Chapter 26
The Birth
"Did Sango have the baby yet?" said Miroku the next morning as he ran up to the front of Kaedes house.
Shippou turned and shook his head. He turned back to the closed door as moaning and grunting emanated from within. Miroku listened and shifted about anxiously on his feet, uncertain as to what to do. Inu-Yasha stood behind himk, watching him with a disgusted look on his face.
"Well, why don't you knock on the door and let them know you're here?" Siad Inu-Yasha.
Just then they heard Sango make a loud, gutteral, prolonged groan. The three of them stood still and silent, holding their collective breaths and staring at the door. The sound stopped and they could her Sango panting, and Kaede and Kagome exclaiming excitedly at what had occurred. Shippou turned to aks Miroku a question when they heard the baby's lusty cries. The kitsune and the monk looked at each other, at the door, and then at Inu-Yasha.
"Feh!" said Inu-Yasha and went up to knock on the door.
He was nearly knocked over as Kagome opened it.
"It's a boy!" She said, a joyous look on her face.
"Can we come see?" Said Shippou timidly.
"Yes, sure." Said Kagome.
They trailed in slowly behind her and went over to where Sango lay. She was sweaty and pale, her long hair plastered to her face and neck, loking ecstically at the bundle in her arms. He was wrapped in a blanket and all that could be seen was his little face.
"Come closer and see my beautiful son." She said, waving them over.
Carefully she moved the blanket from around the baby's head. Two little doggy ears and a mop of silvery white hair popped out.
"He looks like his uncle Inu-Yasha." Said Kagome, grinning at the hanyou.
"Hmph." He said, gazing at the baby.
Kagome's grin faded as she regarded the mixed look of awe and sadness on his face. She thought about what emotions and thoughts might be going on inside him. Miroku was beaming as if the child were his own. He went up to Sango and kissed her tenderly on her cheek.
"What are you going to name him?" Said Shippou.
"His name is Koichi." She said as she tenderly wraood the baby up again.
He stirred and opened his eyes, showing them all thier dark gold color. Sango smiled down at him and he mewled, smacking his little lips.
"You should feed him, Sango." Said Kaede. "And all of you should leeave. Mother and child need to rest."
She shooed everyone out as Sango put Koichi to her breast. When they were outside, Inu-Yasha left, not saying a word, a brooding look on his face. Shippou looked perplexed as he watched him leave, and Miroku looked like he wanted to say something to the hanyou.
"Let him go," said Kagome, "this occasion has probably brought up a lot of memories for Inu-Yasha, and they are not all good."
"So what happens now," said Shipou, "do we tell Lord Sesshomaru about the baby?"
"No, it's too soon." Said Kagome, "Sango will tell him when she is ready."
"He does look like Inu-Yasha, though." Said Shippou and giggled.
"Yes, he does." Said Miroku, "But let's hope that's all he has in common with is uncle- Ow!"
Kagome had jabbed him in the ribs.
