Updates aren’t going to be that frequent, but I’m going to try my best. And also, I’m going to try to incorporate a little Japanese into this, so I’ll be putting a glossary at the end of any chapter I do put it in. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu! (Please take care of me!) ^_^

Chapter 2: Unreturned Affections

“Okay team, that wraps up today’s practice. Good job everyone, see you tomorrow!” Coach Taisho yelled out.

Kagome breathed a sigh of relief. Man had today been tough. She looked over to see a shirtless InuYasha making his way to the locker rooms.

‘Kami is he gorgeous…’ she thought ruefully.

“Well well well, what is this I see? A little crush on this one’s otouto, perhaps?”

Kagome froze mid stride, recognizing that smooth baritone anywhere.

She flushed, embarrassed, and turned to face Sesshoumaru. The youkai had a knowing grin plastered on his face, and his eyes looked playfully down at her.

“I don’t know what your talking about, Sesshoumaru,” she shot back, and with that, continued to make her way back towards the school building. He was quick to catch up.

“I think you know very well what I’m talking about, Higurashi-chan. It is quite obvious to those who know what to look for.”

She turned to him and looked him square in the eye.

“So what happens now? Are you gonna tell him something you don’t even know for sure?”

He flashed her a mischievous grin. “Absolutely not. This one is just an observer. I don’t plan to interfere in the affairs of others, and especially one such as you. I was just making a comment on it. That is all.”

And with that, he gave her one last look, and turned to walk away. If Kagome knew any better, she could have swore she saw something in his eyes. But it was quickly concealed before she could identify what it was. With a shrug, she turned and walked into the girl’s locker room.

Kagome walked into the locker room and headed straight to her locker. She had been lucky enough to score a locker next to Sango’s, and sure enough, the pink and black clad girl was standing there when she arrived.

“Hey Kags!” she greeted her with a smile. “How was practice?”

“Exhausting, Sango! I thought swimming was hard, and come to find that track is even harder!” Kagome said with a tired giggle. “It was fun anyway… Although I could have gone without Koga’s constant flirting.”

Just as she had anticipated, Sango’s eyes got wide. To add to her already funny expression, her jaw even dropped.

“What do you mean Koga was flirting with you?! Tell me Kagome, tell me!”

And with that, Kagome retold the happenings of that afternoons shot put practice. How Koga had so suavely (or so he had thought) introduced himself, and then had proceeded to ask numerous questions of her, most of which she grudgingly answered, if not to get him to leave her alone. Then Sango’s jaw nearly hit the floor when she had told her of how Koga had so exuberantly asked her out Friday night.

“What did you say?” Sango asked, her eyes nearly popping out with the news.

“No of course!” Kagome responded. “I don’t think I could ever date a baka like Koga. He’s such a straight forward person, and he’s a little to domineering for me…”

Sango gave her a knowing look. “And your current love interest isn’t?” she asked in a whisper. Kagome’s eyes flew wide open and she smacked her hand over her best friend’s mouth.

“Sango! Don’t say something like that with Kikyo so close!” she angrily whispered to her friend. And with that, both pairs of eyes slowly scanned the locker room, to find Kikyo across the room, calmly changing into her clean clothes. Kagome then gave Sango a stern look and released the hold she had on her friend.

“Kagome…” Sango began quietly. “You know as well as I do that InuYasha is going out with Kikyo. Not to mention that they’re pretty close. They even have matching straps for their cell phones; a blue jewel on his and a pink jewel on hers. You know what that signifies, right?”

Kagome nodded solemnly. She knew what it meant alright. It was said that if a couple had matching Shikon no Tama straps on their cell phones, their relationship would be good all throughout their lives, and their fates would become intertwined forever. It had become a trend in the community a year or so ago, and so far, every couple who had actually gone to the shrine they sold them at and bought one had actually ended up staying together, and some had even gotten married. It was hard proof that Kagome would never get her chance.

“I know Sango. Believe me I know. But I just can’t seem to stop myself from liking him. I don’t even think I want to stop liking him…” Kagome finished sadly.

“Kagome, in order for you to move on, you must get a hold of yourself. You have to accept the fact that you can never have InuYasha.” Sango reasoned. She didn’t want to see her best friend hurt anymore. How many times had Kagome come to her, in tears, because of these feelings she held for InuYasha? She couldn’t bear it anymore.

“Your right Sango. I’m sure I’ll get over him sooner or later. But its gonna take time. It won’t just happen over night, you know.” Kagome gave her a sad smile as she said these words, and Sango’s heart clenched in pain for the love-stricken girl.

“I’m sure you will, Kagome. Now let’s get changed. Wanna go out for ice cream?”

“Sure Sango!” Kagome said with a grin. She then proceeded to turn to her locker and begin to dress. But as she slipped on her shirt, her thoughts once again drifted to the man that had so stolen her heart, and without even realizing it, no less. It broke her heart.

“Are you ready, Kagome?” she heard Sango ask from behind her.

She plastered on a smile, one that wasn’t completely genuine.

“Sure am! Lets go.”

And with that, both girls walked out of the locker room arm in arm.
