Chapter 23

Resurrection

Miroku looked like he was only sleeping. Sango had the urge to yell, “Wake up, wake up!” Instead she did not utter a word, knowing how close she was to losing control and becoming hysterical. Her hands shook violently, and she could not keep the hot tears from pouring down her cheeks.

“He was alive when I left him,” said Sesshoamru, “he must have been overcome by the venom.”

Sango could not look up at him. She slowly keeled over, burying her head in Mirokus chest, and her entire body began to tremor with her silent sobs. Sesshomaru watched her with exasperation. He fingered Tenseiga at his waist.

The hair on the right side of Sango's head was fluffed up by a `whoosh' of air. She looked, surprised, and saw Tenseiga at Mirokus throat. Just as she turned questioningly to Sesshomaru, she heard Miroku make a ragged gasp. As she watched, she held her breath and gripped his robe spasmodically, and Miroku slowly opened his eyes. He looked at her, dazed, and reached out his hand to touch her face.

“Am I in heaven?” he said in a rusty voice, “Am I dead?”

All Sango could do was grab his hand and kiss it, bathing it in fresh tears.

“No, not anymore,” Sesshomaru said dryly. “You may take Sango back now.”

Sango turned and whispered `thank you,' but there was only empty space where the demon lord had been.

“That's the first time I ever heard him use my name.” She said in a bemused voice.

“Are you all right?” Miroku asked.

“I'm bruised and I've got quite a bump on the head, but I'm otherwise okay.”

They put their arms around each other and just held each other for a while.

“Where are the others?” she asked as they broke their embrace, “Why are you here alone?”

Miroku filled her in on what had happened after she had been abducted, and then she told him about her rescue from Narakus dungeon.

“We better get further away from here before he notices I'm gone and he decides to come looking.” She said.

As Sango made to get up, Miroku took her hand, making her pause and look at him.

“There is something I've been meaning to ask you,” he said, “and after all that's happened recently, I've realized I can't hesitate any longer.”

She looked at him quizzically and gave him an encouraging smile.

“Will you marry me Sango?”

She blinked.

“You mean it, don't you?” she said after a moment.

“Yes, you know I'm through with come on lines. I really want to marry you.”

Sango sighed, bit her lip, and hung her head, looking down at her lap.

“I can't give you an answer right now.” She finally said. “I'm bearing another mans child, and until I know its future I don't want to make any commitments I may not be able to keep.”

Miroku gulped and nodded his head.

“But would you marry me, if you could?”

“Yes, I would.” She said and smiled.

They decided they were too tired and worn out to start to travel back. They leaned on each other as they moved deeper into the forest to find some water and a place to camp for the night. They found a comfortable spot by a spring, and Miroku put up wards that would alert them if any demons were lurking around. Then they settled down to rest, gingerly holding each other.

Later that night the wards went off.

A/N: So, who set off the wards? Is it Naraku, Sesshomaru, or someone else entirely? Only the muse knows. Tune in for the next installment (when I find the time to write, between my job, my 10 month old baby, and all my household chores `sigh'.)
