Chapter four: Talent Competition

Inuyasha smiled down at Kikyou as she wrapped her arms around his waist. For a split second he thought back to Kagome and how she did the same.

`No' His mind told him, `Kagome is your friend, Kikyou is your girlfriend..'

Kikyou saw the emptiness in his eyes and stepped back suddenly angry.

"What's wrong with you lately? You don't return my phone calls! You don't listen to me when I talk anymore… You are always staring off into space… What happened?"

This gained the attention of the rest of the dance floor at the restaurant.

Inuyasha shrugged. "Sorry… I've just been thinking about college lately… My brother is pushing me really hard…. I'm sorry I have been ignoring you, Kikyou…"

Kikyou sighed and nodded, "Okay…You're forgiven…" Once again she held him as he did her swaying to the music.

Inuyasha and her were having serious problems lately. For some reason he couldn't focus on Kikyou anymore. He barely understood why he loved her. She wouldn't even let him kiss her because it was somehow inappropriate. He would never understand, because he was never meant to…

The day of the Talent Show

Kagome had finally gotten her chords to the song down and had her show perfect. Her new friends she had met in guitarist class were going to help her. One was Ayumi who was going to play the drums for her, then there was Yuri who would play electric guitar, then Eri who would sing backup at the end of the song. What was even better was they didn't even want some of the money! They thought it would be cool for them to be able to help her with this since it was for her best friend. They knew all about her and Inuyasha… she had told them so they would understand the song better. It was going to be perfect…

Inuyasha sighed as he watched Kikyou perform the same dance routine over and over again with a bunch of her girlfriends… He wasn't really paying attention since it wasn't his kind of music… he was never really into the r&b from the states. He was only going to the show because Kikyou was dragging him along. Inuyasha didn't even know that Kagome was performing. If he did, he would probably be more enthusiastic about it.

That night…

Sitting in the uncomfortable metal chairs in the auditorium of the high school, Inuyasha had his eyes closed, trying to fall asleep. Kikyou of course caught him and set him straight, muttering something about how he was an asshole or something, he couldn't really hear her. He shrugged it off and stared up at the stage wishing he was home in his bed.

Kagome and her band were going up second in line after a pop-singing duo. She wasn't that nervous, though her friends were. They didn't want to mess it up and ruin her song…

Almost ten minutes later after Yuri vomited twice they were on stage. Her band was behind the curtains as Kagome sat on a small wooden stool with her guitar.

"This is my song Solitude.."

With that said, she started singing along with her acoustic guitar…

As many times as I've wanted to tell you the truth

Then out of no where the curtains are forced open and the band shows itself as Ayumi began to drum and Yuri started to slam on the guitar, Eri in the background singing along. Kagome locked eyes with Inuyasha as she continued…

"Ooh, Can't you see
All along it was me

As to see right through me

And Ooh, Solitude,

Forever me and forever you
Ooh, Solitude,

After a guitar and drum solo the song slowly faded as the volume decreased.

Kagome bowed her head in thanks as people stood up and applauded. They all exited the stage and sighed together.

"Wow… thanks you guys." Kagome said hugging them all.

In the seats sat a man staring blankly at the stage. That was to him… At that moment everything made since. She was his secret admirer. She was the person giving him the notes and cards. Why hadn't he known? All the poems! All the signs!! Inuyasha stayed in his seat while his instinct pushed him towards backstage. He couldn't betray Kikyou. He loved her too. So he wouldn't.

Inuyasha decided instead he would start to pay more attention to her and level out the time he spent with both of the women in his life.

He didn't pay attention to Kikyou while she was on stage. No need to really. He knew what she was doing…

A couple of hours later, the principle stood on stage prepared to declare the winner of the talent show.

"Tonight we had an enormous amount of talent, but one person stood out and had clearly given her all into this performance…"

All the men in the competition shrugged saying to the others it didn't matter anyway…

"I would like to congratulate and give this five-hundred thousand yen check to Ms. Kagome Higurashi."

Kagome stood stunned, frozen in place. Her group had to actually pull her out on stage for the award.

"Wow…" She whispered as he handed her the check. The principle stepped to the side and allowed Kagome to say thanks.

"I want to thank my best friend for the inspiration… and he knows who he is…" She smiled and left the stage quickly, wanting to leave before Inuyasha caught up with her. She didn't want to talk about the lyrics at that moment. She really didn't want to talk about them ever…

Kagome's mom hugged her and rushed her out of the school, knowing why she was nervous.

Poor Inuyasha was left alone to deal with Kikyou… she was heartbroken…she even said shit about Kagome stealing the song from someone and that she had no talent like Kikyou herself did. Inuyasha left Kikyou to walk home that night because he couldn't stand to be around her. She knew Kagome was his best friend and she had to deal with it or it was over.

Inuyasha guessed it was over…maybe he should break up with her….yes. That was the only answer. He was too involved with Kagome to have time for Kikyou any longer.
