Rin sat in the library, she should study but she was bored to death with the scrolls with spells. She would rather train with her papa. The way of the sword was way more exciting than reading dusty old scrolls with words that she hardly could pronounce.

- Rin-chan, what are you doing? Kaede's voice was scolding.

- I am sorry Kaede-sama, but I hate reading about this, sighed the young woman.

Kaede frowned a bit, the girl's magical training had taken longer than she had expected, although Sesshoumaru was very pleased with her weapon-training. Rin was very skilled with spears and swords of all kind. Dagger's was another thing that she was more than good at. She could throw a small knife very far and she could hit a moving target with them.

But the time was running out, both for the future and for the aging miko. Death was waiting for Kaede and for each passing day the death came closer and closer.

- Please Rin-chan, you must learn these spells before you can go anywhere, said Kaede.

- I know Kaede-sama, but that does not make it more fun to read.

- I know it as well, I had a hard time learning about them too.

- What is it I am going to fight? asked Rin for the thousand and ten times.

- I am not sure, but the safety of the world lays in your hands, said Kaede with a sad voice. She had put a heavy task upon the young woman's shoulders.

- Do you think I will pass through the well? Should we not test that first? What if it will not let me through, then you have trained me for nothing, said Rin and put a black lock behind her ear.

- Is that how you feel Rin-chan? That you think this is nothing?

- No, not really, but I still would like to test the well.

- What if you can not come back again, then you will face the evil with unfinished schooling.

- I hate it when you turn things around like that, snorted Rin.

A soft sound from the door made them both look up. They saw Sesshoumaru stand in the doorway and Rin smiled brightly.

- Papa!! she said and got up to hug him. He had been patrolling his borders but he was back. - Your finally back, I've missed you.

- I missed you too pup, how have you been? I hope you have listened well to Kaede-sama's teachings, said Sesshoumaru and hugged the teenaged girl tightly.

- Yes she have, said Kaede although it was not entirely true, but she was sure that Sesshoumaru was aware of it.

- Good, because I have no more to teach you Rin, you must complete Kaede's schooling, then you will be able to take on what ever it is that is threatening the world, said Sesshoumaru.

- But Papa….

- No buts little pup, you will do as you are requested.

Rin pouted and went back to the desk and demonstratively rolled up a scroll and began reading; she was not going to talk to her papa for the rest of the evening. Oh yes, she was going to read alright, she was going to read until her eyes bled with soreness.

* Two years later… Rin's 19th birthday *

Kaede gave the girl a gift wrapped in blood red silk. She saw Rin's eager look and she motioned the girl to open it. Rin did just that and she got tears in her eyes when she saw the black miko dress. It was not like the traditional dress with red pants and white shirt, no this was all black. But a small white demon dog was sown over her left breast, the sign of Sesshoumaru and since Rin was his pup, it was only fair that she should wear his "mark".

- It will provide with some cover during the night, explained the old miko.

- Thank you Kaede-sama, whispered Rin thickly.

- You are welcome my child.

Sesshoumaru had a gift for his daughter as well. He gave her his present; it too was wrapped in red silk but much heavier than Kaede's gift. Rin opened it and a small gasp escaped her lips. Inside the red cloth lay one black chest armour with metal clasps in the front, around the midsection was a set of thin knives, no longer than a few inches, they were placed so she easily could get her hands on them. She was going to wear it under her black dressing. Next to the armour lay a sword, much alike those carried by samurais, but it was smaller and lighter. Rin grabbed the handle and swung it around in the air.

- It is made of Housenki's diamond body. I was told that it is indestructible, said Sesshoumaru when he saw the questing look inside Rin's black green eyes.

- Thank you Papa, she whispered with tears trickling her face.

- You have proven worthy of it my daughter. But there is more.

- M-more?

Rin looked at the package once again and saw two wristbands. Sesshoumaru helped her with putting them on.

- Do this, he ordered and made a flick of his wrist to show what he meant.

Rin did as she was asked and two small blades appeared on the upper part of the bands. Her mouth made a silent Ohh, these she liked a lot. No body could see it and very few knew of her love of weapons. She flicked her wrists again and the small blades disappeared into the bands again. A very sly invention she admitted.

- Thank you Papa, I love them.

She hugged the great demon lord with all that she was worth and she received his warm affection as well.

- Tonight we celebrate; tomorrow we will take you to the well, said Sesshoumaru but regretted his words as soon as they left his lips. He could feel her tense up inside his arms.

- Yes Papa, she said and released herself from his warm embrace.

But when the food was carried into the room she forgot all about tomorrow and she engulfed herself with a feeding frenzy. Sesshoumaru and Kaede chuckled at her enthusiasm.

* At the well *
A more teary farewell had not been witness before. Rin cried rivers and hugged her father tightly, not wanting to let go. Kaede saw the tears in Sesshoumaru's eyes but he refused to let them fall. But Kaede had no such qualms, her wrinkled cheeks were drenched. She loved Rin like a granddaughter. When hugs and kisses and more hugs had been exchanged Rin took a step back, and she smiled sadly.

Sesshoumaru tried to grasp the fact that his little girl, his pup was going away. Just seeing her stand there in front of the old battered well made his heart swell with love and pride. She looked so regal, so unworldly, in her black dress. You could see the black armour between the folds of textile.

- Be careful pup and come back soon, he whispered and Rin nodded.

- I will papa, I will.

The next second she fell into the well.
