Chapter 3: News all around
Inuyasha watched Kagome trot off after Sango, his face red with embarrassment and humiliation. The entire incident was out of his control all he remembered was Kagome's scent wafting up to him and a voice in the back of his mind telling him to take her, right there in the middle of the forest. Inuyasha knew that wasn't the way to handle things, he didn't want to be seen as a common animal rutting around in undergrowth.
But the urge was definitely there, an underlying desire which fueled his core. In all reality, Inuyasha had loved Kagome since he had first laid eyes on her. The hanyou casually turned around to look at the God tree behind him. The mark where the arrow had pierced through his shoulder was still in the aged bark.
He climbed up on the tangled roots and touched the place. After all his adventures and seeing everything Japan had to offer, this was the one placed he loved to be; this elderly tree where he had spent a good fifty years of his lifetime. Even though he remembered none of it, this was his sanctuary. No one could reach him from the uppermost branches of his beloved tree.
Suddenly, there was a bustle of movement in the shrubbery. Inuyasha turned around swiftly, than snarled.
“I know your there, Sesshomaru!”
“It took you long enough to realize, half-breed. Your nose isn't as strong as a real demons'.” The Taiyouki stepped out from behind a tree and with his cold demeanor in tow.
“What the fuck do you want? You've only been gone for a day! Can't you just go home already? Aren't you supposed to be `watching' your lands or something?” Inuyasha slowly rested his hand on Tetsusaiga in case there was a battle to come.
With venom in his voice, Sesshomaru replied back. “What your brother can't come to visit his favorite sibling for more reasons than battle?”
Inuyasha growled and stepped down from the gnarled roots, his hand never leaving his hilt.
“I'll ask you again, what the fuck do you want?”
Sesshomaru took a step closer and watched his brother carefully, as if deciding whither or not to tell him something. A gleam appeared in his eyes, but as fast as it appeared it was gone again.
“For three reasons I have returned. One is that my lands are safe in the hands of my advisors for a while longer. Two…I was curious as to how the second part of the wish would turn out. And three, I smelt another hanyou in the vicinity and it smelt very familiar.”
“Feh. Well I'm not gonna tell you who it is.”
Sesshomaru shook his head. “Do you really believe that I am that much of a fool, and would not find out by myself? Especially, since I left my ward and Jaken with your pack. It was just a matter of filtering your stench out of the equation.” He sneered which caused Inuyasha to shiver involuntarily.
“So what? Kagome is now an Inu-hanyou. It's not like she wants to be one. She was practically disgusted with herself this morning when she found out.” Inuyasha's ears dropped a little.
“Let me give you a word of advice half-breed. And listen closely because this Sesshomaru will not repeat himself. Just because everything is different doesn't mean that everything has changed. Everything changes, nothing perishes and to be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become is a virtue unbeknownst to many. I cannot say whether things will get better if they change; what I can say is they must change if they are to get better.
Kagome has sacrificed her entire life to put together that jewel and she stood there beside you never faltering. Now she is going through a difficulty in her existence and you are in a tree. She made a pure wish and yet it backfired on her and turned her into something that she wasn't anticipating.
How would you like to have been changed over a pure wish? Changed into a human forever, how would you feel then? Angry I expect, maybe even sad. Well take a lesson from your wench and get over yourself. She's expecting your comfort and you push her away. Think closely to your actions, Inuyasha. For you never know when they might turn on you.”
Sesshomaru turned back into the forest and walked into the gloom, quickly disappearing into the darkness.
Inuyasha was speechless. His brother had never said more than a cruel sentence to him and now he goes off and lectures him about change. Inuyasha knew about change, he did it once a month on the night of the new moon.
That night was a night he hated. His senses dulled, his strength was weakened, and he was scared. Embracing his feelings, Inuyasha could only imagine how Kagome was feeling. Being changed into something that you didn't expect was something frightening. All of Sesshomaru's words made perfect sense.
`Kagome, right when you needed me the most, I ran away, upset over a little comment that I shouldn't have taken literally. What can I do so you'll forgive an ignorant, worthless, half-breed?'
Sighing, Inuyasha started his journey back to the village to confront Kagome and grovel until she forgave him.
The journey through the forest was short and uneventful. But when he reached Kaede's hut, an interesting story was taking place.
“So Kagome, now that you're an inu-hanyou like Inuyasha, is there going to be any magic sparking up between you two?” Miroku watched with humorous eyes as Kagome's face turned a brilliant shade of red.
“I…I mean Inuyasha and I, don't really, umm talk about that kinda stuff.” A hint of sadness tinged her voice.
“But I suppose you and Inuyasha will have to spend more time together so you can get used to these new….changes….right?”
For his position outside the doorway, Inuyasha listened intently to what Kagome's answer would be.
“I suppose so. But if he doesn't want to, then I don't mind trying to figure things out by myself. It's a new adventure in the making!”
Inuyasha could see Kagome's face in his minds eye, she was forcing a smile.
`Always trying to find that silver lining'
He decided that he had had enough and very prominently walked into the room.
“Oi Kagome! You're coming with me.” Inuyasha grabbed Kagome's arm and dragged her beside him.
Kagome looked nervous. “Why?”
Inuyasha rolled his eyes, his patience already starting to wear thin. “Because we're gonna find out how well you do as a hanyou.”
“Inuyasha that's really nice of you.” Admiration filled her magenta eyes.
Letting go of her arm he replies,“Well, I'm only doing it so you don't give hanyous an even worse reputation than what they already have.”
Kagome took it, like it was a blow. She watched Inuyasha storm out of the hut and turned back to the monk.
“I told you he would help me.”
Without even waiting for a reply, she too walked out of the hut following Inuyasha.
After leaving the hut, Inuyasha was at war with himself.
`Why after I try to do nice things I always have to end it by saying something done. I am such a baka!'
`It's because you love her that's why. You should just tell her, you know she already accepts you for what you are, and now even more so because she the same!'
`I can't…I'm still worthless, no one could ever love a half-breed.'
`Really now…What about another half-breed?'
His internal struggle came to an end as Kagome's scent drifted over to him. She smelt of flowers and fresh strawberries. He could never understand how one person could possibly smell so good. Kagome arrived not soon after and waited patiently in front of him.
`Baka apologize, right now do it'
“Kagome…I'm…Kagome could you ever…”
“Inuyasha, I always forgive you. I understand.” Kagome gave him a sad smile and rested her hand on his shoulder.
“So are we going to start or what?”
Without even worrying about what his mind would tell him, he pulled Kagome into a tight embrace.
“No Kagome it's not ok. I am sorry, I really am. I'm just…not so good with words. So I'm sorry that I don't tell you everything or that we don't talk enough, it's just that it's hard….Kagome?”
Silent tears started to roll down her cheeks. But these were not tears of sadness, no on the contrary, these were tears of happiness. Inuyasha had finally talked to her about something other than Naraku or the jewel shards. He was saying things that were on his mind. After three years of being together, it wasn't until after their adventure was complete that she was getting to really know him.
“Kagome, are you ok?” worry laced his voice.
“Yeah I'm fine.”
Kagome pulled back from his embrace and wiped her eyes.
“Thank you Inuyasha for letting me in.”
Inuyasha's face softened, “Well get used to it wench, because we're gonna be spending a lot of time together.”
Kagome grinned foolishly. “That's fine with me, now, lets get started!”
“Yeah…lets get started.” And with that, Inuyasha threw Kagome to the ground.
