Chapter 28

Mommies, Babies....and Daddies

Kagome, Inu-Yasha, Miroku, Shippou andSango with aby Koichi sat in the front of the house enjoying a clear, cool autumn evening after dinner. Rubing her arms from a sudden chill, Kagome moved closer to Inu-Yasha, who pulled her against his side and put his arm around her. Miroku was trying to play with the baby, who sat in his mothers lap, but Koichi had other ideas.

"Ouch!" Said Shippou, as Koichi grabbed at his tail.

The kitsune pulled his tail out of the babies reach and Koichi laughed, lunging for it again and nearly dislodging hinslef from his mothers grasp. At eight months old, the little hanyou was already showing how strong he was. His pudgy hands had sprouted little claws which Sangohad filed down (to Inu-Yashas consernation) for everyones safety.

"You better watch your tail around him," said Miroku with a laugh.

"Hmph," said Shippou, crossing his arms in an unconsciuos imitaion of Inu-Yasha."Are all babies like this or just inu hanyous?"

Inu-Yasha reached over to cuff the kitsune, and he yelped, leapt up and ran away.

"You know, I was just thinking about how nice things hae been since the baby was born and we stopped shard hunting." Said Kagome. "I wish it would never end."

"Hmp," said Inu-Yasha, "this break can't last forever."

"Well, we must stay here at least long enough to know what Sessshomaru will do about his son."

Miroku and Sango murmured in agreement.

"You realize that Sango and I may not be able to continue the quest with you," said Miroku "if we leave there will be no one to take care of Koichi."

"Even if I had someone to take care of Koichi, I coudn't bear to leave him." Said Sango, hugging the wiggling baby to her.

Koichi squealed and reached up to pull her hair.

Suddenly Inu-Yashas ears pricked up, and he narrowed his eyes.

"Someone is coming,"he said, jumping up and sniffing the air."I recognize the reek, it's Sesshomarus sniveling minion."

"Let him come Inu-Yasha," said Sango, "we have been expecting to hear from Sesshomaru for sometime."

Inu-Yasha came back and planted himself on one side of Samgo while Miroku and Kagome joined on the other. Soon they could hear the huff and puff of Jakken as he approached from the forest. The small, squat, ugly demon came stumping up to them, leaning on his staff.

"Ah," he said as he surveyed the group assembled before him, "Lor Sesshomaru has sent me to see the child."

Inu-Yashas hackles rose instinctvely as Jakken came closer, and Kagome reached a hand out towards him in an effort to calm him. Koichi noticed Inu-Yashas reaction, and turned and whined at Jakken. Jaken bent over and peered into Koichis face, and the baby imitated Inu-Yasha, growling at him.

"Yes, there is a family resemblance." Said Jakke, glancing up at Inu-Yasha as he spoke.

Inu-Yasha glared at him, another growl cut off by Kagomes nudge.

"You are to present little,ah," said Jakken uncertainly.

"Koichi," said Sango.

"Yes, Koichi, to Lord Sesshomarus palace as soon as possible."

"Must I come alone?" Sango said.

"You may bring one companion of your choosing. Don't keep my Lord Sesshomaru waiting."

With that, Jakken straightened up, spun around and left.

"Only one of us?" said Kagome plaintively.

Sango looked around at her friends faces. Kagome looked disappointed, Inu-Yasha skeptical, and Miroku hopeful. It was unfair of Sesshomaru to make her choose, but she hoped her friends would not be unduly surprised.

"I know it's unfair, and I wish we could all go together, but I don't want to antagonize Sesshomaru by not abiding by his orders. This is too important to Koichi's future."

She looked up into Mirokus face and smiled.

"I have to choose you, my foremrly wayward monk, to accompany me. You have proved that you really love me these past months, and I coudn't bear not having you by my side."

Kagome gave a resigned sigh.

"I understand Sango," she said, "I know that if I had to choose only one person to go with me on an important journey, it would be this old, grumpy half demon."

She gave Inu-Yasha a playful shove and he gave her a testy look, which made them all laugh. He smirked, and then grabbed her around the waist, making her utter a startled 'eep.'

"Do you think I would even let anyone else go with you?" he growled playfully in her ear.

Some of the tension and solemnity of the moment was dispelled, but they all still felt some foreboding in thier hearts. It had been one thing when they were waiting for this time to arrive, and another now that it was here.

A/N: We are coming to the end of the story. I believe there will be about 2-3 more chapters.
