Chapter 16

Unhappy Reunion

It was decided by the five companions that they should put off actively searching for the rest of the jewel shards until Sango had the baby and brought it to see it's father. Inu-Yasha had grumbled, but only half-heartedly. After all they had been through together he knew it would be unfair to leave any one behind on their search.

“Besides, Inu-Yasha,” said Kagome, “even if I were to go with you we are no match for Naraku without Sango.”

“And I will not leave Sango's side now anyway, unless she made me go.” Said Miroku.

Sango looked at Miroku and smiled, giving his hand a soft squeeze.

“So you think I'm not strong enough to protect you from Naraku alone…” grumbled Inu-Yasha, but subsided at the burning look Kagome gave him.

Yeah, stupid remark, thought Inu-Yasha. Bur having said it, he reddened and looked away with a `hmph.' Miroku's eyes danced with suppressed laughter, and Sango just looked on with weary patience.

Kagome and Inu-Yasha had only been back two days when something tingled on the edge of Kagome's senses. She had been making her way to the edge of the forest to gather kindling, and stopped as the familiar feeling came over her: two shards, moving towards her fast. It had been nearly a year since she had last seen the wolf demon. With a pang of anxiety, she remembered what he had last said to her: `I have a border war to deal with, but after I am victorious, I will return for you Kagome. It is your destiny to be my mate.' Shortly after that she and Inu-Yasha had confessed their feelings for each other and become lovers. Kagome sighed, she had really forgotten all about this until now. With all that had happened recently, she was more than a little upset that she would have to deal with this now.

While she stood lost in these thoughts, a whirlwind came up to Kagome and a cloud of dust settled in front of her. She gasped as Kouga stood before her. He was leaner, more scarred, and his eyes were hard and glinted like blue glass. The keen look he gave as he smiled sent a shiver up her spine. This was not how she had remembered him at all.

“I'm back for you my love.” He said, and reached out a hand towards her.

Kagome flinched and moved away.

“What's happened to you Kouga?” she couldn't keep from blurting out.

He looked confused for a moment then smirked, his eyes becoming even flintier.

“The war was long and hard, but we won. I must seem battle scarred to you, but that is to be expected. We fought for almost a year, with many losses on both sides. But now it is time for my pack to regroup and replenish our numbers.”

Kagome narrowed her eyes, her mouth in a hard line.

“What do you mean, `replenish your numbers?'” She said suspiciously.

Kouga grinned, exposing his fangs, and she did not find his smile comforting in the least.

“Our cubs will be strong Kagome, they will bring needed strength and vigor to my pack.”

Just then a crash came from over to their left. Inu-Yasha burst through the trees, sending tree limbs and leaves flying.

“What are you doing here talking about having cubs with my women you wimpy wolf?” He growled menacingly.

“Since when is she your women dog turd?” barked Kouga clenching his fists, “I thought you only loved that clay doll, Kikyo.”

Kouga ducked as Inu-Yasha swiped at him with his claws.

“A lot has changed since you've been around,” said Kagome, looking over at Inu-Yasha to back her up.

“This time I'm gong to kill you,” growled Inu-Yasha, baring his fangs, and before Kagome could say anything else the hanyou and the wolf demon launched themselves at each other.

As the battle began, Kagome had to duck behind a tree to be safe from the flying debris. She had been stung by Kouga's mention of Kikyo. Why hadn't Inu-Yasha told Kouga outright that he loved her, not the undead priestess? Pain, fear and sadness welled up in her heart and choked her throat. Normally she would be breaking up the fight about now, but she was rendered helpless by her feelings.

Kouga and Inu-Yasha had not managed to land many blows on each other. Kouga kept dodging Inu-Yasha's claw strikes and trying to land blows on him with his fists. Grimly the hanyou realized that Kouga had become a better fighter than he remembered. Just then he heard a heart-wrenching sob from Kagome. He hesitated and glanced in her direction. Kouga saw an opening; his battle-hardened mind numbed to the sound of tears, and landed a blow to the side of Inu-Yasha's head with a loud crack. The hanyou flew back towards Kagome, and hit his head hard against a tree trunk. Kagome gasped as Inu-Yasha fell to the ground next to her, unconscious. Fearfully she looked up to see Kouga bearing down upon them, a berserker's gleam in his eyes. He was coming in for the kill.

Kagome through herself across Inu-Yasha's prone form before Kouga could get to him. Kouga pulled back from ramming his fist into her throat by mere millimeters.

“Out of my way Kagome! What do you think you're doing?” He yelled at her.

“Stop it Kouga!” she yelled back, “You don't know what you're doing! I love him, and I could never love you! Especially the way you are now!”

“What are you saying?” said Kouga, “I love you. He doesn't love you. You should love me!”

Kagome turned and buried her face in the still unconscious hanyou's collarbone with fresh sobs. She could here Kouga growling, and it was getting louder.

“Go away! I can't stand you!” She cried, glancing up at him through her tears.

Kouga flinched, a glimmer of confused pain shining in his hard, cold eyes, then he was gone. Underneath her, Inu-Yasha had not come to. Kagome was too overwrought to do much more than mutter his name as she cried.
