Chapter 14: Inside this walls…

It seems so long since I started this but I guess I'm just dramatizing a little. Guys, I'm in a crusade to make this fanfic come true just like I thought it long ago… Pray for me and the salvation of thy soul!

Disclaimer: I do not own the rights of Inuko Takahashi's works… I DO own my fanfic and I'm very happy about it! And soon I'll be doing one about Hellsing too!

Munching, munching and more munching could be heard in the spacious hall. The light form the fire filled it warmly and the smell of smoke and roasted meat transformed it into a camp indoors. The rich tapestries hanging from the wall were in awkward contrast with everyone sitting around the creeping flames on the floor.

Inuyasha sat with Kagome at his right side eating quietly her meal. He on the other side was a bit itchy and couldn't stop fiddling around. Inside this house he felt weird as if he shouldn't be there, or more like it as if the house shouldn't be there.

Shippo played with his food on Inuko's lap. It was marvelous how he had recovered, her slashes and bruises were almost gone now and she seemed not too appalled by the fact she had killed another youkai. There was no signs of fever nor of any sort of coldness that might imply Miroku's suspicions were true. He was very relieved and he felt invigorated by what had just transpired with his mate so it was a perfect state for this hanyou… It if weren't for the house that was giving him the creeps, of course.

Sango was too quiet, her hands slow and her fork cutting the meat a bit too roughly for his own peace of mind. Miroku seemed very angry too. They weren't looking at each other, let's not even talk of speaking. So, the only sounds were the yelps and gurgles form Shippo and some intermittent giggle from the little inu girl, both oblivious to the elders state of mind.

Kagome toyed with her hair, her cheeks still a bit rosy and her fingers lazy over her ebony tresses. He smiled, so far so good. He knew not what could happen next in this house or if the magic of it would affect the humans in any way… He feared that it was beginning too though, since Miroku hadn't being this quiet for a decade as he recalled it.

“Is the meat good, brat?”

“Hum, it is…” Shippo coughed on a large bite. “But the thing we got warm was even better” he meant the round bread like thing that covered in some weird smashed tomatoes had being covered then in some very thin layer of cheese. Kagome had called it a pizza, but he had preferred to go hunt some normal food for them, just in case this pizza thing wasn't enough.

“Keh. It's her time's food. Ramen is much better though.”

“But you never leave anything so I can try it!”

“Ramen's for old people not a kiddo like you.”

Shippo started brawling but Inuko scooped him from the floor and sat him again on her lap, petting his head until he was again eating quietly.

Inuyasha smirked, the girl had a way with his little step-son. Kagome smiled too, she loved seeing them all as a family. She placed her head in Inuyasha's shoulder, letting him feel her breath upon his neck. He flinched a bit but then massaged her hair in long strokes.

“Shall we go to bed then?”

“Hmm..Mmm” she said almost already asleep due to the coziness of the situation. Taking her in his arms he went away from them and into their room.

“Shippo go to sleep already, your mother's asleep so don't make a sound…” he whispered before closing the door at his back. Shippo ended his meal before Inuko had a chance to check how much of it was left.

“Inuko! I'll sleep with you!” he jumped and clinged to her neck.

“Okay...Is it okay for you Sango??”

“Yeah, I'll clean up and then join you.” She took Miroku's plate form him while it still had some food. Inuko's eyes went wide at this but she closed her mouth before saying anything and she got away before the storm got loose. Miroku wouldn't be this lucky.

He looked at her without moving, she was crunched to one side holding the plate in one hand and handling only God knew what with the other. He scooped behind her and embraced her, catching the plate when it fell form her hand.

“Let go, Miroku!”

“Shh, quiet down and listen to me.” His mouth was on her ear his breath caressing her neck, he would have only one chance before she cracked his head.
She pushed him away and he fell on his backside on the floor. she was sprawled in front of him and before she had a chance to stand he launched over her. Pinning her hands in his he stood hovering on top of her stilled form, his black bangs covering his eyes form her sight, his body weight impelling her form moving.

“God, let go!!”

“Please, just let me talk… this once.” Her silence gave him all that he needed to go on.

“I can't give you anything, Sango, I have a past that comes between me and my future. Someday I'll perish by my curse… and I don't want anyone to go with me into oblivion… I'm afraid that if I get close to anyone that person will suffer more for my condition than myself.”

Sango flinched, was he really thinking in her before his own person? No, she must have heard it all wrong but her heart refused to unclench waiting for him to go on.

“It's true I grope lots of girls, I can't deny it but I don't care about them all. You know that it's something I do simply because I can and it makes me feel alive. I'm so very afraid of dieing and leaving no one that will go to look after my grave…” his voice died in his lips, choked by the strength of his emotions.

“There are other things you can do to make you feel alive!” She couldn't help feeling angry and sad a t the same time.

“I'm sorry, I had no one that cared before…”

“I … I care now!” she sobbed. He felt her tears fall on his hands when he caressed her cheeks.

“Why? Why do you care? I can't give you happiness… A home and safetyness to bring up our children…I haven't given you anything but concerns and hentai actions.”

He raised and left with a sour edge to his voice. She walked his back leave and the door cover him from her sight. She could not believe he had bared his soul like that and she hadn't being able to say anything, anything at all to make him feel better. She felt so useless and cold without him, his arms holding her and making her warm.

She stood shaking and grasped her arms with strength, she felt shaken and afraid. He had ever spoken with such seriousness before to her, not about this at least. Her sobs dried after what seemed like eternity, she went to his door. Resting her head on the wooden plank she whispered his name, not wanting to wake him she disappeared into her own dormitory.

Her sadness and the dimness of the light prevented her from seeing that in Inuko's place a pillow had being arranged to fit in as a body would. Neither her nor Shippo were anywhere at sight.

***

Inuko and Shippo had crawled outside right after they had entered their bedroom. They had heard Sango and Miroku arguing but they hadn't paid attention and simply gone down the corridor into an area of the house that Inuyasha hadn't showed them. The worst part had being not waking Kuro that lay outside their room's door but they had being very careful.

The dark wooden walls were oiled, just like the floor they were walking on. Inuko's feet produced a muted sound not loud enough to be hear by youkai earns, let's not even talk about human ones. Shippo was itching to get to the high tower he had seen when they were coming into the castle and Inuko had agreed to go with him delighted.

There were various pots with flowers, she knew not what they were but they weren't different form one another, she wished for them to be orchids, lovely orchids of different shades and sizes. Shippo run ahead of her, he was faster and lighter and he skidded along the steps as if it was a straight ramp.

“Shippo, look here” There was a tiny door to the side of the tower. She wanted to get in there was he had already disappeared. Her fingers moved of their own accord and her hand opened the sliding door.

She couldn't see a thing, there was no moon on this room. Her eyes started burning and suddenly she could recognize forms and shapes. Opaque colors started surging and in seconds she could see where she knew she had seen only shadows and darkness. Not questioning this new development, Inuko started roaming around. There were some books piled over a small metallic looking table, their covers were burnt in the corners but the pages looked fine even if yellow shades made them darker.

She flipped through them, there was nothing that captured her interest in the old pile of dusty volumes. Nor on the boxes that held different accessories resting upon the wall and some lonely chairs. A weird sofa stretched itself towards the opposite walls, the couches were a deep bordo color and it's shape was funny. It seemed to be used half sitting half lying. She remembered seeing them in some place, somewhere with marble and columns she couldn't precise.

A mirror in the center was covered by a blanket. She took it away and marveled at the golden plaster that held the mirrored surface in place. She could see herself as if it were daylight, it was so cool! Her hair was languid falling on her back and her black kimono made her look paler than usual. The reflection seemed so natural, so warm…

She felt accompanied by her reflection, she rearranged her hair and so herself to see how it fit. Then she touched her obi, a slash had being opened in it's front by that man. She saddened and let go of those memories. It looked so good on the mirror, whocares it was broken? She wanted to have someone to talk to about this things, someone to hold her and make her feel cozy as her mom had done when she was little. the only memory she had of her, her beautiful sun tanned arms extending around her and her lovely red lips singing a song of joy that made the flowers come to life. Inuko extended her hand towards it and her mirrored hand met her own, interlocking it's fingers.

As if in a dream she saw how her other hand was squeezed too, and her face, not so long before reflected in the mirror came to life in a corporeal manner and came out to her. Her own features smiled at her and her reflection embraced her. At first she couldn't move but then, instead of running away, she returned the embrace. It felt so right, so warm and familiar to be embraced by herself. Her hair smelled of pears and grapes, and the silk of the kimono was smooth to the touch. A pair of white hands made her look up into a pair of beautiful green ayes, the eyes of a cat.

She flinched, she was not like this! But then she saw herself in those eyes, her eyes were indeed the eyes of a cat. the eyes of a cat that could look into the darkness and see light. Light to go on. The woman smiled, her lips looked rosy and inviting, her brightly white teeth barely visible.

A soft song came from those lips, a song she knew and her heart started to sing once more. a song of life a song of joy that everybody should know.

“I've being waiting for you” Her soft voice was like the falling of the water in a cascade, rich and deep and armonious.

“You are…”

“Here to make your dreams come true…”

“You…”

“I'll never let you be alone again…”

The soft lips of the apparition left a warm trail on her cheek before she went back into the mirror. Inuko touched her face, she was not looking as that mirror did. Her hand was on her cheek not on her sleeve and definitely not laughing as this woman was.

“Who are you!?” She backed away a few steps.

“It's funny, you didn't say what… I'm your reflection on this mirror.” She smiled, so confifently knowing that Inuko was the right one for her, the one she had waited since she was made, the one her master and creator had made her for.

“Liar, you are not me. Tell me your name.”

“I must be named by you, since I belong to you…”

“Shall I give you a name?”

“Yes, a name to be called… the one thing I always wish for.” She whispered. “A beautiful name, a name as lovely as the flowers and the dawn…”

“A name…”

Inuko touched the cold surface of the mirror once more, she wanted that warmness once more. It felt as if she was surrounded by sun in a field of blooming flowers.

“A name for warmness…”

“I have…”

“To give you…”

“A name.” Her lips formed it but her voice never left her mouth.

“What name?” Shippo's voice made Inuko jump out of her concentration. She spun around and found the little kit spying on her through the door.

“Nothing, I was talking alone…”

“I can't see in there, it's too dark. Come here, it frightens me…”

“Sure. I just… “ She turned and looked into the mirror once more. It was her normal reflection. `Maybe it was my imagination'
Shippo took her by the hand and they went on looking through the other rooms. The girl in the mirror smiled. `So close… give me my name Inuko.'

When Inuko got to bed again after their long long night, it was dawning. Thanks heavens no one had heard them roam around all night, or Inuyasha would be the helluva pissed off. She drifted while some bird sang his song near her window. Sango's breathing was normal, and so was Sippo's in her arms. He had fallen asleep so easily, she couldn't believe it, if it had being any faster she would have being afraid he had dropped unconscious. She felt she was postponing her emotions for later. She wanted to feel bad about Ira… but she could not. She felt only happiness in here, happiness in this place she was starting to feel she knew. The blanket smelt cozy and the wood under her felt warm. There were a few rays coming through a panel barely opened, it was so much like the home she had always desired for. As a child she would dream of a place like this, well, not exactly, it had beautiful jars with smelly flowers and Chinese pots and lots of plants and cushions everywhere. But it felt as if her dream had come true, it felt so right, so peaceful and safe. She drifted, her eyelids were closing but she tried to hold on, she wanted to go on listening to the bird and seeing how the sun filtered. It was a disastrous defeat, was her last thought as she rested her head upon the mattress.

A/N: Now… prepare for some fun, since this is gonna get moving fast now…The girl in the mirror is gonna get pissed of after some sort of arguing between Inuyasha and Inuko…and hell brakes lose once more!
