Chapter 27
Life With Baby
Sango woke up with the sunrise, propping herself on her elbow and gazing lovingly at her baby sleeping beside her. It was quiet in the little house that Miroku had built them on the edge of the forest. Kagome and Inu-Yasha were still asleep in the other room. As she watched him breath while he slept, he slowly woke, opened his eyes and smiled at her. Warm, tender feelings of love filled her as she smiled back at him, reaching over to pick him up and feed him. The love that she shared with her baby boy since his birth three months before had had a wonderful healing affect on her. She had not felt this happy since the time before Naraku destroyed her village. With a sigh, she leaned up against her pillows, Koichi nursing vigorously at her breast.
A short time later, Kagome woke up. Inu-Yasha still slept deeply beside her, so she kissed him gently on the cheek and stole quietly out of the room. It was only a few paces to Sangos room, where she tapped softly on the door. Miroku had left the day before, so she knew she would not be intruding. When she got no response, she slid it open a crack. Sango had fallen asleep while nursing Koichi again. The baby lay in her lap, nursing on and off as he dozed. Kagome smiled, and Sango stirred.
"Good morning," Sango said, reaching up to massage her stiff neck.
The motion dislodged Koichi from the nipple, and he made a small whine of protest. This brought Kagome to Sangos side in a flash.
"Let me have him," she said, as Sango handed him over, "Come to Auntie Kagome baby boy."
Happily she put the baby to her shoulder and patted his back. In a few moments he let out a large burp. They looked at each other and laughed. When they looked up they saw Inu-Yasha leaning against the doorframe.
"Hey, I thought I left you sleeping." Said Kagome
"Hmph, you should know better." He replied.
Kagome turned the baby around, and he saw Inu-Yasha and began pumping his little legs and arms, Sango then reached over to take him back and change him. Koichi whined a little again, and turned his head towards Inu-Yasha as she lay him down.
"Aww, he likes his Uncle Inu-Yasha," said Kagome, and sighed.
"Hmp, anyone making any breakfast this morning?" He grumbled.
"We're happy to oblige, Inu-Yasha," said Sango as she finished diapering Koichi.
They stood up, and Sango walked over to him.
"Here, watch the baby for me." She said, and shoved the squirming bundle at him.
Inu-Yasha blinked in surprise, then frowned, but accepted the baby carefully into his arms. Kagome stopped in front of him on the way out the door, a wicked gleam in her eyes.
"Inu-Yasha, let's have one of our own!" She said.
"Feh!" he said, but softly so as not to frighten the baby, "you're not trying to tell me something, are you Kagome?"
"No, don't worry, I'm not pregnant." She said a wistful tone to her voice. "But someday Inu-Yasha, I would like to have a baby with you."
She ran her hand over Koichis silky head, and then followed after Sango.
Inu-Yasha gazed thoughtfully at the baby in his arms. Little Koichi looked back at him, smiling and cooing, and shoved a pudgy thumb in his mouth, gnawing at it.
"You better be careful doing that," said Inu-Yasha, "when you're claws come in you could hurt yourself."
Koichi burbled, and grabbed Inu-Yashas thumb. Inu-Yasha heaved a great sigh, and then hoisted the baby up to his shoulder.
"Let's go outside, nephew."
The air outside was cool and damp with dew. A large tree with low-lying branches grew by the side of the house. Inu-Yasha leapt into it, and settled down with the baby in his lap.
"You enjoy your life while you can" he said, "it gets tougher as you get older."
Koichi kicked his little legs.
"You are a lucky kid, you have a mother who loves you," he continued, brushing aside his hair as Koichi made a grab for it.
"Never take your Mother for granted," he said, softly this time.
Koichi turned his head to look up at Inu-Yasha and smile.
Inu-Yasha looked down at Koichi and sighed.
"You'll have to learn just what being a hanyou in this world is eventually." He said, as he looked back into the babies happy face, and unbidden to him his expression became somber and withdrawn.
Little Koichi did not seem to notice his Uncle Inu-Yashas melancholy mood, but just enjoyed being with someone he loved.
Neither of them had noticed that Kagome had approached. She wiped the tears that clouded her eyes. She had heard what he had been saying to Koichi, and her heart ached for Inu-Yasha. Ferverantly she hoped little Koichi would be spared the pain and rejection Inu-Yasha had been forced to endure.
"Breakfast!" Called Sango from the house.
As Inu-Yasha gently leapt down from the tree, Kagome darted back into the house. She decided not let him know she had heard anything. She knew how sensitve he was about his past, and felt that she should not intrude on his privacy. There would always be some things her love for him could not heal.
A/N: I hope this flowed. I am missing the end to this chapter, which I wrote 3 years ago. I tried to recreate it from the tone of the chapter, I hope it works
