The day Kagome had tried to tell InuYasha that her mother had asked her to come back for Christmas had been frustrating. She had tried to explain the western tradition, but he had just looked at her with crossed arms and a cocked eyebrow like she was bakana. So now here she was, putting the star carefully on top of the tree in the living room. She was still short even on tiptoe, so stood on a step stool precariously balanced on the tips of her toes. Almost there…

 

Kagome was startled by the slam of the front door, which made her flinch. She had no time to see who was there before there was a screech from Buyo. A sinking feeling started in her stomach.

 

“I didn't mean to step on your tail you stupid cat!” InuYasha snarled. “I'll get you for scratching me!”

 

“Inu-.” Kagome began, but didn't manage to get anything else out.

 

Buyo charged into the room as fast as his fat body could fly, followed by that incorrigible hanyou. Eyes wide Kagome was not able to get off the step stool in time before Buyo smacked into it. Arms flailing, the step stool wobbling underneath her, she watched as the cat careened off the stool into the tree. InuYasha jumped after the terrified cat, the tree came down and Kagome fell on top of all of them.

 

Souta, Mrs. Higurashi and Jii-chan came running at all the commotion.

 

“Tis the season,” Kagome groaned. “Ho, ho…”
