Chapter 10: The Aftershock
I had told Inuyasha he could meet his son, but I wasn’t telling Taro who he was. That would be for me to decide later. I had to find out how this would affect Taro before I made a decision about telling him who Inuyasha was.
We walked together, side by side, with slow steps back towards Sango’s apartment. When we reached the building I felt like my stomach was full of a deadly acid. My breathing was labored, and t felt like any moment I could lose my breath and pass out.
Inuyasha looked calm on the outside, but I could se faint signs that he was indeed terrified of a five year old kid. His hands were slightly shaking, his breathing was heavier than normal, and I noticed his steps were dragging and heavy as if it took all of his energy to move one step. Also, his bangs were covering his eyes. He always did that if he was nervous or losing his temper.
When we finally reached her door I moved ahead and he stepped behind me. I knew he was showing that he would allow me to do the introduction. I could hear my own heartbeat in my ears, as if I’d suddenly gone deaf and all I could hear was the blood coursing through my veins.
I turned the knob and walked inside. Taro wasn’t in sight, but Sango and Miroku were sitting on the couch. Sango was curled up by Miroku with her head hidden in his left shoulder. I could tell she was worried about the way we left.
I cleared my throat to get their attention. Sango head snapped up so fast I thought it would bounce off her neck. She gave me a weak smile and I gave one in return. It wasn’t as sincere because I felt like I had just been hit by a meat truck.
I didn’t want to get into long explanations right now. I silently nodded my head towards the spare bedroom where I thought Taro would be. She nodded to me in the affirmative and I walked towards the white door that held my sanity in its very confines.
I knocked twice with Inuyasha standing behind me and opened the door without waiting for a response. Taro was in the far corner of the room huddled up with his backpack beside him and his toy trucks in front of him on the floor.
He looked up at the sound of the door creaking and I could see the unshed tears in his eyes.
“Taro, sweetie, I’m sorry about what you saw. Me and my friend were just having a disagreement. I didn’t mean to run out without telling you and I promise I wont do that again okay? Please don’t cry.” I said starting to cry myself. Without warning Taro ran up and threw his arms around my waist and hugged me tight.
“Mommy, you scared me. I didn’t know if you were coming back.”
“Hey kiddo, what did I tell you before? I told you I couldn’t lose you if I tried. I love you too much.”
“I love you too mommy.”
“Taro I want you to meet someone. This is an old friend of mine who really wanted to meet you. His name is Inuyasha.”
“Hi Mr. Inuyasha.” I saw Inuyasha step forward and get on one knee like he did before. He was studying every detail of Taro’s face and I saw some tears slip down his cheeks.
“Are you okay Mr. Inuyasha?”
“Yeah,” he said wiping his tears away. “I’m fine kiddo.” Despite how I felt about the situation I saw how sincere his reaction was. I had only seen Inuyasha cry once. I realized, he may not have been there but he loved his son.
“Taro, why don’t we go home and you can show Inuyasha your games? I’m sure he would love to play some with you. Would you like to come over Inuyasha?” I didn’t want to take Taro away yet. I thought taking them to my apartment would allow them more personal time. Inuyasha looked up at me and smiled. I could tell he was grateful I was doing this. I gave him a small one in return.
“Yeah Mommy!”
“You know what, I would love to. When do you want to leave?”
“Well, let me pack his things and you can take him in your car if you want and just follow me there. Is that okay?”
“Yeah.”
“Taro, go say good-bye to aunt Sango, and uncle Miroku.”
“Okay mommy.” Once Taro left the room I started folding his clothes and putting them in his backpack. Inuyasha stood there watching me with his hands in his pockets.
“Thank you Kagome.”
“Yeah, well, I’m not doing this for you I’m doing it for him. So don’t think I actually give a damn about you. That would be a grave mistake on your part. You’d end up seriously disappointed.” I grit out. He was being nice and all I could do was throw mean words at him. I could have left it alone, but sometimes walking away isn’t enough. I wanted to let him know he wasn’t welcome and give him a vague idea of how much he hurt me. I was merely trying to return the favor.
When I finished packing his things I said goodbye to Sango telling her I would call her the next day and give her the details. She nodded and hugged me. Soon, we left and Inuyasha drove Taro in his car following behind me.
When we arrived at the apartment Inuyasha carried Taro up the stairs. I smiled seeing him laughing on top of his shoulders, especially since I knew this was his father. I unlocked the door and showed Inuyasha to Taro’s room.
I went in the kitchen to make dinner and I could hear the laughter coming from Taro’s room. Pieces of sentences like “Wow that’s amazing.” or “You won again!” from Inuyasha. I could tell Taro liked him. I heard him get excited over showing Inuyasha his video games and toy cars.
I laughed to myself once in a while as I cooked dinner. I decided to make something both of them would like. I made Ramen with vegetables, shrimp, and mushrooms. That’s another thing Taro got from his father, his love for Ramen noodles. After about two hours I set the table and walked in Taro’s room. They were playing some video game sitting Indian style next to each other.
“Hey guys, dinner’s ready.”
“Okay. Hey kiddo let’s go eat.” They both ran to the table. Inuyasha sat on the end, I was seated at the opposite end of Inuyasha and Taro was seated to our left. When Inuyasha saw what I made for dinner his eyes bulged and he looked right at me. He gave me a knowing look.
“I cant believe you remembered how much I love this stuff.”
“Well, unlike you, I don’t forget about people who meant a lot to me at one time.”
“Kagome..”
“I don’t want to talk about anything. Just eat.” I kept my eyes in the table as I ate. I wouldn’t dare look up at him but I felt his eyes on me the whole time. It felt like someone was tracing the upper part of my body with a flashlight to get a better look.
“Taro if your finished I want you to brush your teeth so I can tuck you in. You have school tomorrow remember?”
“Yes mommy.”
“Kagome? Could I put him to bed tonight?” I knew he was trying, but I couldn’t help but be angry at him for what he did to me. But, I wont take that out on Taro.
“Sure, but he has a limit to one story and then lights out.”
“Okay.” He walked back to Taro’s room and I watched silently from the doorway as he tucked him in and kissed his forehead. I felt a trail of tears fall down my face at the sight. This is what I had wanted, to be a family and to be happy. But he was happy with someone else. Life just didn’t seem fair. He sat at the edge of the bed and read the story. I saw Taro slowly close his eyes before nodding off.
I stayed still, watching everything from the tiny crack in the door. Inuyasha pushed his bangs out of his eyes before kissing him again. When he started coming toward the door I tried to back up in time, but he hit me when he opened the door.
“Kagome?” Then he noticed the thin trail of tears streaking down my face.
“What’s wrong?” I turned my back to him and began to furiously wipe off my tears as I felt the burn of raw skin from rubbing too hard.
“Nothing I’m fine.”
“You’ve done a great job raising him Kagome, he‘s beautiful. He‘s a great kid.” That time I did smile sincerely. A half smile, but it was there.
“Yeah he is. Too bad you weren’t there.” I said before walking off to my bedroom, leaving him alone in the hallway.
