Chapter One
Blinking Back the Light

************************************************************ **************************

The sunlight poured through the pale shades of the bland hospital room. Illuminating the lone figure laying on the bed, her chest rising and falling as she took her first real breath in years. She tried to open her eyes, but her body didn’t seem to want to listen to her mind and her eyes stayed closed.

‘Okay, so the blinking thing didn’t work. Maybe I can try to talk.’ She opened her mouth, albeit with some difficulty, and tried to say hi, but all that came out was a strangled gasp. ‘Okay so the talking thing didn’t work either, let’s try the moving thing.’ She concentrated really hard on wiggling her nose and after about ten minutes, she got it.

She did a mental happy dance and kept up for about another ten minutes before she was bored once again. She figured that if her nose moved, then maybe her lips would as well, and once again, spent ten minutes making stupid faces, happy at the fact that she could. She moved on and by the end of three hours, was able to move her nose, lips, fingers, toes, and she could slightly twitch her whole right foot.

‘Okay, I’m making pretty good progress with the moving thing so now I can try opening my eyes!’ No effect. ‘Now I can try... opening my eyes!’ No effect. While she played this little game of trial and error, a nurse came in and opened the curtains, letting the sunshine in full force. And just as that last bit of curtain pulled away, Kagome got her eyes to open. ‘Yes!’ the sunlight streamed into her sensitive eyes, ‘No!’

She quickly shut her eyes again, the intense light too much for her to handle. She squinted her eyes open, just a crack, but still ended snapping them shut. She tried one more time and didn’t have to shut them again. But it didn’t last long before the sunlight became too much, again.

‘Dammit! Why does the sun have to have something against me the morning I wake up? You know what, I bet it’s a Monday, and morning too. Monday mornings have always hated me, I guess this is revenge for sleeping in late.’ Kagome squinted and looked around the room she was in. It had lots of white, something that Kagome did not appreciate due to the fact that it glowed really bright now that the sun was shining on it.

Besides white, it had a lot of machines that annoyingly beeped on a regular basis, irritating Kagome to almost no end. It wasn’t that fact that they were beeping, but there was one that would beep louder and faster and then die down and get softer. This seemed to happen every time she got excited or angry. There were some steel chairs and counters that contained all sorts of gadgets that both intrigued and disturbed her.

She strained her eyes to look at the door, which opened to reveal a nurse carrying a tray with a bottle containing some kind of brownish-greenish goop that made Kagome want to throw up. The nurse walked up to Kagome, looked at her, gasped, then ran back out, dropping the bottle of goop on Kagome’s legs. The icky stuff slowly oozed out of the bottle and onto the sheets creating a very uncomfortable and highly disgusting wet spot.

Kagome mentally groaned since her ability to do so out loud was currently disabled and peered down at the mess. Due to her current immobility, she couldn’t really see how bad it was, but it felt incredibly yucky and cold too. Just as she was about to try and move her head more, the same nurse who got her in this predicament came back into the room followed by a young doctor with short black hair tied into a neat ponytail at the nape of his neck.

The nurse had dark brown hair and sparkling chocolate eyes, that shone with sympathy and excitement. The doctor looked up from his clipboard and over at her, a skeptical look on his handsome features.

“Are you sure she was breathing on her own? She’s been in this coma for four years, I doubt that she would wake up out of the blue,” he asked doubtfully.

The nurse pouted,”I’m not an idiot I saw her chest rising and falling and her eyes are open too!” exclaimed the nurse as he crossed her arms over her chest. The doctor sighed. His nurse and fiancé could be really indignant at times.

“I never implied that you were, I was merely suggesting that the odds of her being awake are very slim, almost impossible. I looked at her records and the wound she received cut some of her spinal cord and some vital arteries and nerves, it would be a wonder for her to wake up, but she would mostly likely be paralyzed from the neck down,” said the doctor as he walked over to the counter, rummaging around for something.

‘Ha, shows what you know. Most of my toes and practically my whole right foot are mobile.’ thought Kagome as she smirked. Once the doctor found what he was looking for, he turned and walked over to Kagome and looked at her eyes, surprise in his own violet ones. He pulled a flashlight from somewhere in his lab coat of wonder and flashed it in her eyes.

Kagome instantly shut her eyes against the light, irritated that the sun and this doctor had something against her. He shut off the flashlight and pulled a little hammer from somewhere inside his coat along with a notepad, pen, and stethoscope. Kagome wondered just how much stuff he could fit in that coat of his. ‘It’s like a purse that you can wear. Maybe I should get one.’

“Raise your hand if you can feel this,” said the doctor as he lifted the sheets to reveal her legs and tapped her knee with the strange looking hammer. Kagome felt it, but since only her fingers worked, she couldn’t let the man know.

The doctor sighed,”I told you that she would probably be paralyzed, this only proved it. She hasn’t responded to any of the taps.” The nurse looked desperate,”Please try one more time, harder.”

Kagome rolled her eyes, obviously the doctors had no kind of observational skills or he would have noticed Kagome grimace or frown when he hit her hard. She wasn’t too fond of the nurse at the moment for suggesting he hit her harder. By the time they were done, she would have a bruise the size of a tennis ball on her knee, something she wasn’t looking forward to.

The doctor complied and hit her knee with extra force as it made contact with her already sensitized knee. The pain too much for her sensitive nerves, she opened her mouth and let out a small squeal. Both the people in the room looked at her with their eyes wide and mouths agape.

The doctor didn’t say anything but instead hit her knee again, and Kagome in turn squealed again. ‘Damn bastard. If I could move right now I kick him in the balls. But I can talk! Sort of because it was more of a squeak, but it’s progress!’ He quickly jotted something down on his handy dandy little notepad and stood up. Kagome watched in anger as he left in a hurry, while the nurse excitedly pulled a chair up beside her bed.

She brushed a stray strand of hair and tucked it behind her ear, smiling brightly. “I told him you would wake up, I just knew it! At first I thought that you would just die in the coma but in the second year, I began to have these feelings that told me you would wake up!” she whispered. Kagome couldn’t help the feeling of familiarity that she felt around this woman, though she was sure they had never met before.

“Oh, how rude of me, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Sango and I have been your personal nurse for the past four years. The doctor’s name that was just in here is Miroku and he has been here for the past three years, he replaced your old doctor, Dr. Taishou. He was murdered in the end of his first year as your doctor,” said Sango with a hint of sadness in her voice.

Kagome blinked at the names, they all sounded vaguely familiar, but she brushed it aside as some kind of coma thing. She was surprised that she had been in a coma, and for four years too! But it did explain why she couldn’t move that much.

Just at that moment, Miroku walked in the room, a bright smile plastered on his face. “Good news! The board said that she can be moved to a new room and is to start physical therapy immediately!” he chirped as he wrapped his arm around Sango’ waist, earning an embarrassed blush from Sango.

If Kagome could cry, she would, because trying to move a little bit was okay because she wasn’t being forced and she could move at her own pace. But physical therapy sounded painful, and rushed. Her eyes closed in a silent groan, this was not going to be fun.

~*~*~*~*~*~

It had been two months, and a lot of sweat and tears, but Kagome could finally walk and function like she had been able to before the accident. But she could still not fully talk. Sure she knew the words, but when she tried to turn the mental words into physical, audible ones, it either came out as silence or some strange sound.

In two days, she was finally going to be released from the hell that was the hospital she was staying in, and Kagome couldn’t be happier. She had agreed, though with much begging and a couple of chocolate bars, that her personal trainer, Kouga, would make weekly visits to her apartment that she didn’t remember ever having or buying. Along the way of her pot hole filled road to recovery, she figured out that she currently didn’t have any recollection of what had happened to her before she had woken up.

This little discovery had lead to the decision that she would visit a psychiatrist every two weeks, which didn’t make Kagome any happier, not in the least. Currently, she was in the gym, lifting weights as a part of her physical therapy program. She had been at it for about fifteen minutes and she had worked up a thin sheen of sweat.

Kouga strolled down the hallway to where he knew Kagome was. When he had been assigned to be a girl named Kagome’s trainer, he had thought it merely a coincidence that it was the same name of his Kagome, and brushed it off. But when they had told him that she was recovering from a coma, and when he had actually seen her, his heart leapt with joy.

There was no denying that the girl in the gym lifting weights, was indeed Kagome. The scent hadn’t changed in the bit, even tough the looks did. Her hair was now down to her thighs and her body had filled out, a lot, in all the right places. This was the same Kagome that he had grown to love.

He remembered the night she was injured and almost cried every time. And knowing that she didn’t remember him or any of the others, killed him inside. The current Sango and Miroku, though not the originals, felt the same way. The originals had died together at the ripe old age of one hundred and four, and had eight children. They made it their duty to make sure that all of their family members knew of Kagome and would try to find her if they could.

The two that were now alive were in fact their reincarnations and their great, great, great, great, great, great grandchildren as well. The two of them were the exact same as the old ones, save a couple differences. They remembered every aspect of their ancestor’s lives down to the most minuscule detail, which was a little disturbing, or at least it was to Kouga.

He walked in the gym door and told Kagome,”Okay, that’s enough for today hit the showers, you smell. Besides, we wouldn’t want out little angel here to pull a muscle lifting these big, heavy weights,” he said teasingly. Kagome put down the weights and glared at him, tossing her towel at him too. She got up and sauntered across the room, stopping when she was directly in front of her trainer. She stood on her tip toes and firmly pressed her lips against his, kissing him passionately. He gasped in surprise and Kagome took this as her opportunity to sweep her tongue inside, daring his to do battle with her own.

Kouga complied eagerly and they stood in that kiss for about three minutes before they broke away in need of oxygen. Kouga stared at her with shock. She had never gone this far before. Usually it was just a quick peck on the cheek and if her was lucky, the lips, out of happiness when she had accomplished something great. But this was totally different.

Before he could think straight again, he felt Kagome’s hand travel down from around his neck to his chest where she teased his nipples and bellybutton before slipping underneath the elastic of his work out shorts. He gasped when her small, gentle hand grasped his slightly hard length and gave it a squeeze.

He groaned and looked at her, seeing the mischief that made her blue eyes seem to burn. Then she slowly started to stroke him, giving little squeezes along the way. Kouga bucked into her hand, quietly groaning as he rested his head on her shoulder, inhaling her scent and nuzzling her hair.

She picked up the pace, making Kouga harder beyond belief. She felt his member twitch as he neared his climax and smiled wickedly. Kouga prepared for his release by clasping Kagome’s hips and pulling them to his own. He clenched his eyes shut as it approached, but as soon as it was right around the corner, Kagome removed her hand and stepped back.

Kouga stared at her with a pain and anger filled glare. His erection was throbbing with his unspent sexual desire, causing waves of pain to hit his lower regions. “Why?” he wheezed as he almost doubled over in pain. Kagome just smirked and walked away, leaving Kouga in the entrance to the gym.

‘That’s what he gets for insulting me.’
