InuYasha's Doubts and Kagomes Heartbreak
They walked through the forest, the half demon and the miko. As he watched her stately figure, swaying as she walked before him, InuYasha's mind was full of questions and doubts.
“Why didn't you take the shards that Kagome has?” he asked.
“We can get those anytime,” she replied. “The few that remain scattered about the countryside will be harder to collect.”
His mind kept replaying the look on Kagomes face, her sob of pain, and how she fled back to her time. It still hurt him. But I know Kikyo loves me, he thought, she won't go to hell without me. But this thought was not totally reassuring. So he approached her and went to take her hand. Casually she rebuffed him, not even turning to look at him, and continued walking. He sighed, thrown again into the midst of his doubts. No matter, he would try again later.

“Will you be coming back?” asked Sango as Kagome dismounted.
“I don't know,” she said, wiping the tears from her eyes, “I really can't think straight right now. But I still have the shards, so I suppose my link with this time is not over.”
She slung her backpack over her shoulder and tried to smile.
“Thank you for bringing me here,” she said, “please give Miroku and Shippo my apologies for not saying goodbye, if and when you see them.”
Kagome jumped down the well, and the flash of blue light that signaled her travel through time surrounded her. So stupid, she thought, I was so stupid to believe one night with InuYasha would make him forget his promise to Kikyo.
Slowly Kagome climbed up the ladder in the well in her time, and then composed herself before seeing her family. She really did not want them to know how upset she had been and make them worry or ask questions. Better to put this behind her and try and resume her life in her own time, until she made up her mind on what to do about the jewel shards she still carried in a glass jar around her neck.
“Hello Mom, Sota, Grandpa,” she said in her best imitation cheery voice.
“Hi sweetheart!” said her Mom, “I was just getting dinner ready. I'll set you a plate.”
“That'll be great,” she said, “Just let me go drop my pack in my room and change my clothes.”

It was night in the forest in the feudal era. InuYasha and Kikyo sat at a campfire. He ate the fish he had caught and grilled, while Kikyo watched, her soul collectors swarming around her in lazy circles, occasionally dropping the glowing orbs of souls that were absorbed by her body. He had not made an advance on her since her rebuff earlier in the day, but had not given up his intention to try again. His meal finished, he got up and went over to her and knelt by her side.
“Kikyo…” he said, raising a hand to stroke her hair and looking for a warm response.
Kikyo turned her face away before he could try and kiss her and pushed away his hand.
“Go to sleep,” she said, “We have a long journey ahead of us tomorrow.”
Her rejection of him made InuYasha frustrated and a bit angry. Without another word he leapt up into an overhanging branch and tried to settle down to sleep. To make matters worse, he really missed Kagome. Memories of their night together kept coming unbidden to his mind, making him restless. Oh, Kikyos love is so cold, and yours was so warm, Kagome he thought as he finally drifted off to sleep.

Kagome went through the motions of having a pleasant dinner with her family, and then took a hot bath. It was harder to keep up her pretenses when she was alone, and soon found herself sobbing in the bath and desperately trying to cover up the sound. Her heart cried, InuYasha, InuYasha, I need you, I want you, I love you so much and I can't believe you're gone from me forever. As the memories flooded in of their night together she just wanted to sink into the bath and drown. But she was strong even I the face of overwhelming heartbreak, and had regained control of herself by the time she left the bathroom.
Back in her room she got into her nightgown and fell into bed. Pure mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion overcame her. Sleep came immediately.

On InuYashas second day with Kikyo, he really began to believe he had made a mistake. This woman, the resurrection of the miko he had loved, hardly spoke to him. As they traveled together, she did not look at him, just expected him to be there by her side and made no other acknowledgement of his existence. He was growing more and more frustrated and feeling lonely. Finally he decided to break the silence.
“Kikyo, do you still love me?” he asked.
“Of course I do, InuYasha,” she said but did not turn to look at him as he walked beside her.
“You have a strange way of showing it,” he muttered.
“Did you say something?”
“Nothing…”
He closed his eyes and bowed his head briefly. What a stupid fool I am! He thought. Forgive me Kagome, I've made a terrible mistake, but if I can, I'll correct it, soon.
