Part One: New Beginnings

Inuyasha was sitting at his desk three years after his mate's death. Some days it was hard living without her and some days he managed. He'd found a letter of hers recently, that she had written to him before she died. Inuyasha had to admit that it was sad but she seemed alright with the knowledge of her own death. He was hurt and angry that she had kept it from him but in the end he realized her death wasn't in vain and it did help a lot of people and saved a lot of lives.

Inuyasha got up and put the letter away. It was late and he should be getting to bed soon. He had a early business meeting the next morning and had to be in his best shape for it. On nights like these, he thought about her a lot. He missed her and always held hope that she would one day come back. he knew he was probably ridiculous in thinking that she would come back but he had hope if nothing else.

As Inuyasha made his way over to the bed something began to happen. The jewel around his neck began to buzz and glow. He felt a surge of electricity shoot through his body to the tips of his toes and back. as if an invisible hand held it, the jewel was pulled from his neck and spun directly in front of his face. He reached out to touch it but his hand was blocked by sheer power. He drew it back as if he was burned and looked at the jewel. The light got brighter and the buzzing got louder. It stopped suddenly and Inuyasha could only look at it suspending in the air. Just when he thought everything was calm and back to normal...the jewel shattered.

Inuyasha was in a state of shock and was helpless to watch his mate's soul float out into the air. He saw a figure standing before him and swallowed. It was Kagome's soul. She was looking directly at him with a sad smile. Inuyasha wanted badly to go to her but his legs refused to move. he looked down to see what was wrong with him and when he looked up again, Kagome was gone.

"No," Inuyasha said. She couldn't be gone. "Kagome."

"Inuyasha," a voice whispered. He looked around but he saw no one.

"Kagome. Come back to me," he said as he began to move. still he saw no one as he searched the room.

"Inuyasha my mate," the voice whispered again. It seemed to be coming from the air. The sound of Kagome's soft voice floated around him lifting his long hair up around him causing it to stand on it. "My love."

"Kagome. Come back to me please. I need you," he said almost in tears.

"I need you too," the voice said from directly behind him. he spun around to see Kagome's form standing there but the apparition was transparent. He could look right through her and knew that this was not his Kagome in the flesh but his Kagome in the spirit.

"My mate," Inuyasha said as he moved towards the figure. The girl stood there as she waited for him to come to her. He reached out hoping he could grab her and bring her into his arms but of course his hand went right through her. He looked up at and saw his frowning face reflected in her sad eyes.

"I'm sorry Inuyasha," she said as the tears began to fall. He knew he couldn't brush them away and it hurt him.

"No kagome. there is no need for you to be sorry," he said as he stood directly in front of her. "I miss you so much."

"I was always here maybe not with you physically but Inuyasha you will always have my heart."

"Kagome I--" Inuyasha started then stopped. His eyes widened when he saw the vision of her getting lighter and lighter. She was disappearing before his eyes. "Kagome?"

"Inuyasha," she said as he image blinked in and out.

"Kagome don't leave me again," he said as he reached out to grab what he could not touch.

"Inuyasha. Remember I love you," she said as she felt herself slipping away.

"No Kagome don't leave," Inuyasha begged. He was helpless to do nothing but stand there and watch her leave him again.

"Look for me Inuyasha," she said to him.

Inuyasha sat up in bed and ran a hand over his face. For the past three weeks since the jewel was broken he's had that dream. It really did happen and at first he thought he was crazy. He searched for the jewel but couldn't find it and had no idea where it went. He was distraught. He'd lost her soul and he'd never be with her again. Inuyasha didn't know what to do or if he should talk to someone about it. He decided that would be best. He knew there was only one person he could go to.

"I don't know Inuyasha," Miroku said as he looked at his best friend. He was sympathetic to the man's situation but really didn't have any answers. He thought about all they had discussed and went over Inuyasha's story in his head but the only thing he came up with was that maybe Kagome did come back and was waiting to be found by him.

Inuyasha sat across from Miroku with his head bent. He felt like he was going crazy. For three years the jewel had simply hung around his neck and nothing happened. Now all of a sudden he broke it and Kagome's soul was released. He felt like he failed her. He couldn't protect her in the flesh and he still couldn't do it in the spirit. Maybe he wasn't supposed to be with her after all. Even though the thought ran through his mind, Inuyasha refused to believe that. Kagome was his mate and he was determined to get her back. he had to. Without her he was nothing.

"Thanks anyway man," Inuyasha said as he stood and left the room. Miroku watched him go hoping Inuyasha wouldn't revert to the distraught hopeless man he was after Kagome's death. He stood. He'd have to consult someone about this.

Inuyasha made his way down the hall to his office. He figured if he was busy it would take his mind off of it. He flipped through a stack of papers that was on his desk. He'd get some work done while he had the drive to do so. No matter what he did though Kagome was still on his mind.

At one point, as Inuyasha was reading over some reports, he was sure that he heard Kagome calling out to him. he looked up and around the room but of course he saw absolutely no one. With a frustrated sigh, he went back to his work. All was quiet and then the double doors that led to his balcony flew open and a gust of wind entered the room stirring up the papers on his desk. He went over to the door and closed it. To him the doors seemed to be just a bit too horror movie like and expecting to see something behind him, he turned quickly. Nothing was there.

"You're losing it Yash," he told himself then went back to his desk. He really needed to keep himself occupied so he wouldn't trip out.

"Hello Inuyasha," a voice said from directly before him. he looked up from his work and almost fell out of the chair. There sitting at the chair before him was kagome. she was smiling at him as if she had been waiting for this moment.

"Ka-Kagome," he said as he looked at his mate. She was there. In front of him. his Kagome was back. she did mean what she said. She did come back to him.

"I've missed you," she said as she gave him a warm smile. Inuyasha felt himself fall in love all over again.

"Oh god Kagome I've missed you too!" he said as he ran from around the desk to where she sat. when he reached out to take her into his arms his hand met nothing but air and she was gone. Startled and sad he looked around the room.

"Over here Inuyasha," Kagome said. He spun around and saw her sitting on top of his desk. She was smiling at him seductively and he grinned back at her. He didn't even think about how she did that little trick. All he knew was that she was back and they would be together again.

He moved forward towards her. The way she was looking at him made him think of one thing only. "you have no idea how much I've missed you," he said as he leaned in for a kiss. Kagome did the same as well and just as he closed his eyes to kiss her, she was gone. He opened them when he failed to feel her soft lips beneath his own and frowned. She was gone again. He looked around expecting her to be somewhere else. Maybe she was just playing with him...but she never came back

"Oh my god. I've lost it. I've lost my mind."

If one was looking for him, they would find Inuyasha seated beside a tombstone staring blankly ahead. He had really lost it and thought maybe he needed to spend some time with Kagome. he usually went out there when the grief was too much for him to bear. He had to remind himself that she was gone forever and not coming back.

"I thought I saw you today," he said to the wind. "You were in my office talking to me. I was sure you were coming back. I'm sorry I broke the jewel and lost your soul kagome. you trusted me with something so precious and I lost you again." he had started to cry then. No one had ever seen him cry since her death and funeral and he hadn't wanted them too. He did however give over to his grief when he was alone.

"If you came back Kagome I would have changed. I know you didn't like the life I lead or the decisions I made. I would have changed everything for you. I'm sorry for all the shit I put you through when you were alive. If I had known you were going to die I would have done things a lot differently. I'm so sorry Kagome."

"You shouldn't waste your tears on me," said a voice from above Inuyasha. He spun around quickly to see a transparent Kagome sitting on her tombstone.

"Kagome? is that really you or am I really going crazy?" he asked the apparition as he stood to his feet and looked down at her.

"It's really me. My soul anyway," she said. She looked down at her own grave with sad eyes then back up at him.

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. You died because of me."

Kagome shook her head and smiled at him. "No. I died because I was supposed to. If you had read the scrolls you would have seen that I was the fourth soul. It was my job and duty to rid the world of a force such as Naraku."

"I'm still sorry. It was me who got you involved. Kagome please come back to me. Is there anyway you can do that? I mean your soul is free yet you still linger at my side."

"That's because I'm your mate Inuyasha. Even in death but I'm sorry Kagome is dead and can't return to this world."

"No don't say that! I need you! I really need you!" he said as he stepped forward.

Kagome gave him a sad smile. "You don't need me Inuyasha. You have a life to lead. I know you love me and I love you too but you must move on."

"No kagome. I can't! There is no life without you!"

"I've lost mine already. Don't lose yours as well. Live for the both of us Inuyasha," she said as she floated over to him. she hovered just in front of him until they were face to face. "Remember, if you love me enough I'll return to you."

Inuyasha's eyes closed as he felt the faintest of touches against his lips. It was kagome. she was trying to comfort him. when he opened his eyes again she was gone. He sighed and frowned. He did love her enough. He really did and he hoped she came back to him.

Days later Inuyasha was thinking maybe he was crazy. These visits from Kagome could not have been real and maybe he needed help. He paced around the house expecting her to show up and when she didn't he felt disappointed and hurt. He needed held badly but was afraid to tell anyone in case they committed him to an asylum. As he laid on his bed one night thinking about what she said, Kagome showed up right beside him.

"I missed lying here beside you," she said scaring the hell out of him. he was so startled that he jumped up and fell out of the bed. When he sat up on the floor he looked over and saw a giggling Kagome watching him. "I'm sorry my love."

"It's okay Kag," he said as he got on the bed beside her. It was almost like three years ago. It was almost as if nothing had changed and she hadn't died.

"This will be the last visit from me," she said sadly. Inuyasha looked over to her with sad eyes wanting to beg her to stay but he knew it was pointless. She couldn't stay and even if she could what kind of life would they have together. She would be a spirit and he would be alive.

"Where will you go?" he asked knowing very well that an Angel like her would no doubt go to heaven and leave him all alone on earth.

"I don't know. They haven't really explained everything to me," she said cryptically. Inuyasha glanced over at her and saw her frowning and her mouth was moving as if she was talking to someone then all of a sudden she smiled. She looked at him with a wide grin and threw her arms around him. for a few brief seconds the hug was real and he could feel her body wrapped around his and then it turned to almost nothing. He wondered if maybe it had happened or if his mind was playing tricks on him.

"Inuyasha," Kagome said in a sultry voice that had him hard faster than he could blink. He looked over to her waiting for her next words and was surprised when she grabbed him and kissed him. now mind you, he had dreamed of this for the last three years and fantasized about this almost everyday but there was no way his mind was strong enough to make him feel that she was real. He placed a hand on the small of her back and gasped into her mouth when he felt firm flesh. As he wrapped his arms around her, Kagome deepened the kiss and soon she was moaning in his mouth.

"Mmmm Inuyasha," she said softly and he felt that if he didn't have her he would explode. He laid her back on the bed and deepened the kiss even more. "Yes Inuyasha take me." he grinned down at her ready to do what she had asked of him. she didn't have to ask really. It was already what he had planned.

"Mmm...Inuyasha."

"Yes Kagome."

"Inuyasha."

"Kagome."

"INUYASHA!"

Startled Inuyasha opened his eyes and looked around the room. He saw Sango standing over him with a sad smile on her face. As he sat up, he became focused on the world around him and he realized it was all just a dream. There was no kagome. she was not back and he was alone once again. He looked up at his sister and she took a seat beside him on the bed.

"Still dreaming of her I see," she said softly and rested her head on his strong shoulder. "I think about her a lot too. Like what would have happened if she was still alive."

Inuyasha gave a wry grin. "She and I would have gotten married and we'd have kids running around her somewhere."

Sango smiled at him. "It's a dream we all shared," she said softly. She looked down at her lap and frowned. Inuyasha glanced over to her and hugged her close to him. he knew what was going on. He wasn't as oblivious to other people's problems like everyone thought he was. He wasn't so caught up in his grief for Kagome that he didn't see what was going on in his own home.

After being together for so long, Sango and Miroku had called it quits. Inuyasha was caught between them and really didn't want to pick sides so he hadn't. It was sad though. If it was one couple he thought would have made it, it would have been them. He really didn't understand the whole thing because neither of them wanted to talk about it and he didn't want to force the issue. All he knew was one day Miroku just packed up his things and left and its been like that ever since. Inuyasha hugged his sister close and gave her a kiss on her forehead.

"If you ever want to talk about it remember I am her for you," he told her. She nodded and gave him a peck on the cheek.

"Don't worry about it Inu. I'm fine. I'll survive," she said with a big smile he knew was fake but didn't comment on it. "Anyway its getting late and I should be getting to bed now."

"Okay," he said and watched as she left. "Wait why did you come in here?"

Sango looked at her big brother deciding whether or not she should tell him then blushed. "I needed a hug," she said and left the room before he could comment.

Inuyasha only grinned after she left and thought that he needed one too. He got up from the bed thinking a nice shower would do the trick for him that night. He was kind of tense and really needed to loosen the knots in his muscles. He spent at least fifteen minutes under the hot spray before returning to his bedroom. After he got dressed he was ready to return to dreamland when something caught his eyes. it was a piece of paper on the bed that he was sure wasn't there before. He lifted it and saw that it was a note.

My Mate,

I told you if you loved me enough I'd return to you and you have proven your love to me. Look for me Inuyasha. I may have changed but I am still yours. Look for me and remind me of our love. Remind me of our past. Remind me of the future we're to have together. Look for me my love as I will be looking for you in my heart.

Your mate,

Kagome

Still clutching the note in his hand, Inuyasha was wearing a broad grin on his face. His Kagome was back and she was looking for him. he found it hard to talk at that point but there was really nothing to say. Kagome was back for him and he would find her. He would find her and things would be so different between them. He would show her only the love that she deserved and he would give her so much more than he had ever given her.

Inuyasha took the note and placed it in a place that would keep it safe along with her other note to him. the first one was so sad but this last one gave him hope. He would have Kagome again and nothing would stand in the way of their happiness this time. He promised himself that as he went to bed that night. He promised that when he found Kagome again she would be his and no one else's. She'd never leave him and this time not even death could stand in their way.
