A/N: Ok, this is a short chapter. My muse has gone on hiatus again. She left me knowing what I want to write, but not how to write it. Here's what I could get done.
Chapter 17
The Love of a Kitsune and a Hanyou
By the time Kagome had regained her composure, Inu-Yasha had still not woke up. Filled with remorse about his condition, she made her stumbling way back to the village to get help to bring him back. As soon as she began choking out her story, her friends urged her to take them to him. They found him just as she had left him, lying on the ground under a tree. A pool of blood was forming under his head.
Kagome did her best to help Kaede bandage Inu-Yasha, but could not keep her hands from trembling and fumbling. Eventually they got him secured to a makeshift stretcher, and Miroku, Sango, Kaede and Kagome each took a corner to carry him back.
“It's all my fault,” said Kagome miserably, “if I had not been so upset that Inu-Yasha hadn't told Kouga that he loved me, I would not have distracted him.”
“Don't be so hard on yourself, Kagome,” said Miroku, “Inu-Yasha was doing the fighting, he should have paid more attention.”
“Besides, you know Inu-Yasha. He's never been one to freely express his feelings, especially with someone like Kouga around.” Said Sango.
“I agree with Sango,” said Kaede, “but we, and above all you, know that Inu-Yasha loves you.”
“Well, if it had been me I would have told Kouga that I loved you,” Shippo said solemnly, and looked up at Kagome from where he walked next to her.
This made everyone smile, and Miroku chuckled softly. Affronted by the monk's reaction, gave Miroku a peeved look.
“I would too!' He said.
“I believe you would have,” said Kagome, reaching out to ruffle his hair, “thank you.”
Shippo's declaration eased some of the pain in Kagome's heart. No one doubted Shippo's love for Kagome, and they all murmured that they believed him as well. This mollified the little kitsune, and he smile triumphantly. Kagome took and squeezed his hand a moment.
Inu-Yasha was more seriously injured then they initially thought. He remained unconscious for two days, during which time Kagome rarely left his side. While she tended him she had time to think about what had happened between them recently and come to terms with it. Miroku and Sango teased her and accused her of brooding. Truthfully, she was not brooding, but she chided herself for her actions when Inu-Yasha had fought Kouga.
“What happened?” murmured Inu-Yasha on the morning he awoke.
“You don't remember the fight with Kouga?” said Kagome, unable to keep the color form rising in her face, and then staring at her hands as soon as they made eye contact.
“Of course I remember the fight…Ow!” He exclaimed as her tried to sit up and his head gave a violent throb.
Grimacing, he put his hand to his bandaged head. Kagome fluttered over to him and put her arm around his shoulders to give him support.
“Be careful Inu-Yasha. You have a pretty bad head injury.”
“I can't believe I let that wimpy wolf beat me,” he grated, and turned to look into Kagome's pain filled eyes.
“Hey, I'll be okay,” he said and put his hand over hers where she gripped his shoulder.
It felt good to be held by her again, but Inu-Yasha was concerned by the look in her eyes.
“You almost died Inu-Yasha, and it was all my fault,” she said tearfully, and put her face down on his shoulder.
“Do you really think that wimpy wolf could kill me?” he scoffed, and then flinched at the pain in his head. I guess he really did get me pretty bad this time…he thought.
“Oh, Inu-Yasha, I've been acting so stupid,” she said with a sob, “I'm sorry.”
“It's okay Kagome, I know I've taken the situation badly.” He replied, “You know how hard it is for me to reign in my immature reactions to things sometimes.”
Gently he lifted her head up so that they gazed into each other's faces. He kissed away the tears on her cheeks, and then slowly kissed her lips. She did not pull away, but let herself melt into the kiss instead. Having been denied by her for what felt like forever, he felt himself grow hard. This state of arousal created an answering throbbing in his head that he cursed inwardly. They would not be making up that way any time soon.
