"So, you're telling me that that Naraku guy put some spells on me to make me
do whatever he wanted me to do?" Kohaku asked as he stretched his body to the
left, avoiding the small stone thrown at him by the little girl, making her
giggle.
"Yep. I don't know what kinda spells they are, though." Ayla said as she
threw another small pebble at Kohaku's head. He tilted his head to the side
in a gesture of deep thought causing the stone to sail over his shoulder,
missing him completely.
"I wonder why he took my memories."
"Well," Ayla threw another pebble at Kohaku, "I'm not sure, but you didn't
seem to be happy when you remembered the first time." Kohaku began to pace,
the stone sailing past him without so much as touching him. Ayla giggled
again.
"And those peopleback there are your family?"
"Yeah. They'll be coming for us soon." Ayla threw another rock at Kohaku,
missing him again as he bent down to pick up a a piece of wood to throw in the
camp fire. "One of them is your sister, Sango. She's really nice." Ayla threw
two pebbles in a row, hoping to catch Kohaku off guard, but he quickly
maneuvered out of the way. Ayla started to laugh.
"You're really good at avoiding my pebbles! How do you do that?"
"You're throwing pebbles at me? I hadn't noticed." Kohaku gave you a look of
surprise.
Ayla threw another stone at him, and grinned at him as he once again dodged it
without seeming to try. "Liar."
"You now, it's not nice to throw things at people, Ayla." Kagome's voice
floated into the small camp. It was soon followed by Kagome herself, as she
walked out of the woods and into the camp.
"Momma!" Ayla stood up and ran into her mother's outstretched arms. They
hugged each other fiercely as the rest of Kagome's party entered the camp.
"Are you okay, Momma? I was so worried about you."
Kagome laughed and pulled back, looking over her daughter. "That's my line.
I'm okay. Did he hurt you, baby?"
Ayla held her palm up to show the cut in the center. "Not really. He did cut
me to show that he could, but other than that, no."
Kagome took her palm and kissed the cut. "I'm sorry I wasn't there for you
baby. It was my fault."
Ayla hugged her mother again. "It wasn't your fault, Momma. Besides, nothing
happened. I was bored most of the time." Ayla pulled back and grinned at
Kagome. "I'm glad I'm back with you."
"So am I."
Ayla turned toward Inuyasha. "Nice hair."
"Look who's talking. You have quite the mop yourself." Inuyasha walked over
and ruffled her hair. "And you don't even have your pup ears..."
"Neither do you! You look pretty human to me, hotshot." Ayla stuck out her
tongue.
"You little runt. I bet you enjoyed your time in that castle, too." Inuyasha
got down eye level and grinned at her. "You are one handful of trouble, you
know that?"
Ayla grinned back and threw herself at him, taking him by surprise. Then
Inuyasha smiled and returned the hug. "I missed you too, you little brat."
Kagome smiled. Ayla was so attached to Inuyasha and the feeling was obviously
mutual. She turn and looked at Sesshoumaru, trying to determine his reaction,
but as usual the demon lord was expressionless as he watched his daughter and
brother interact.
Kagome then looked over at Kohaku. He'd been silent since they entered the
camp, staying far back away from the group. She walked over to him and
smiled. "Kohaku. I'm Kagome. Thank you for helping Ayla."
"Oh!" Kohaku flushed. "It's okay. She's the one who got us out of there."
"Still, thank you." Kagome leaned over and hugged him. She turned back to the
bantering half demons turned human. "Ayla, why don't you tell us what happened
these last few days."
"Ayla grinned. "Okay." She sat down and told the story with great enthusiasm.
She gave every detail, even about the things Naraku said about them. Ayla
stopped and asked questions about the bad things Naraku said, and received
straight and solemn answers from her mother and friends.
Ayla didn't mention the things said about Sesshoumaru, though. She glanced at
him a few times, but quickly averted her eyes, not wanting to show any
interest in him. Sesshoumaru could tell she was afraid of him, and he
silently cursed Naraku for whatever it was that he had said to the girl.
Kagome noticed as well. "Ayla, I should have told you when-"
"Momma, I'm tired." Ayla gave a big yawn. "Can you tell me tomorrow?" Ayla
glanced over at Sesshoumaru nervously.
It hurt Kagome's heart to see her daughter afraid. Ayla had never been afraid
of anything. "Okay, baby."
Ayla grinned. "Can I sleep with you, Momma?"
Kagome smiled. "Alright." Kagome grabbed her bedroll and spread it out.
Then she took a blanket and spread it over the bedroll. Ayla said goodnight
to everyone and jumped over to Kagome. She crawled under the blanket with
Kagome and within moments, both were asleep.
Sango, Miroku, Shippou and Kohaku all made spots for themselves on the ground
and quickly followed suit. Inuyasha leaned against the tree, with every
intention of staying awake, but the last four days caught up with him and he
too was asleep within minutes. This left Sesshoumaru alone with his thoughts.
Sesshoumaru took the opportunity to watch his daughter and the mother of his
child sleeping. Kagome had been so stressed these last few days that she had
rarely slept. Inuyasha had acted like a barrier, preventing him from having a
private word with her. Now, both mother and child were resting peacefully
together. It warmed his heart. This was his family. His daughter and, he
swore it would be so, his future mate.
He took the opportunity to look over his daughter. In her human form, she
looked a lot like Kagome, and it was obvious she would grow up to be a great
beauty. Prospective mates would come from all over to claim her. Not just
for her looks, but for the status she would hold from being his daughter, the
power she possessed, and her personality. It would not matter that she was a
half demon. This revelation surprised Sesshoumaru. But the more he thought
about it, the more he realized it was true.
Sesshoumaru watched his daughter sleep for a while, but was taken aback when
Ayla opened her eyes and looked right at him. After a moment, Ayla slipped
out from under Kagome's arm, and made her way over to him. She sat down next
to Sesshoumaru and stared into the fire.
"Can I call you Sessy?"
Sesshoumaru stared at her for a moment. His immediate reaction was to to
reprimand her for her lack of respect. He also wanted her to call him father.
But he knew she would withdraw from him if he said either. "Why?"
"I can't pronounce your name."
"Of course. Call me whatever you wish."
Ayla stared into the fire. After a while, Sesshoumaru decided to break the
silence. "Ayla, do you know I'm your father?"
Ayla nodded. She turned and looked him straight in the eye. "Why did you want
Momma to have me?"
"Because I wanted her for my own."
"But you hate humans."
"No. I did, but not any more. Your mother is a special woman, and I wanted
her to be the mother of my children. She loves my ward, Rin, and I wanted
that for my own children."
"But you hate half demons."
"At one point, I did. But you and your mother changed that for me. Ayla, I
would like you to give me a chance to be your father. I have done some
unforgivable things to your mother, but I would like the opportunity to make
things right. But only if you wish it."
Sesshoumaru couldn't believe how much her answer mattered to him, but he found
himself holding his breath, waiting for her answer. She watched him for a
moment, before she nodded and smiled. Sesshoumaru let out his breath and
surprisingly, he returned her smile.
"Go back to bed before your mother wakes. We will talk more tomorrow."
"Okay, Sessy." She grinned at him and returned to her mother's side.
"Beneath closed eyes and shallow breathing, Inuyasha was awake and heard the
entire conversation. Like hell he was going to just give up and let
Sesshoumaru have Kagome. Kagome was his, and he intended to keep her.
