Chapter 21
Saving Sango
Naraku paced the floor, silent, but his wrath was palpable to Kanna as she stood before him. He had returned expecting to find that Kanna had retrieved the shards from the miko girl, Kagome. Or at least, that she had taken her prisoner so he could pry their whereabouts out of her. Instead here was Kanna, with that demon exterminator in his dungeon. No shards. No Kagome.
“I don't want to hear any excuses,” he said, “so don't even try explaining why you failed in your mission.”
Kanna wilted, her pale light noticeably dimming. She had messed up one time to many. It was time to punish this wayward sorceress, even though she was created from a part of him. The perversity of this did not go over his head, but no matter. It had to be done. She gasped as he ripped her clothes from her body, cringing and covering herself as best she could with her hands and arms. Naraku laughed at her reaction. He parted a fold in his robe, revealing a coiled whip at his waist. Smiling evilly he unwound it and swung it back for the first blow. A loud knock at the door interrupted him.
“What is this intrusion?” he yelled.
“Sorry to disturb you master,” came the tremulous reply, “but our sentries report that the monk, Miroku, is approaching the mansion.”
Naraku's eyes flashed in annoyance as he lowered the whip and made a sound of disgust.
“It's time I'm rid of this monk once and for all,” he muttered, “Tell the sentries to stand down, I'll take care of this.”
Miroku had hardly stopped to rest or eat on his journey to Naraku's stronghold. He was plagued with anxiety about Sango. Although he had always had every intention of facing Naraku again someday, this was certainly not how he had hoped to go about it. But he felt that he had no choice, as long as Naraku had Sango, Miroku would do everything in his power to get her back.
As Miroku neared the mansion, he stopped to consider the best way to approach. He had tried to form a plan of action on his way here, but still had not settled on the best way to affect a rescue. Because he was alone he knew that is best chance lay in not fighting Naraku directly. There was always the chance that Naraku may be away and he could rescue Sango without having to confront him. This was a best-case scenario. As for a worst-case, well there were lots of them.
A ferocious buzzing sound brought Miroku out of his thoughts. The shadow from the swarm was huge, swallowing the forest in darkness. The pad of many giant feet of some demon horde could be felt in the shaking of the ground. This was definitely a worst-case situation.
Nearby someone else noticed the activity in the forest. He was confident that he was not the cause of it, but because it lay between him and is destination he made no qualms about investigating.
The attack had been intense, so many demons and enough wasps to blot out the sun. Naraku had really meant it this time, thought Miroku as he lay on the ground, gasping for breath. The wasp venom in his system made his vision so hazy he almost did not believe his eyes when he saw who approached him.
“Lord Sesshomaru,” said Miroku as the tall demon came over and eyed him critically. “ I don't know what you are doing here, but I'm glad to see you.”
“Oh?” said Sesshomaru nonchalantly.
“Naraku has Sango, and it does not look like I'm going to be able to rescue her as I planned.”
The expression on Sesshomaru's face became grave and withdrawn. Miroku waited for Sesshomaru's response, the demon lord's thoughts as inscrutable as ever. Those cold eyes of his never give anything away, he thought, his vision going in and out of focus from the pain.
“I will retrieve her,” said Sesshomaru, “there is no need for you to go any further, even if you could.”
Miroku could not find anything to say accept `thank you' as he slowly passed out while watching Sesshomarus retreating figure.
A/N: So, for all those who could not wait for Sesshomaru to return, here he is. Stay tuned for Chapter 22, who knows what my muse will do with that one.
