Chapter 1: Joining the Track team
“Hurry up, Kagome!”
She looked up to see her teammate and friend, Shippo, waving a clawed hand at her to hurry up. She donned her brand new workout attire. A black top with black comfy caprees. Not to mention her brand new white running shoes. Her mom was so good to her.
“Okay, I’m coming!”
As she ran to catch up with him, she thought back to the day she walked into the track coach’s classroom to join the team. He had seemed nice enough, and happily welcomed her into the team.
‘That’s coach Taisho for you,’ she thought with a smile.
“Hey, Kagome, what are you thinking about?” Shippo asked, curious as to what was going through his friend’s head. He sported a green top that went with his eyes beautifully, and black sweatpants.
“Hm? Oh, nothing Shippo. Just thinking.” She gave him a soft smile and continued on.
Shippo grinned. “Are you nervous? It’s a lot of work, you know.”
“I know,” she responded. “Hopefully I won’t be too sore after. I did do swimming last year.”
“Oh yeah… then you should be alright, champ!” he said with a grin. “Good luck on your first day! I can’t believe you decided to be a shot putter. That’s a heavy ball!” he said, a hint of concern in his voice.
“I’ll be alright!” she assured him. “I just gotta build muscle! I’m already pretty strong as it is” she said, playfully flexing her arm biceps. She heard someone chuckle behind her.
“Are ya sure, wench? You look pretty dainty to me. I give you two days to last, three tops.”
‘InuYasha.’
She turned just as the half demon chuckled again. Golden eyes met with narrowed chocolate brown ones, and she flushed in anger.
“Screw you, Inu! Just because your father is the coach, you don’t have the right to talk down to me!” She huffed, then turned away, pissed of. Why did he always have to pick on her?
She heard him chuckle again.
“Hey man, back off. Just leave Kagome alone” Shippo told InuYasha. She inwardly smiled, grateful he was defending her.
“Yes InuYasha, I agree. Leave Kagome alone.”
She turned again to see Kikyo coming up from behind.
InuYasha rolled his eyes, pushed past Shippo and Kagome, grabbed up the heavy, twelve pound ball he threw with, and continued on towards the doors that would lead him outside.
“Keh. Whatever. Higurashi, your just lucky that Kikyo came along.” And with that, he opened the doors and stepped out.
Kagome glared at where he had gone out, and then stuck out her tongue, dismissing it. She then continued to grab up the ball she was supposed to use. Coach Taisho had explained to her that it was called a ‘shot’, and weighed eight pounds, when he was explaining the different events to her. The object of the sport was to throw it as far as possible, which was easier said than done, as Coach Taisho had put it. She had had a choice between sprinting, high jump, long jump, and shot put. She had chosen shot put because, to her, it had sounded the most challenging.
No. That wasn’t the entire truth. She had chosen shot put after asking Shippo what event InuYasha did. He had replied ‘shot put’, and so that’s what she rolled with. Her reasoning? Simple. She kinda had a thing for him. He was tall, gorgeous, and muscular. Plus he had a great sense of humor when he wasn’t busy picking on her.
Yes, she had a thing for him. She had wanted to ask him out, too. There was just a slight problem.
He was dating Kikyo.
And the kicker was, she had respect for Kikyo. Not to mention she just wasn’t the boyfriend stealing type of girl.
So, she was stuck wanting something that she couldn’t have. Just great.
“I’m sorry, Kagome” Kikyo said, looking at the young girl apologetically.
“Don’t worry about it,” Kagome said, waving a hand flippantly. “You and I both know that’s just the way he is.”
“Yeah…..” was Kikyo’s response.
Shippo ran towards the high jumpers. “I gotta go, Kagome. Their warming up, and I don’t wanna get yelled at.” He waved and ran off. She called a ‘later’, then continued on walking with Kikyo.
“Kagome!”
She turned towards the source of the voice and spotted Sango and Miroku making their way towards her. She gave a smile and waved, walking over to them, with Kikyo trailing behind her.
“Hey guys, what’s up? The sprinters haven’t started practice yet?” she questioned.
“No, not yet,” Miroku responded. “We’re still waiting for everyone to show up and finish getting ready.”
Miroku had on a blue shirt with black shorts, and Sango had on a pink top, with black leggings and blue shorts.
“Huh. Why is everyone wearing black pants?” she mused with a grin.
“Kagome, the shot putters are starting to warm up. Lets go.” And with that, she headed in the direction the shot putters were warming up at.
“Coming!” she called. “Bye guys, see you later!” she told her friends with an nervous smile.
“You’ll do fine, Kagome.” Miroku stated.
“Good luck, Kagome!” Sango encouraged.
Kagome gave her friends the thumbs up, and when they returned it, she turned around and headed off after Kikyo.
When she caught up, Kikyo gave me the run down.
“Okay, first we do stretches, and then we run five laps around the field. After that we start practicing our throws. Me, you, and Kagura are the only women shot putters. The men are InuYasha, Seshoumaru, Bankotsu, Jakotsu, and Koga. They’re all pretty cocky, but you should get used to it quick enough.” She turned to me and smile.
“Alright then, Kagome. Let’s get started.”
