stunned at first, but the doctor told us that she isn't pregnant and that's something of a relief. We know it was most likely Inuyasha that she did it with, but it could be a different story.” She said, showing complete calm and relieved emotions at the same time, to make him calm down, but it wasn't working.
“AND JUST AFTER I TOLD HER THAT SHE COULD STILL SEE HIM! I THOUGHT THIS WOULD NEVER HAPPEN! IF SHE WAS PREGNANT-“
“But she's not! Will you calm down before you throw a shoe? The right thing to do is to quietly talk to both of them, after Kagome is off the breathing machine and is able to hold a conversation, and find out why it happened. And don't jump to any conclusions before you hear them.” By this time, Dad walked off in some direction, after hearing his wife, and cursing under his breath, making threatening hand gestures and completely out of the zone. Mom shook her head and walked back into her daughter's room, sitting at the foot of the hospital bed. It was late at night and Kagome's surgery was a long one, so she was falling asleep, unknowingly that Kagome was barely awake.

The following morning, Kagome woke up really sleepy, but able to see fully, saw her parents at the end of the room and were waking up too. Her father noticed and motioned for mom to come over and look at their really injured daughter. Her mom rushed up to her and put a hand softly on the side of her head, rubbing it to let her know that she was there.
“It's going to be okay, sweetie. You're going to be fine now.” Her mom said, saying it as softly as possible, trying her best not to cry. Kagome blinked her eyes in response and looked over to her Dad.
“That's right. We were worried about you all night, baby girl, but the doctor says you're going to pull through, and we're grateful that you made it.” She knew that behind the stern face, was a concerned father shedding tears for her. She wanted, more than anything, to find out what happened to her, but didn't have enough energy to utter a peep. Just then her doctor walked in with a clipboard full of reports and info.
“Good morning, Ms. Higurashi, I assume you slept well?” Kagome slowly blinked her eyes.
“I'm pretty sure you want to know why you're here, so I'll tell you as calmly as I can.” The room was quiet, except for the machines beeping.
“You were in an accident. A bad one. From what I got here you were hit by car, a hit and run case, I believe. Your right side from the hip down is in bad shape but your hip got the worst of it. But you will be able to walk again. And your left shoulder was damaged too. That's why you probably feel your left arm as numb. You will move it again. I will explain more later on, seeing that you just woke up. I will be back later to check up on you.” And with that he left.
`That's what happened? Oh, my god. No wonder I feel so awful. This must be hard on mom and dad, seeing the looks on their faces, but I wonder how everybody else will take. All I know is I have to see my friends. I wonder how they're doing. Guess I should have let Inuyasha drive me home.' She thought. After hearing what just happened, she was in no mood to be awake and just drifted to sleep once again.

While Kagome was asleep, Mom called Sango's household to notify Sango of what occurred the day before. Her mom then told Sango, who of course, being her best friend, freaked out. She then called Miroku, Ayame, and Inuyasha. All were shocked and horrified, especially Inuyasha, who was in a far worst state. They all rushed to the hospital in a heartbeat after school. They met with Kagome's mom in the hallway.
Panting, Sango asked,
“Is she okay, what happened, when did it happen?” Mom told them,
“She's alright now. Just sleeping on and off, but the doctor said that's to be expected. It was a shock for us too. We got a call from the hospital saying that your daughter has been in a serious accident around 4:00 yesterday. Her father and I were too horrified to believe what she went through, but they say the worst part is over, but doctors are still concerned about her internal injuries.” Ayame and Sango were now starting to cry, Miroku turned his head away in disbelief, and Inuyasha was feeling more regret and more suffering that a few tears couldn't help but slip away. Her father came up behind Mom, looking who came, but when he got to Inuyasha, his face turned into a deathly glare that could make anyone crawl back home. Mom elbowed him to cool it.
“You can go in and see her now, just be careful with her.” They all nodded slowly and went into Kagome's room. Inuyasha saw the death glare that was given off by her father and shivers went all up and down his spine as he passed him.
They saw Kagome hooked up to a bunch of machines, including a breathing machine. She was sound asleep, trying to regain her strength, but when she heard a lot of footsteps, she slowly, painfully opened her eyes and turned to see her four friends coming in around her bed.

“Hey you.” Ayame said in a saddened voice.
“We were worried about you, girl. How can someone do this to you?!” Sango said, making an attempt to sound as brave as she could. She could tell that her friends were in such a state and seeing her like this wasn't making it any better. `I've never seen them so upset before. Seeing them looking at me with such horrified and saddened looks make me want to get back up and feel better again.' She looked at each of her friends' faces, but when she reached Inuyasha's, that's when she made a desperate attempt not to cry. `I have never seen him cry before, and he's the one who wanted to take me home, but I insisted that I would be fine. And seeing him like this is making me feel the deep feeling of regret and guiltiness. Now I can't help but shed a few tears.' Everyone looked at their faces, meaning that they would want some privacy. Miroku spoke up,
“You know we are going to be visiting you everyday until you're out of the hospital, so this won't be the last time. We all stick together when one of us is hurt or sick no matter what.” Kagome looked over, sighed and blinked in response, seeing that she couldn't speak. He smiled.
“Okay guys, why don't we all skedaddle out of here and leave these two?” Sango said as she motioned the three of them to exit out.
“We'll be back, Kaggie, tomorrow, so don't worry.” They all left the room and said goodbye, to her parents. They noticed that one was missing and looked into the window of the room to see Inuyasha at the head of the bed to where Kagome was.
“I don't believe this, why is he still here?” Dad asked, very annoyed about the sight in front of them. Mom, on the other hand, just sighed and turned to face him.
“It's probably because he wants some time alone with her. After all, they seem to love ach other and it's quite obvious. Besides, if I was seriously hurt, you'd want the same thing for us, so leave them alone, and quit bugging the poor boy. You need to accept him going out with her, because I don't think even you can break these two apart.” She looked back in the room and turned into the hallway. Dad eyed them and soon followed.

She could say nothing, seeing that she has hard time breathing, so all she could do was try and mutter, which was the best she could do. Inuyasha saw her weak attempt to talk; but went to her side, grabbing, her only working, right hand.
“Shhh, don't say anything. You need your rest.” She could now see tears ready to spill, and it was killing her to see him like this.
“When I found out what happened to you, I couldn't grasp it, I was so devastated and couldn't talk to anyone. I thought I lost you.” She lifted her right hand and softly touched his cheek, hoping it would ease the pain. He smiled and covered her hand, yet again.
“But I know you'll get better. You're strong and you can get through this, because I need you.” She could only stare into eyes and seeing him shed tears for her. She let a single tear fall, `I know he thinks it's his fault, letting me walk home, only because I insisted that I'd be fine, and looked what happened. I ended up in a hospital bed, watching everyone look at me with grief and sadness. But it's not your fault and how can I convince you otherwise? The only thing we can do is wait, until I'm able to talk.' She felt the sleep overcoming her and was quickly closing her eyes, but not feeling a kiss on her forehead and shortly after, one on her hand. Inuyasha left her to sleep.
Seeing her in pain, it was unbearable to him. He took one last look at her and left the room, thinking, `There is something going on. She wouldn't step out in front a car. She was hit on purpose, hearing that it was hit and run kind of thing. We have to find out who did it and I will personally see to it who ever did it, will feel my wrath, not to mention everybody else's. But for now, we can only concentrate on helping her recover.'
