The Battle

It was fairly dark when Kagome and InuYasha returned. Miroku, Sango and Shippo had been arguing about who should go look for them when they appeared.

“Good, your back,” said Miroku.

“Is everything okay?” Sango said.

“We were getting worried,” said Shippo.

“Yes, everything is okay,” said Kagome, smiling and bending down to ruffle the little kitsunes hair, “just a case of nerves.”

Mollified, everyone began to prepare to go to sleep. Kagome and InuYasha tried to act as if nothing had happened between them, but it was hard. They had decided to keep their new found intimacy from the others, for now. It was not something they were ready to be open about yet at a time when everyone's thoughts and energies should be focused on tomorrow's confrontation. Narakus stronghold had finally been found, and it was hoped by all that this would be the final showdown.

Although Kagome was still nervous, much of the tension had been dispelled by the longed for moment of magic that had occurred when she and InuYasha had made love. She felt warm and languorous. Her bodies aches did not effect her with the remnants of the tremendous high of their love making still coursing through her body. As she snuggled down in her sleeping bag she couldn't resist calling out to him.

“InuYasha,” she whispered.

“What is it?” he whispered back.

“Come here a moment.”

He bent down to her and she gave him a quick kiss.

“I just wanted to say thank you.”

He blushed and looked over his shoulder at the sleeping forms of the others.

“Uhhh…”

“Don't worry silly, I think everyone is asleep.”

But Miroku, Sango and Shippo each cracked one eye open. They were not so easy to fool.
The next day dawned, too bright and beautiful for the somber mood of the group. They broke camp and made the last leg of their journey. Across the valley they came to Narakus barrier, glowing evil lavender blue. InuYasha drew Tessaiga, and it glowed red with power as he sliced it and it evaporated.

“Come on out Naraku,” said InuYasha, “and prepare to die!”

Out of the sky poured a huge swarm of demons, screaming and slathering, accompanied by the poisonous insects that kept Miroku from using the wind tunnel. InuYasha used the wind scar again and again to dispel them. Sango hurled hiraikotsu and Miroku wielded his staff, while Kagome stayed safely behind the half demon, arrow cocked and waiting her chance to launch it at Narakus heart.

Finally he made his appearance, huge and formidable. His many demon tentacles and legs held his body high over the group.

“Ah, InuYasha,” he said, “you've finally come. I've waited a long time to put an end to you and claim the shards your miko has.”

“Heh,” said InuYasha, “not likely.”

They were hard pressed. Naraku kept going for Kagome, who was looking for a clear shot at his heart. InuYasha wanted to use the backlash wave but had to constantly ward off his attacks on her. Suddenly the evil half demon was distracted.

“Naraku!”

Everyone looked up and saw Kikyo, poised on the other side of the hideous half demon, aiming an arrow at him.

This was InuYashas moment.

“Get ready Kagome,” he whispered, “Backlash wave!”

Kagome and Kikyo both shot their sacred arrows at Narakus heart as InuYashas backlash wave pulverized the swarming mass of Narakus demon appendages.

Narakus eyes went wide as a gaping hole appeared in his chest, then he evaporated. A glowing, lavender almost sphere floated down out of the debris. Kikyo stepped forward, and caught it in the palm of her hand.

“It's finally over for you, Naraku,” she said, “all that's left for me to do is complete the shikon jewel before I let go of this undesired undead existence.”

“InuYasha,” Kikyo called, “it's time to keep your promise. Together we will complete the jewel and take it with us to hell.”
InuYasha gasped. Miroku, Sango and Shippo looked startled while Kagome was close to tears.

“Kikyo…I,.” InuYasha stammered

“It's time for us, my love,” she said, raising her and to take his, “you said you would be with me”

InuYasha closed his eyes and bowed his head. What should I do, he thought, I did tell her I would be with her. My loyalty to Kikyo came first…Kagome always knew this.

So even though his heart ached for Kagome, InuYasha went over to Kikyo and took her outstretched hand.

Kagome broke down, and sobbing ran to Sango and Kirara.

“You are not getting my shards,” she cried, “Sango, can you and Kirara take me back to the well, I want to go home!”

InuYashas heart constricted with guilt as he watched them fly away. With a sigh he turned to his first love and they walked away.
