Chapter 22

Sesshomaru My Savior?

Sango woke up in semi-darkness. She had been knocked out when the raptor had grabbed her. Gingerly she touched her head, finding a large bump. Then she sat up, her bruised body acing from the time spent on the cold, packed-earth floor. Light from a narrow window slit showed her that she was in a small, bare cell. A moment of panic hit her and she moved her hands over her stomach. Sighing I relief, she found that the little life inside her was just fine.

Okay, Sango thought, I must be in the dungeon of Naraku's mansion. I don't know if anyone knows where I am. With a shudder she replayed the attack in the forest in her mind and wondered if Kagome was even alive. It was a scary thought, and an unproductive one. Right now she had to think of a way out of her prison as if no one knew to come rescue her. When she tried to stand she found that it made her dizzy, so instead she inched her way over to the wall on her but. With the wall at her back she drew up her knees and rested her elbows on them. She rested her head in her hands and concentrated on gathering her strength.

In what seemed like only a moment later, Sano was jolted by the sound of a crash and her cell door crumbled into large chunks before her eyes. Had she fallen asleep? What was going on? As the dust cleared, someone could be seen outside the opening. Sango braced herself, not knowing what to expect. So she was utterly amazed when Sesshomaru walked through the door!

“How?” was all she could stammer as he stepped over the debris.

“Can you move?” said Sesshomaru.

He watched as Sango used the wall to try and stand, and caught her as she wobbled. He looked pointedly at her middle, and she raised her hand to the rounded swelling of their unborn child and smiled reassuringly.

“The baby is fine,” said Sango, “it seems his demon blood makes him strong, even now.”

Sesshomaru did not reply, but he put his arm firmly around her and helped her out of the cell.

“What about Naraku?” she said as they entered the hallway.

“Even if he were not otherwise occupied I would not be concerned,” he said, “He is only a half demon.”

On the floor around them lay the guards. Sango could not tell if they were dead or only knocked out. Either way they did not wake up as they made their way up a flight of stairs and to another door that had been blown off its hinges. It was a relief to Sango to breath in the fragrant outdoor air after the dankness of the dungeon.

“But how did you know Naraku had me prisoner?” said Sango as they flew off.

“Your friend, the monk.” Said Sesshomaru.

“Where is he, why didn't he come with you?”

“I will bring you to him.” He replied cryptically.

In what seemed to be no time, they came to a clearing in the forest, and settled near Miroku's motionless body. Sango gasped and stumbled over to him. She touched him with a trembling hand, and turned very pale.

“He's dead.”

A/N: Yet another cliffhanger. It's just a good place to stop and let my muse catch her breath. I'm afraid if I push her too hard she'll snap.
